I've reached the halfway point of my recaps of Ultimate Adventures Week! Today's show - January 19, 2000 - features another very memorable contestant, but she's one that most Wheel fans probably don't know about.

Pat’s guesses are NIBLETS and NIBLING before Vanna reveals it’s, of course, SIBLING.
Jayne Haynes is from Del Mar, California. She’s a writer who is looking to get a children’s book published and recently bought a horse. She’s also married with two children.
Angelo Chapotin is from Cicero, New York. Married with four children, he works as a human resources manager and has been practicing martial arts for 30 years. He was recently inducted into the United Martial Artist’ Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement.
Kathleen Sutton is from Moore, Oklahoma. She’s a third-grade teacher at Houchin Elementary School in Moore, and says her students “should be cheering for me right now.” She’s also been married to her husband David for 34 years and together they have two children.

Jayne’s first spin could have gone better, as she lands on BANKRUPT.

Angelo fares better, netting two R’s for $500, and his next spin gets him $400 on a single S. Two T’s on $800 also increases his haul. Angelo pauses to buy four E’s, but his next spin proves futile, losing $2,750 to BANKRUPT.

Kathleen gets $700 on a single M, and then two P’s worth $500 apiece, then quickly buys two A’s.

It’s time for Kathleen to solve, and she nails PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, which really is the perfect puzzle for a teacher to solve, when you think about it. Kathleen yells “Whoo!” at her victory, as she’s on the board with $1,450.
Jayne - $0
Angelo - $0
Kathleen - $1,450
Charlie’s eager to share the first prize being added to the wheel, which is a digital camera package from Epson. It includes the camera, a printer and scanner. Altogether, it’s worth $2,500.
Pat announces that round two is the Puzzler Round tonight, which means whoever solves the puzzle could make themselves $3,000 richer.

Angelo unfortunately begins the round the same way he ended the last one…with a BANKRUPT. Pat tells him not to make a habit of that.

Kathleen picks up right where she left off, getting $300 on a single S, then doubling $800 thanks to two T’s. It’s then vowel time, as Kathleen finds two E’s and an A. She gets $900 more with an L, followed by $800 with a K. She pauses to buy two I’s before spinning again, landing on $600 and finding two H’s. Two N’s mean that she can pick up the FREE SPIN, and she can pick up the DIGITAL CAMERA thanks to a solitary R. Kathleen then buys the final vowel in the puzzle with two O’s. A single M nets her $300, and a single G gets her $450. Another spin of $300 means she can double her money with two W’s (which she calls “dubya.”)

With only one letter left, Kathleen decides to solve MORNING TALK SHOW THE VIEW for $5,150 in cash plus her DIGITAL CAMERA. Pat recaps her total score from the first two rounds, but then realizes he forgot one thing; the Puzzler!

Kathleen gets HOT TOPICS even before Pat tells her she has three seconds to guess what it is, adding $3,000 to her very impressive total, meaning she’s added $10,650 to her score in just one round!
Jayne - $0
Angelo - $0
Kathleen - $12,100
Pat tells Charlie not to mess up the Jackpot Round plug, which the announcer promises he won’t, and says tonight’s Jackpot Round is sponsored by Lean Pockets. Additionally, a second prize has been added to the wheel. For Ultimate Adventures, it’s a trip to the Resort at Squaw Creek. The winner will spend a week participating in winter activities such as snowboarding and skiing. It’s worth $6,042.
Pat remarks that, for him, an extreme sport is playing darts without feathers.

After two consecutive victories, Kathleen is kicking off round three by getting $600 for a solitary S. She then hits $3,500, but in her first bit of bad luck, she can’t find a T, and can’t cash in.
_ _ _ S _ _ _ _ _ _

Jayne spins for the first time since round one, and lands on the JACKPOT. She confirms that she can’t solve the puzzle by guessing a dud R.
_ _ _ S _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _
Angelo also hits the JACKPOT, but he too can’t solve because there are no L’s in the puzzle.
_ _ _ S _ _ _ _ _ _

We’re back to Kathleen, who won’t be going on the SNOWBOARDING trip due to a lack of N’s. Kathleen actually rolls her eyes at the buzzer.
_ _ _ S _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _
Finally, Jayne is able to add $350 to her total after locating a solitary P. And, once again, she lands on the JACKPOT, but this time, she calls a C. Pat tells her if she can solve the puzzle right now, she’ll win the Jackpot.
C _ _ S _ P _ _ _ _

Without even missing a beat, Jayne calls out CHESAPEAKE BAY, causing Pat to yell, “Wow!” That impressive solve means Jayne has not only won the $9,450 Jackpot, but she's got a very impressive second-place total with $9,800.
Jayne - $9,800
Angelo - $0
Kathleen - $12,100
Angelo’s the only one who hasn’t been able to join in on the fun heading into round four. But with a $5,000 space on the wheel, it’s still anybody’s game.
Round #4

_ _ _ _ _ _
Fresh off her victory, Jayne begins round four by picking up $800 with a solitary T, followed by $600 on a single S. But a call of an R on $300 proves fruitless.
_ _ _ _
S T _ _ _ _
Angelo’s eager to get on the board, but he won’t get any help from that BANKRUPT.
_ _ _ _
S T _ _ _ _
Kathleen’s search for an L comes up empty, and she can’t cash in on $300. But Pat asks if she wants to use her FREE SPIN, which fell on the floor at some point. She’s happy she ended up using it, as her next spin hits $5,000 and, as luck would have it, there are two N’s. Kathleen buys an E, and Pat says it should help, since there are four of them in the puzzle. And with that, there are no more vowels.
E _ E N
S T E _ E N
Kathleen solves EVEN STEVEN, adding $9,750 more to her lead. Pat tells her he’s impressed that she solved the puzzle, since he had convinced himself Jayne Haynes would have been the one to solve Rhyme Time.
Jayne - $9,800
Angelo - $0
Kathleen - $21,850
Pat asks Angelo if he'd like to see another puzzle, and he does. Fortunately for him, they haven’t reached the end of the game, and there’s still time for another puzzle.

DING DING! DING DING!
As soon as the puzzle is revealed, Pat gives the wheel its final spin. Vowels will be worth nothing, and consonants will have $1,000 added to…$600, for a total of $1,600 apiece.
Angelo – No C
Kathleen – 1 L
Jayne – No S
Angelo – 1 R
Kathleen – 1 T
_ _ T _ _ L _ _ R
After thinking for a couple seconds, Kathleen calls out POTHOLDER, cementing her victory with an additional $3,200, causing her to celebrate once again by yelling “Whoo!” Pat comments that her third-graders probably don’t hear her yell “Whoo!” very often, to which Kathleen responds, “Quite often they do.”
Angelo unfortunately was unable to cash in thanks to his bad luck on the wheel, but he’ll be taking some nice parting gifts.
Jayne - $9,800
Angelo - $0
Kathleen - $25,050
With a near-main game sweep, Kathleen is our big winner and will be going to play the Bonus Round!
She and Pat take a walk to discuss all five prizes, which are still available this week. They include the motorcycle (which Kathleen says she will ride if she wins it), a ski trip/pickup truck pair (which Kathleen said she’ll also drive), a rafting adventure/Ford Explorer pair (which Kathleen said she’d have to do alone, though Pat suggests her husband could wait in the Explorer), the motorhome and, of course, the $25,000 cash.
W – H – E – E – L
Kathleen picks the second E, but instead of taking the envelope, she actually tries picking up the letter itself. Pat tells her she’d need a screwdriver for that as the audience laughs.

And with the R, S, T, L, N, E…
_ L _ _ _ R
Kathleen chooses P, M, H and A, which reveals…
_ L A _ _ R
Unfortunately, Kathleen has no idea what it is, spending her entire time looking back and forth from the used letter board and whispering to herself, not even venturing a guess of it being FLAVOR or anything close to it. Kathleen’s disappointed that she won’t be adding $25,000 to her total, but she seems happy that she’s already won more than that amount, bringing $25,050 back to More, Oklahoma with her.
Additional Notes
- The flashback clip playing during the intro is the episode where the winning contestant, in his excitement, actually lifted Pat onto the wheel.
- Thanks to a newspaper article I found on Kathleen’s win, I can confirm that this episode was taped December 9, 1999. The full article can be found here.
- Whoever was operating the podium’s score boards in round two realized Pat forgot the Puzzler, because when he said Kathleen’s total amount of money, the score board does not update when Pat says this.

- No vowels are bought in round three.
- A null cycle is intact in round three. Oddly, there might have been one edited out of round four, as after Kathleen uses her Free Spin, Pat randomly says, “Kathleen,” as if Angelo had called a wrong letter and it was now her turn.
- After round four, the scores on the podiums don’t disappear until after Pat’s final spin finishes, meaning they remain up until after round five technically begins, but they clear before the first letter is called.
- Pat initially tells Jayne that she goes first in round five, but quickly corrects himself before asking for a letter.
Tomorrow's recap will feature what may be the longest puzzle I've ever seen on the show, or at least in the Top 5 longest.
