Wow. Wheel does a lot of Sony movie promos today, but they would never promote a movie like that today. They probably would be too hesitant to even make any references to Stern today.
Great quality for a 1997 VHS recording! How often did you record off WABC compared to WLNY?

Although I preferred taping it on WABC because of the lack of a bug, I more often taped it from WLNY simply because it was on an hour earlier and I couldn't wait to see it!

I used to have this episode on tape myself, but for some reason only the first round was recorded, so I never saw the Howard Stern appearance. Definitely a very strange choice for a celebrity appearance, given how Wheel likes to promote itself as G-rated family entertainment. And Howard joking about Vanna carrying his baby? Combine that with the revealing bikini during the prize copy, which Pat makes reference to ("Thought I saw someone flossing there for a minute!"), and I highly doubt this episode would re-air in this format today. Howard probably wasn't wrong when he said Pat headed for the hills. Interesting that Pat was still getting used to the new board, as he acknowledged the ampersands. He stopped doing that pretty quickly, though.
And I never had it recorded, but I remember Vyky's first appearance. The only part I remember was her BR, which she didn't solve. For some reason, I remember her telling Pat, "Oh, I never would have guessed that." |

Although I preferred taping it on WABC because of the lack of a bug, I more often taped it from WLNY simply because it was on an hour earlier and I couldn't wait to see it! And for the last few years WLNY had Wheel, it was on two hours earlier. I imagine WLNY was also useful on days where WABC pre-empted Wheel like on Christmas. I also have a vivid memory of being able to watch the 1/1/2008 episode at my cousin's house on WLNY (we didn't get it at my house at the time) since it was pre-empted on WABC because of the Rose Bowl game (which aired on ABC affiliates every January 1 until 2010, moving to ESPN in subsequent years). Did WLNY carry the Saturday reruns of Wheel? I know WABC did not start carrying them until I believe the start of the 1999-2000 season. |

They aired the entire week of 9/11/01 except for that day itself, where as WABC pre-empted the rest of that week at the very least. They never aired weekend reruns though...I remember tuning a small black and white antenna TV to try to see the weekend reruns on WTNH in CT. Good times! |
