So, in my last recap, I thought long and hard on whether I should cover something from S18 or S22 next. I decided to go with the former (and thank you genius2751 for covering the latter). This episode also contains a rather amusing puzzle.
MEXICO WEEK
AIR DATE: 1/19/01
Tossup 1: On The Map
D _ _ / M _ _ N _ S
_ _ W _
Alma's pronounciation on the first word as DES MOINES, IOWA was questionable (pronounced as "DEL")...but it's accepted. These contestants wrapped up this week...
Alma Allen-Johnson (Pat wasn't very sure of the first name pronounciation.): Austin, TX. Medical admin. pursuing a Master's in public administration. Enjoys public speaking & singing. Married to Steven.
Olivia Naturman: Studio City, CA. Has a husband w/ 2 kids. Full-time UCLA Student who is also an executive search consultant.
Jared Ahrens: Tempe, AZ. ASU junior studying broadcasting. Also plays the French horn in his school's marching band, works for two student-produces news shows and a resident assistant in the halls.
College week material, perhaps?
Gift Tag: NOVICA
Round 1: Thing

_ _ / _ _ _ _
Alma & Olivia both strike out with N ($800) and T ($500), respectively. Jared lights up a $300 S, a $550 R, but then A for awful. Alma selects a $400 D (near $600), but then L for loss on $300. Olivia picks a $300 P, 2 O's, and the last consonant of a $800 J.
S O _ P
D _ / J O _ R
Olivia has a $850 serving of a SOUP DU JOUR.
Duds: N (Alma), T (Olivia), A (Jared), L (Alma)
Pre-Round 2 Scores:
Jared: Called a dud letter.
Alma: $1,000
Olivia: $850
This would fit under Food & Drink today. Also, the puzzle's basically French for Soup of the Day - shouldn't that be saved for an European-themed episode instead?

Fresh off his Jackpot win, Jared begins with an S for NOVICA and most of his spins land on the $900 under it this round: 4 T's, 4 E's, 2 H's, but then N for no and decides to use the FS. Next up are 3 $500 R's & 2 $900 L's.
