How does the old puzzle board have spacing between each letterbox (trilon) on the column?

From my research the puzzle board would be 102 inches tall (including the boarder) but I don't know how wide (because mine will be the modern 12 on the 1st and 4th row and 14 on the 2nd and 3rd row.) I don't know how much space to put between it, I hear the letter slides itself is 12 x 16.)
