I kinda have a fascination with the WoF sets partly because of evolution in technology. Also, I'm wondering what your favorite WoF set is.
(1981-1989) - sunflower backdrops
(1989-1991) - chevron backdrops; W H E E L envelopes during bonus round
(1991-1992) - the diamond-shaped backdrops first used at Radio City Music Hall in 1988 and a new wheel
(1992-1997) - pinwheel backdrops; in early 1997 the multicolored backdrops are retired completely
(1997-2003) - electronic puzzleboard replaces original one; bonus wheel debuts in 2001 replacing the five enveloped; eggcrate score displays get replaced by LCD displays in 2002
(2003-present) - the gold bordering around the wheel and puzzleboard is replaced by blue and purple LED bordering, the bordering around the wheel is made of Plexiglass; the bonus wheel receives the LED design in 2004; bigger score displays and revamped puzzleboard in 2007; new backdrop in late 2010.
And one thing about the previous backdrop with the "dips and columns", did that debut in 2003 or 2004?

(2003-present) - the gold bordering around the wheel and puzzleboard is replaced by blue and purple LED bordering, And the big screen shows the moving images that they still show today. And one thing about the previous backdrop with the "dips and columns", did that debut in 2003 or 2004? In a way, both. It was 2004, but in the 2003 - 04 season, not the start of the 2004 - 05 season. The debut week of it was March 15 - 19, 2004.

I keep reading about the new backdrop Wheel recently received. Are we talking about the big video screen behind the contestants, because I haven't noticed anything different.

Not the video screen...the actual backdrop of the whole set itself. Somebody can probably describe it better than I can...

My personal favorite is the set with the diamonds used in the early 90s. My second would be the pinwheel/fireworks backdrops, but I think they're a little too flashy compared to the mood of the diamond backdrops.

I personally like the 1975-81 set, with the original green contestant backdrops...and the only one the OP didn't mention.
Maybe I like it because it helped contribute to the "living room" feel of the show at the time, much like the Wheel being partly in shot of the puzzle board.

I am referring to the "updated" dips and columns set that was first seen during the Charlie tribute...but it is still significantly different to the point where it can hardly be considered the same set.
Look at a season 27 episode with the set and a season 28 one (or the Charlie tribute), and you'll notice the difference. The current one is much sleeker and cleaner than the previous one. Regardless, I doubt it's going anywhere anytime soon.

I like the fireworks set the most, but the diamonds set and the Woolery-era set were neat too.

The Diamond set was what really got me hooked on WHEEL since I was a small boy. I could imagine that set blending in with the current one if it were revamped. lol

I love the backdrops. They should bring it back, I don't care which one.

I like the firework/pinwheel designs best, then the random backdrops after that, that videowall is just downright hideous and unsightly

The thing is an eyesore and needs to go...badly.

The diamond backdrops were always my favorite. They were very classy.

Do you think they'd look great with current set if they were revamped to blend in?

^Diamonds on neon, would look better then that horrid, ugly, piece of trash, eyesore of a neon tube they call a videowall, but the fireworks or sunbursts would look the best i think with the current set

My favorite so far would be the 1989-90 (up to 1991 on daytime) chevron backdrops, followed closely by the diamond (when used at Television City in 1990-92, with the regular (1981-94) puzzleboard border) and the original sunflower/sunburst backdrops (1981-84) (With that said, there are actually three different sets of the sunflower backdrops used in the period 1981-89: the originals used from 1981 to 1984, the second set from 1984 to 1986, and the final set used from 1986 to 1989.
And what about the slot machine backdrops used on the 2005 Vegas shows and Casino Night Week in 2007 (the latter including the infamous "GLEAMING WHITE SAND BEACHES" incident)?
