Today is the Jeopardy! Season 37 finale, so I wanted to go over my thoughts on how the seasons went. Personally, I thought this season was very bittersweet.
Things I enjoyed:
• The slight modifications made to the set, especially the contestant lecterns being spaced farther apart than before COVID-19 and the host's lectern being redesigned. • This season went back to the usual 230 episodes after Season 36 ended in mid-June of last year. • Ken Jennings providing video clues in early episodes. • The globe intro making a comeback, albeit looking more modern than it did in the '80s and '90s (before the sushi bar set was put into use) • Three contestants (Kevin Walsh, Andy Wood, Brayden Smith) winning 4-5 matches before Alex's passing. • Some of the guest hosts I really enjoyed, especially Ken Jennings, Mayim Bialik, LeVar Burton, Joe Buck, and Buzzy Cohen. • Brian Chang winning 7 matches during Ken's stint as guest host • Zach Newkirk (carryover champ from Season 36) winning his next 2 matches after having to wait several months due to COVID travel restrictions; he defeats Brian Chang in his 5th appearance. • The 2021 Tournament of Champions. • Matt Amodio is currently riding a 17-game winning streak; and he's accumulated $547,600, surpassing Jason Zuffranieri as the third-highest money winner in regular competition. I especially like that he emulates some of James Holzhauer's strategies, in that he goes for clues on the bottom of the board first to amass as much money possible with which to wager when he hits a Daily Double. While he goes all-in during the Jeopardy! round, he's more conservative on his DD wagering in the Double Jeopardy! round when he has scores of $20K+ and his lead is significant. In a way, this is bringing back memories of when JH won 32 games back in Season 35 and obliterated a bunch of records. If Matt wins tonight's game, his run will continue into Season 38.
Moments that were sad or meh:
• The saddest moment this season was Alex passing away on November 8, 2020. • The Teachers Tournament, College Championship, and Teen Tournament were put on hiatus this season because of COVID restrictions and the rotation of guest hosts. But I am certain that next season, TPTB will resume holding these tournaments. • No audiences present in the studio. • Brayden Smith passed away in February 2021 after winning 5 games. • Some of the guest hosts were mediocre or cringy – especially Dr. Oz, Katie Couric, Bill Whitaker, George Stephanopoulos, Anderson Cooper.

But I am certain that next season, TPTB will resume holding these tournaments. We already know the College Championship is being spun off into a separate ABC primetime series. I think the spinoff will be a different format than the College Championship we've been used to seeing on regular series – 15 undergrad college students competing for $100,000 and the format being the same as the ToC. The National College Championship will probably be teams competing with one another, more or less like the All-Star games in Season 35. Besides, I don't think the Teen Tournament or Teachers Tournament will get spun off.

Jeopardy season 37 was a long, strange trip to say the least. They did a nice job with the new COVID-friendly set and the new host podium looks really good. Liked the logo for this season as well, though it would've been really cool if they brought back the rolling globe intro (though the small clips in the intro were nice). At least Alex got to host nearly half the season, it's just too bad he didn't get to give a proper goodbye since it wasn't known at the time it would be his final taping. The parade of guest hosts were very hit or miss, a few I thought were really good (Ken, Sanjay, Anderson, George, and David), a few that were good not great (Mike Richards, Katie, Aaron, Mayim, Buzzy, Robin, Levar), and a few that were not good (Bill, Dr. Oz, Savannah, Joe Buck). Brian and Brayden (RIP) were the two most memorable contestants before Matt, besides them a majority of the champions only lasted 1-2 days.
Matt's run couldn't have come at a better time for the show given the controversy surrounding the host decision, since it's brought some media attention outside of the host decision. Just wish he's had more competition during his run, at least the last two shows came down to the end and Nicole tonight was excellent besides her Daily Double miss in round 2 and missing in Final. I still find him kind of annoying, but he's growing on me some. We shall see him again next season, playing with yet another host.

It was a tough season as a loyal fan and I'm sure the same can be said of the show's crew. However, I think Mike did a respectable job of easing the transition. As tiresome as the guest host phase could be at times, it would have been incredibly difficult as a viewer to get accustomed to a new permanent host on the Monday after Alex's final episode. Proceeding in this manner was respectful of his legacy, celebrated him, allowed America due time to grieve, and gave viewers the opportunity to see what a post-Trebek Jeopardy! would look like.
I can't really speak to the process of choosing Alex's replacement for next season as I don't really know the ins-and-outs of what went on in those Sony boardrooms, but I hope Mike settles into the role as best he can as he hosts the daily version. He may not have been a lot of people's first choice, but he is among the last TV personalities who is a bona fide host (as opposed to a comedian-turned-host, actor-turned-host, newscaster-turned-host, etc.). From a television executive perspective, that's a major plus in his column and one that I think has been overlooked through the fog of the viewer reaction this week. I am sure Mayim will similarly ease into the role for the primetime edition(s).
Beyond that, I do wonder what changes the show will make during the transition from a production standpoint, both in front of and behind the camera. At the time Drew became the host of TPIR, that show underwent several drastic cosmetic changes and even refreshed the music. Will Mike take a page from CBS' book and do the same thing? Regardless of such changes being considered overdue in many fans' eyes, I think it could be a very good scheme for the show as it symbolizes the passing of the torch from one era to the next. I am pretty sure that the show ended production for Season 37 back in either April or May, giving the team plenty of time to consider and implement new a brand new set design and/or commission a new music package. Even though the previous set underwent slight changes to account for distancing requirements set in accordance with California law, it would make sense to undertake a complete overhaul at this point rather than down the road as an afterthought. With production set to resume shortly, I am sure that changes that had been considered - if any - have already been implemented.
In the end, the show is not about the host him/herself, but celebrating contestants and knowledge for being the bright spots of our society. I hope that people don't forget that as some mindless platitude, but rather the keystone of the success of this show. The format is too advantageous to tamper with, and that alone will truly allow it to proceed from strength-to-strength.

All in all, Season 37 was, interesting to say the least. Of course with the pandemic, Alex’s death, and the whole guest host thing, it’s mixed. Some hosts have wowed me; Ken, Buzzy, Mayim, Robin, David; some were in the middle; Mike, Katie, Anderson, George, Levar; and some, not so much; Dr. Oz and Bill. I liked the set modifications; however, I believe there should be a new set and theme. We’ve moved forward; this is now the post-Alex era of Jeopardy.
