Can you figure out this puzzle?
S17, EPISODE #3159: HALLOWEEN WEEK
Airdate: 10/28/99
Pat nearly forgot to reveal the answer to this intro puzzle - KALEIDOSCOPE.
Anyway, here's Thursday's contestants:
Joel Byers: Los Angeles, CA (by way of Iowa). Co-owner of a battery distributorship based in SoCal with a friend from college.
Cathy Barnes: Saltsburg, PA. Nurse who's married to Brad with 2 kids (Michael's in the audience, Bethany's at home). She has pen pals in literally every state...and also in Africa and Greece.
Jamin Duran: Cocoa, FL. Percussionist (he played in college, but is now in a hiatus) who's now a technician with access control company. He's also currently engaged for a year (and maybe he'll walk down the aisle next year).
QUICK PERFECTION! Joel solves RESTAURANT CHEF. Can he turn that 3 into a 6?
PEACHES is a no-no. They were RECIPES (although Pat jokingly mispronounced the answer).
1ST PRIZE ADDED TO WHEEL: Toshiba rear projection TV (marked BIG SCREEN), $3,000
Cathy solves "THE RAVEN" BY EDGAR ALLEN POE to keep some cardboard. Pat makes a bird sound afterward.
DUDS: F (Jamin), I (Joel)
BANKRUPT: Cathy
2ND PRIZE ADDED TO WHEEL: trip to the Furnace Creek Inn & Ranch (marked DEATH VALLEY), $3,664
JACKPOT ROUND
JACKPOT! Cathy grabs an extra $8,100 with PIKES PEAK PERFORMANCE.
DUDS: T (Joel), L & D (Cathy), H (Joel)
BANKRUPTS: 2 (Jamin)
Cathy solves HERMAN & LILY MUNSTER.
LOSE A TURN: Jamin
BANKRUPTS: 3 (Joel twice, Cathy once)
DING DING! DING DING!
FINAL SPIN: $1,500
Cathy: T ($3,300)
Jamin: S
Joel: D ($1,500)
Joel solves TRAP DOOR.
DUD DURING SPEED-UP: S (Jamin)
FINAL SCORES
No, Pat. It's a one-and-done scenario on this show. It's definitely not like Price...
WINNINGS SO FAR: $22,150
BANKRUPT TRASH: $800
BONUS ROUND
LETTER PICKED: the other E (a wolf howled)
RSTLNE is stingy to Cathy:
CDMA gives a couple more...
She quietly guesses ATLANTA, CALCUTTA and JAMAICA - all not even close to the city of WICHITA, Kansas. That means no Frankenstein's Castle tour for her (the top of the envelope shows a witch on a broom).
CATHY'S FINAL TOTAL: $17,400 ($14,400 plus the TV)
The hosts really like this week's set - really scary and really ugly. Just look at that winged goblin!
OVERALL THOUGHTS: An onslaught of penalties in the later half of the game, but at least Cathy came through with a nice Jackpot win. Thought the Bonus Round was solvable with what she had, but oh well. 6/10
