The Opener
S16, EPISODE #2952: $HOPPING $PREE
Airdate: 10/13/98
Tuesday's $hopper$:
Scot Nidiffer: El Cajon, CA. Computer engineer who's engaged to Kristen (they plan to get married in 2000).
Mary Spikes: Willingboro, NJ. Registered nurse who works in the intensive care unit. She also has 3 adult kids and 2 grandkids and enjoys gardening and riding her bike (she was in the MS150 last year and plans to do it again this year).
Heather Byers: Houston, TX. Graduate student at Texas Women's University studying physical therapy who got her undergrad degree at UT Austin. She enjoys sports, aerobics and is learning to play golf.
Mary locates THE PARTHENON IN ATHENS, Greece.
DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING!
Yep, it's time for the $3,000 Puzzler!
No guess from her. They were MARBLE COLUMNS.
LOSE A TURN: Scot
1ST PRIZE ADDED TO WHEEL: a $2,500 Cabela's GC (marked Outdoors)
Heather solves A PHASE OF THE MOON OR A DINNER ROLL. And yes, she knows that's a Crescent, meaning she's a mere $50 off the lead.
DUD: U (Mary)
2ND PRIZE ADDED TO WHEEL: a week's vacation at the Orlando Marriott + a day at Gatorland (marked Florida), $4,100
JACKPOT ROUND
THIS WEEK'S SPONSOR: University Games
PERFECTION! Heather solves ANTONIO BANDERAS AS ZORRO for the outright lead.
LEFT BEHIND IN POT: $6,950
Just before Mary BANKRUPTed, we saw her land on the Florida wedge prior.
Mary solves SPELLING & HONEY BEE.
AIRED DUDS: R (Scot), F (Heather), M (Scot)
AIRED BANKRUPT: Mary
PERFECTION #2! Mary solves MAIN ENTRANCE.
Yes, there's still time for another puzzle.
No, Pat. It's not "People named Ed".
DING DING! DING DING!
FINAL SPIN: $250
Heather: S ($250)
Scot: 3 R's ($750)
Mary: N
Heather: L
Scot: E
Mary: 2 C's ($500)
Heather: T ($500)
Heather munches on some RITZ CRACKERS to fend off the other lady for good.
DUDS: N (Mary), L (Heather)
FINAL SCORES
WINNINGS SO FAR: $19,050
BANKRUPT TRASH: $1,800
BONUS ROUND
LETTER PICKED: H (wheelfan82 cut out that part in his copy, but I did get to see it in the end of this segment)
RSTLNE gives Heather three:
CDHA puts her to half...
She's wrong thinking it's a compound word (like me, unfortunately) with COURTMATE, DORTMATE, SHORTCAKE and some other gibberish. That was a MORTGAGE and Heather can't go to Rome.
HEATHER'S FINAL TOTAL: $10,150 (all cash)
Pat & Vanna showcase a statue showcasing questionable positions of the Cherus and Pooties (whatever that is). They cover up the private parts afterward.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Rare to see a six-rounder. If this was back in 1994, that wouldn't be the case here (thanks to a null cut). However, a rather bumpy R4 and a Bonus Round loss brings it down to a 6/10. So close to a 7...
