...I fell a bit behind on retro recaps, but the postings of my recaps for this theme week fall on the appropriate days.
Also, this is episode #3000. Enjoy.
S16, EPISODE #3000: HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Airdate: 12/18/98
Playing on the show's actual 3000th episode:
Yolanda Bradshaw: South San Francisco. Aspiring actress/mom of a 1-year-old boy (River) who enjoys cooking
Tamara Alaniz: San Bernardino. CSU San Bernardino student who's majoring in environmental science. She's also married 3 years to Matthew with a son named Alexander (yes really).
Mark Spagnolo: McKees Rock, PA. Advertising sales rep for a major magazine in Pittsburgh who graduated from a college in West Virginia 2 years ago.
It's getting close to THE FIRST DAY OF WINTER and Tamara's right with that guess. But can she be over 6 grand already?
She says JACK FROST on the buzzer...and it's accepted (she initially whispered the bottom word).
LOSE A TURN: Yolanda
1ST PRIZE ADDED TO WHEEL: a $2,500 Donna Karan DKNY GC (marked fashion; we're sure Vanna shot that in NYC)
BTW, Tamara did solve the Puzzler on time. Now it's time for her to continue her spinning journey...
Tamara solves IF I CAN MAKE IT THERE, I'LL MAKE IT ANYWHERE...but she's wrong thinking the answer this bonus is Hollywood. It's actually New York (from the Frank Sinatra song).
DUDS: S (Mark), D (Yolanda)
BANKRUPT: Tamara
2ND PRIZE ADDED TO WHEEL: equestrian vacation to Devon via Cross Country International (marked ENGLAND), $5,838
JACKPOT ROUND
Yolanda solves FRAN DRESCHER AS THE NANNY.
DUD: L (Mark)
LEFT BEHIND IN POT: $7,600
Definitely NOT a SUPER-DUPER round, but Yolanda finally gets that one.
AIRED DUDS: N (Yolanda), T (Tamara), L (Mark), O (Yolanda), C (Tamara), H (Mark), V (Tamara)
BANKRUPT: Yolanda
DQ: Mark’s V repeat
DING DING! DING DING!
FINAL SPIN: $300
Tamara solves RED POINSETTIAS.
DUDS: C (Tamara), L (Mark), J (Yolanda), M (Tamara), K (Mark; last two were after bell)
FINAL SCORES
WINNINGS SO FAR: $15,000
BANKRUPT TRASH: $10,550
BONUS ROUND
LETTER PICKED: L (for luck)
Interesting RSTLNE setup:
VMDI yields one more...
Tamara tries to sound it out (she did get the bottom word), but can't solve SHOE SIZE for the VAN.
TAMARA'S FINAL TOTAL: $11,750 (all cash)
Vanna and Pat talk about stuff I have no flying clue about.
Full credit roll in the end.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: We started off fine, but once $5K came into play, our contestants started crapping out on what really were solvable puzzles. It's a close one, but I'll spot it at a 4/10. I'll tell you; I'd rank it higher if it was on a later season because we don't get much presence of the $5K wedge anymore.
However, I would gladly take this episode over the 5000th (which was meant to be a milestone episode) AND the 6000th.
This week gave away $133,291.
