Talking it over with a couple other people, it seems that recently, Pat's been asking contestants to say the whole puzzle again if the contestant pauses, just in case. I know that the continuation rule has caused post-buzzer solves to be ruled incorrect, and we had something similar happen in the SU this season, but what happened here just was really unfortunate.

It sucks, there's going to be social media outrage over it when it was technically in the rules, just like the adding of AND in a Crossword, but it's technically fine, while three different episodes allowed solves that shouldn't have been.

I want to say the judging has just been sloppy this season? I don't know if anyone's to blame there, or if the contestants are just pressing their luck more times than normal, but there've been so many rough calls in the past three months that shouldn't have happened.

I'd be fine if we amended the continuation rule to allow long pauses if the words are said in full before time runs out, but this is such a weird fringe case, that I don't know if we're practically going to see it again.

Was it really necessary to add the extra WAITING to the puzzle in round 1?

An unfortunate ruling in the bonus round for sure, but I do think it was the right call. She never put the whole puzzle together.

I spy a null cycle on Shelly's first spin of Round 2 because it was approaching the Million Dollar Wedge then when the overhead shot came on it was approaching one of the bankrupts.

I'm so sick of these mystery wedge flips being bankrupts. It feels like so many of them have been bankrupts lately. Maybe they have been.

Ooh boy that is one strict and painful ruling in the bonus round. I do agree with the call but that absolutely hurts still.

I can't really see it in the spin pattern. It's also a What Are You Doing? which begs for N, G, and I to be called first (plus there's an AND in the puzzle).

First off, can I just say that the new Spider-Man movie is an absolute masterpiece? I won’t spoil it for you, but it brings out the two previous Spider-Man incarnations.

That being said, if I was in Pat’s position in the Bonus Round (which I had off RSTLNE), I would’ve had her say the answer again just to show that she really got it.

It's 30 seconds on Jeopardy!, you just need to write it all down.

It's whatever the time limit is during the audition, just finish it before "pencil's down", although Charlene's first guess was valid and would have been marked wrong.

Five-figure performances by 2nd and 3rd is what saved this show overall.

The other show that probably has the most strict rule was probably Sale of the Century with Jim Perry, although this applied mostly to the Winner's Big Money Game round where a full answer is deemed immediately, and to a slightly lesser degree, the Speed-Up round. But remembering the "as long as you start before the buzzer" rule, just don't be afraid to go back and start over, and this is what cost her.

I'll bet the producers will have a special meeting involving this special pause rule, since there really needs to be a definitive point since there are differing opinions regarding what constitutes a pause, since if Charlene said "Choosing the righttttttt", by at least holding out the "t" sound before she immediately said "word", I'd feel that there was no pause and that would be acceptable. It's like holding that one note in a musical instrument as long as you could before moving on to the next one, and a "whole rest" is just too long according to the EP.

"That other show" on the first line...I didn't think it was humanly possible to narrow it down like this.

In the video compilation I posted above, most pauses under 3 seconds are accepted. This one was about 5 seconds.

That being said, the first known time this rule came up back in Season 31, the pause was only about 0.7 seconds and was not accepted, not helped by the fact that she said the last word after the buzzer.

I actually agree about awarding her the win. This isn't like the AND rule in crossword puzzles. That is a clear and concise rule, don't add any words, including AND, when solving the puzzle. Regardless of people who don't like the rule, that rule is at least crystal clear.

This rule seems incredibly murky. Not even here, on this site with super fans, does anyone seem to clearly know exactly what the rule is. It certainly seemed like a long pause, I won't argue, but there doesn't seem to be any objective measure used on what constitutes a long pause, which kind of bothers me.

Just caught up on this episode and... yeah. If that's their rule and they "have to go by it" as Pat often says on the Celebrity episodes, then so be it — but it's a terrible rule and needs to be rewritten or eliminated.

IMO — and I suspect this is how the average viewer would feel about this — if the contestant says all the correct words, in the correct order, with nothing extra added between, it should be a win. I understand you can't have contestants pausing after the buzzer, but if there's a pause, as long as they resume their answer before the buzzer — which Charlene clearly did — that should be fine. It shouldn't matter if the pause was half a second, 5 seconds or 9 seconds. The bonus round (and speed-up round) aren't like the toss-ups where you can't pause because the expectation is you're supposed to know the answer and be ready to give the whole thing the moment you hit the button.

I really don't want to see this happen again, because it's equivalent to the constant overly picky rulings about pronunciations and spellings on Jeopardy! that turned me off to that show to the point that I seldom watch it anymore.
