Here's an interesting question for the class.
We had some discussions in the Discord regarding the auditions to replace Bob Barker on Price in 2007, and it became apparent there was hardly any diversity among those who auditioned. It got me to thinking about Wheel which is going to have a new host/hostess most likely some time this decade, and frankly I don't see them embracing diversity despite the times evolving. Even Jeopardy! has a decent chance of having Ken Jennings assume the full-time hosting position, but it is not exactly the best choice in terms of diversity. Assuming Wheel does not deviate from the host formula and sticks with, for lack of a better term, "a white guy", who would you like to see?

I actually think they might put too much focus on diversity. Don't get me wrong, as I like to see some diversity. Just make sure the new candidate also knows how to host.

Well, assuming that they're going to stick with someone who's strictly a broadcaster and not an entertainer, I think either Carson Daly or ET's Kevin Frazier would be good candidates.

I still stand by my preference to Neil Patrick Harris. He's one of those celebrities that people of all ages love, he did a great job hosting HQ Words, and him hosting Wheel would increase its already-growing LGBTQ+ following and get rid of its reputation as being a show that only conservatives watch (and yet conservatives are the ones making jokes about how our president does speeches in the afternoon because he "has to be home for Wheel of Fortune" 🙄)

I think Harris would make a great Pat Sajak. The big question for me, however, is who will be the next Vanna White. Considering that finding a replacement for her predecessor wasn't easy, I'm expecting that finding a successor will be even more difficult given her longevity with the show and the show's popularity. Nevertheless, I see a growing trend of people involved in show business with a small-at-most amount of game show experience going on to become a big name in game shows. With that being said, I wouldn't be surprised if Mikki Padilla (co-host of GSN's Catch 21) goes on to become Vanna's successor.

^And Maggie Sajak isn't an option because...?
As much as I meme Tanika Ray as my pick, I doubt she'd stay as just a "social media correspondent" if her dad leaves.

I don't love NPH. Do a little research, and you will find that he is a pompous, self-absorbed asshole. How is on camera and nothing like who he is off camera.

I feel like they're going to want to make the show feel more contemporary once Pat retires, and that could include picking a host who isn't a white male. I think Michael Strahan would be great if he's up for it. Or Brooke Burns.
Neil Patrick Harris could be a good choice too. And sure, he might be a little pompous and self-absorbed, but so are a lot of celebrities and broadcasters. Pat Sajak included, frankly. I looked up reasons why people don't like Neil, and haven't found anything that would make me outright turn against him. Of course there's always Mark L. Walberg, assuming the Sony execs don't consider him too old for the role.
As for Maggie, I see her more as a potential replacement for Vanna, albeit with an expanded role.

If there is any takeaway from the happenings of the show next door, it's that star power doesn't necessarily translate into universal acclaim. You're finding fewer bona fide game show hosts due to the trend of actors and entertainers filling those roles dating back to the hirings of Drew Carey and Steve Harvey. That's not to say that you have to be a seasoned GS professional to do it well, of course. Mario Lopez strikes me as somebody who is cross-generationally familiar, pretty well liked overall, and a good on-camera talent. I've heard that he was actually the producers' favorite to succeed Barker on TPIR. As someone who has been in the entertainment business for a while, he also understands the weight of these roles and the significance of stepping into the shoes of a legend. Like Pat, he also seems to age slowly.
Just please don't drag it out like they did on J! or allow it to be a fraction as polarizing.
Side note: And not that it would (or should) ever happen, but I think Mike Richards may have actually made a fantastic host for Wheel. But obviously better to have a stand up guy in that role than a grade A jerk.

But obviously better to have a stand up guy in that role than a grade A jerk. I don't think they can possibly screw up the host search as much as they did on J! or make it nearly as polarizing. Wheel, whether you like it or not, is very "game-showy". It's stereotypical in a lot of ways; flashy set, beautiful model, colorful props, etc. For better or worse, it embodies what the U.S. perceives as game shows. This also means that the host is not going to matter as much as J! did, not to say Pat isn't as iconic as Alex, but we have not heard a peep about any potential successors for Pat while Alex's were being discussed as far back as ~2012. Anybody can do Pat's job and his successor is going to be incredibly random. Also this has been discussed before, but the idea of Mike hosting wheel wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad as J! for the same reasons I've mentioned before, and it would not have been close to show-ruining as his hire was. Wheel would not have had the same impact because nobody would have cared.

I've seen Joel McHale's name tossed around as well. He may be a white male, but he has the experience, both as a game show and TV host and as a Wheel contestant, plus he's attractive.

I just hope Sony learns from their mistakes with the Jeopardy host carousel. I like the idea of Neil Patrick Harris hosting, Joel McHale wouldn't be bad. Joey Fatone might be a good option too, or Alfonso Ribiero if he decided to leave America's Funniest Home Videos for Wheel or AFV were to end by the time Pat retires. It's probably more likely Maggie would be Vanna's successor, but I do wonder if they have her in mind to actually replace Pat as host with her social media and on-camera work this season. I have to think Sony has been discussing potential successors internally for at least the last few years, considering Pat's in his 70s and the health scare he had in 2019.

I think Alex passing away made that not only take a backseat, but was so initially disastrous that Sony backed up the Brinks truck to give Pat and Vanna whatever they wanted to stay. After all the bad press Jeopardy! got, I don’t think Sony is interested in going through this charade in the immediate future.

I have the sense it could be a one leaves all leave situation

Wheel would not have had the same impact because nobody would have cared. Exactly my thoughts. I literally said, when they announced Mike as the Jeopardy host, "I think he'd make a much better host of Wheel when Pat leaves." Obviously that'll never happen now.

I have the sense it could be a one leaves all leave situation It's possible, but I could also see Vanna staying on at least one season after Pat just to keep one familiar face there so it's not a total shock to the system for longtime viewers.

I remember Vanna saying somewhere years ago that they made a pact to leave at the same time.

I would love to see Jim Thornton take over for Pat, he’s friendly and witty enough. Am I alone in thinking he’d be great?

Since Jim's in his late 50s and I'd count on the new host to run a long time, I'd have someone in their 30s-40s; besides, if Jim takes the host job, they'll more likely need a new announcer. I agree though that Neil Patrick Harris would be a good fit as the next Pat; Maggie would also do great as the next Vanna. I also agree that Mike Richards would've been great for Wheel, but he ended up making a fatal miscalculation.
