^ And I'm guessing the reason it was self-contained was because, as with most syndicated shows at the time, it was "bicycled". CJ! and J!NCC are also the only ABC game shows with continuity and necessity to air in a certain order, not counting the reality shows. They don't have the advantage the other shows do of moving around the best episodes to air early in the season. I really thought CJ! was going to be self-contained for this reason, but I guess Davies is the opposite of Pat Sajak in that he never wants to take champions away from any version of J!, given its the main ratings draw these days, so much that 25 Words or Less is trying to capitalize on it now. Although with it being a tournament, they would have at least some flexibility in the order of airing of the shows. That being, the quarterfinals could be aired in any order, as could the semi-final rounds. So, if (let's say) taped episodes #1 and #2 were both not the best, they could choose to put them as the 4th and 8th aired shows if they wanted to, and put some later tapings that came out better in early in the season. Not fully flexible like most of the shows, but more so than the standard episodes of Jeopardy with returning champions would be.

I'm watching the premiere right now. They are using the 2021 theme with guitars. I noticed that. And I really liked the opening sequence...if only they used that for the daily syndicated series instead of last season's open. Or it could carry over to the syndicated series for Season 40. The guitar theme could also carry over to the syndicated series later this season.
