It’s strange that Mayim Bialik hasn’t officially inked a deal with this project. I wonder if there’s a holdup concerning a deal on the main show, or alternatively if there’s been a contract dispute and ABC is looking to move forward without her. As far as I know, all the network game shows typically have their talent in place by the announcement date.
Even as an unwavering Ken Jennings supporter, I wouldn’t mind seeing these celebrity events hosted by Mayim, and even think her vibe would make for a fun change of pace specifically in this format.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I can get on board with this. Being both Celebrity and prime time is likely to make it stupidly easy compared to the normal syndicated series (itself supposedly easier than the Fleming versions).
Not to mention that the purists want to play along with all 30 clues in each round, though maybe they'll be more careful when picking celebrities so that we don't have to hear the "end of round signal" four times an hour.
Tournaments involving normal contestants are fine, though.

^Since it'll be on network primetime there will be less commercial time, so it's more likely they will be able to play every clue.
I just knew ABC would do Celebrity Jeopardy at some point. We'll see if Mayim hosts, or will they have Ken do the celebrity version also if he's selected as the permanent host... or does ABC go with their own choice?

In another thread about Season 39 changes, I mentioned having attended the season opener @ Sony earlier this week. I also grabbed tickets for the "Special" Jeopardy taping on Sunday, September 11 in the afternoon. At least two people connected to the show have confirmed that they are filming Celebrity Jeopardy! that day, and the Second Chance Tournament is filming later that week.
If you check the official Jeopardy tickets calendar, the morning shoot is from about 9:40 am - 2:10 pm, and the afternoon shoot is from 2:55 pm - 7:25 pm. That's a VERY long tape day for Jeopardy so I'm definitely bringing snacks & water. Jeopardy! has not announced how many episodes of Celebrity J! they will be filming... but on that production timeline I'm guessing about 6-8 episodes max.

I wouldn't be surprised if these are hour-long episodes separated into two half-hour games with the same three contestants, similar to what CWOF does. When CWOF had a fall premiere last season, it had a 13 episode run. That makes me wonder if CJ! will have additional tape dates in October.

CWOF and CJ! will very likely have the same number of episodes. CWOF S1 only had eight.
The 5ish-hour day for J! is similar to Wheel tapings, so assuming CWOF's tapings are only two eps per day, with four tapings days confirmed through 9/1, CJ! is probably taping four eps per day, which would have them set through October 16. I could see both shows having 12 eps this season.

The first batch of contestants was officially announced yesterday:
- Simu Liu - Constance Wu - B.J. Novak - Michael Cera - Candace Parker - Iliza Shlesinger - Ray Romano - Aisha Tyler - Patton Oswalt
Speaking with Damian Holbrook of TV Guide Magazine, EP Michael Davies said that the series will be a tournament, though he has not specified the format.

With 13 episodes, the easiest way to bracket it is to have 27 celebs play in 9 quarterfinal games, divide the winners into 3 semifinal games, then one finals match.
How many J! spinoffs have not had continuity with champs or a tournament format? Jep! did not at all during its run. RnR and Sports did not have champs at first but did add them later, IIRC.

Honestly, I could perfectly imagine Constance being on J! for some reason.

Kind of stretching the definition of "spinoff" here, but AFAIK the 1974-1975 syndie J! didn't have returning champs in the traditional sense; all of the players were former big winners from the daytime show, but each episode (the show aired weekly) was self-contained, with three new players each week.

^ And I'm guessing the reason it was self-contained was because, as with most syndicated shows at the time, it was "bicycled".
Though off-topic, a better question might be, what syndicated game shows prior to 1988 had continuity or champions outside of special weeks, if any? Family Feud didn't have them in syndication until the Combs era.
CJ! and J!NCC are also the only ABC game shows with continuity and necessity to air in a certain order, not counting the reality shows. They don't have the advantage the other shows do of moving around the best episodes to air early in the season. I really thought CJ! was going to be self-contained for this reason, but I guess Davies is the opposite of Pat Sajak in that he never wants to take champions away from any version of J!, given its the main ratings draw these days, so much that 25 Words or Less is trying to capitalize on it now.

The first two episodes are titled: "Quarterfinal #1: Simu Liu, Ego Nwodim and Andy Richter" and "Quarterfinal #2: Eddie Huang, Reggie Watts and Iliza Shlesinger". Simu and Iliza were the only known names up to this point. Andy makes two CWOF contestants.

They're also doing it Super Jeopardy! style and having a semi-final immediately following 3 quarterfinal matches, with those who advance from the semifinals playing for $1 million in the finals.
It is also confirmed that there will be a Triple Jeopardy! round, but they're scaling down the values for the entire game. So, $100-$500 in Single, $200-$1000 in Double, and $300-$1500 in Triple.

So if there are fixed payouts for everyone in the end, is the dollar sign pointless just like it was in the College Championship series?

It'll be interesting to see this whole thing in action. I wasn't expecting the old dollar amounts to come back. I anticipate Davies has other ideas he wants to introduce as the season progresses. Here's hoping for the best.

I'm watching the premiere right now. They are using the 2021 theme with guitars.
