You just confirmed a theory I (and probably others) have had for years... that M.G.'s last taping was the final taping day of 1988, and Charlie's first day back was the first tape date of 1989. Thank you so much!

😳
On the one hand, massive kudos for putting this all together.
On the other hand...wow, the airdates are all over the place. I'm guessing you guys have some contestant names to explain the slotting. [EDIT: Turns out this info's been given in the numerous Video Vault threads...though that still doesn't explain how you guys got all the episode numbers.]
That all aside, good lord did M.G. Kelly get shafted - he was introduced to audiences by Pat and Vanna as being Wheel's new announcer, got an opportunity to audition to replace Pat on the daytime show, and helped smooth the transition from Pat to Rolf...and then he got the boot during the Christmas/New Year's taping break after just 100 nighttime episodes (Don Pardo did the New York weeks) and (by my count) 84 daytime episodes. I hope he at least got a proper goodbye and Charlie's return wasn't abrupt.

The breakup of MG and Wheel wasn't amicable IIRC. He was screwing up a lot when reading his prize copies and things had to be dubbed over and re-recorded a lot, especially towards the end. Bringing Charlie back was the best thing Wheel could have done. He will always be my favorite announcer. According to the Wiki, there wasn't any mention made on air of the transition.

Pure speculation, but I'd bet the only reason they didn't hire Charlie directly after Jack's passing, was the little problem of Charlie still being under contract to Chuck Barris (he was announcing both Newlywed Game and Dating Game, both of which didn't survive the 1988-1989 season). And when they realized that a) M.G. absolutely sucked, and b) Charlie was available, they basically told M.G. "don't let the door hit you on the way out".

We got the episode numbers simply from me digitizing the entire season in the order that GSN aired it as we know they went in procduction order. There are only a few episodes in question as there is one week that Alex and I are both missing an episode from.

FYI, we have created a second guide by airdate which includes contestant names. I will likely post that at a later date as well.

I've tried to document as many of my sources as possible. Other than newspaper articles, original broadcast uploads on Youtube are extremely helpful if you look for clues in the commercials or voiceovers in the credits (eg. coming up tonight its a new episode of so and so, also any movie release commercials help.)
Also, scavenge the Commercial Compilation Youtube videos. They may have a closing/intro of a Wheel episode and not mention it.

Since it's been established when was the last Syndicated taping at NBC, I wonder when was the last Daytime taping?
According to the timeline, writer/director Stephen Burrows was a contestant on an episode that was taped on June 10, 1989. There was an unplanned preemption on June 9. It involved the Men's Single Semifinals Round of the 1989 French Open. All the other NBC Daytime game shows were preempted by it, too. But since this taping was after that preemption, at least there weren't any unaired episodes after that.

Sorry to kick this one back up as I'm never wholly sure on the etiquette regarding aged posts (albeit a few months), but the slate to the 1000th show says 8- 17-88.

Going to try to confine this to no more than 2-3 batches.
By virtue of another project I'm working on, I've been provided the very tail end of quite a few eps of the show (usually just the fee plugs and credits) from this season. Usually just the last segment:
As a result, have some new info to add for the first third of the season (Through OAD 12/2/88). All info is based on the Los Angeles market, which by 1988 would have been a satellite market, which by default used the "A" broadcast schedule. This creates one discrepancy vs. the chart, adds several other airdates, and confirms other dates. (Not every Jeopardy was taped, and many start in the break between)
New Dates / LA (A-Market) Revisions: (9/5/88 to 12/2/88) October 4, 1988: S-1002 October 6, 1988: (Listed as S-1000, S-1003 aired in Los Angeles market) October 7, 1988: S-0998 October 10, 1988: S-1004 October 11, 1988: S-1000 (Los Angeles Airdate) December 2, 1988, S-1043
LA Matches Existing Airdate: S-0977, S-0978, S-0994, S-0995, S-0999, S-1001, S-1005 to S-1010, S-1012, S-1019, S-1034 through S-1037, S-1041, and S-1044 airdates match the chart.
Any airdate not listed in the above was not present in the footage, however, the Premiere Week, 1st Wipeout Week, and two NYC weeks were known to have the same airdate in many if not all markets and aired in order.

Nanaged to screen the footage I have from another third tonight as well. Not a *lot* of Wheel in the next cluster, but what WAS there was generally useful. Little too late to edit the last post, but:
New Airdates (12/5/88 to 3/10/89)
Airdate/Ep #'s not in grid (LA/"A" Order and Satellite): February 1, 1989: S-1064 February 2, 1989: S-1065 February 3, 1989: S-1067 February 17, 1989: S-1082 (2/17/89 was also the last nighttime show of MG Kelly in first run, so this was his last ep seen in 'A' Markets. Charlie debuted the following Monday) March 2, 1989: S-1097 March 10, 1989: S-1093
LA Airdates match existing grid: S-1089, S-1094

Wow! Thank you for all of this info! When I have a little free time I’ll go through it with Alex and will update things. Thanks so much again! Regarding the S-1000 conflict, as that might be the most "?" worthy data point so far (about to tackle the last third) The closing of S-1003 is on the same tape as J! nighttime episode 0939, which corresponds to the October 6th, 1988 airdate as per a (soon to be filled) gap on J! Archive. In the same episode, War of the Worlds is promoted as debuting "This Wednesday". Fast-forward ahead, and Jeopardy! 942, which is in the archive, OAD 10/11/88, has the same show promoted as "tomorrow" - and the close of S-1000 (as per your uploads), starting from the fee plugs and including past where yours cuts out, is what immediately precedes J! 942. Other markets might've been doing their own thing, but that's what KCOP in LA (who had the rights in LA until Fall '89) was up to.

Elise, I keep an episode guide spreadsheet that Adam wheelfan82 and I have worked on for seasons 1-11 to document my newspaper clippings and air dates. If you by chance have shows from season 5 1987-1988 (Season 4 Jeopardy), I can send you my spreadsheet to confirm my air dates.

One of the facilitators would be the best way to put it. 99% of the episodes only have, if anything, the last couple minutes of the show (pre-roll usually starting somewhere between closing chat and end of the credits). Without actual footage of season 5 (or preceding) to compare against, I don't know how much help I'll be (I only have ~10 episodes), but I'm always happy to take a look.

It's definitely tough to figure out stuff from these early episodes, especially if we don't know anything about the show proper. We're lucky if we even get a Bonus Round puzzle during the credits. That being said, even without knowing a category, those can be helpful for figuring out dates. Where it would be most helpful, besides seasons 5 and 6, would be season 2. GSN reran it a bunch and we've got a ton of episodes with relatively few confirmed air dates within them. If there's a visible contestant name or puzzle in those Wheels, particularly season 2, I would love to know so we can help patch up some holes in our records for the compendium.
This has already been a lot of useful information, however, and we are all thankful for your help in this process. No matter how big or small the role, you helped make this process happen. It's always great to find out more information, get a fuller picture of when stuff aired, and understand what happened that we don't know about. Even if it's mostly a J! project, we still appreciate all the help with the little Wheel tidbits located within.
Thank you again for doing your part to help.

I'm leaning towards the timing of it as 1/31/89 so I'm confused.
