A friend of mine sent me data from the Library of Congress on what aired for the Daytime version on January 30 and June 30, 1989. A woman by the name of Josie shared the data. Here's what she revealed:
January 30, 1989: Wheel of Fortune (Show #3578)
Tape Date: Unable to determine
June 30, 1989: Wheel of Fortune (Show #3686)
Tape Date: May 22, 1989
There you have it, folks. 3,686 episodes aired from January 3, 1975 to June 30, 1989. And 94 times, there were postponements or reruns of past shows.
So apparently, WOF knew in advance that they would preempted on Friday June 9 for the French Open, unlike Classic Concentration. Also confirmed is the number of postponements and reruns which occurred over the course of its 15 years and six months during its original run on NBC.
I guess this means Stephen Burrows' episode (in which he was the first player to buy all five vowels in succession, and still not solve the puzzle) was actually taped earlier than June.
