I didn't talk about this until now, but I was at the Wheel of Fortune Live show yesterday in Red Bank, New Jersey. I have decided to post a report about it. Here is what happened:
A few minutes after the scheduled start time of 8:00 PM Eastern, the opening montage played, which included clips of, but not limited to, Vanna White's first episode as permanent hostess, Matt DeSanto solving THE LONE RANGER with just the E in LONE, Emil de Leon solving NEW BABY BUGGY with just the N and the E, and James Brown solving GOPHER with only the E and the R.
After that, Dave Styles, the announcer came out. He had the audience promise not to shout out the answers to any puzzles or suggest any letters. He also would host the audition Toss-Up puzzles. After the first three audition Toss-Up puzzles, we were introduced to Mark L. Wahlberg and Rae Williams, who once again substituted for Kalpana Pot.
The first game started. I don't remember much of that game, but the winner of that game won 4,950 points.
In the second game, one of the contestants won the Dinner and a Movie gift tag in Round 1 (when the contestant landed on it, Mark asked if she wanted him to explain it. She said yes, and Mark said, "It's dinner...and a movie"). This same contestant won with 5,000 points.
After the first and second games, Dave asked trivia questions about the show. Dan Colaneri correctly answered that the Wheel on the real show weighs 2,400 pounds. He then mentioned that he had been on the show in 2014 (though I didn't know at the time that it was him).
In the third game, one of the contestants claimed the Wild Card in Round 1. I also remember that a contestant in Round 3 of that game lost the prize wedge (a trip to Hawaii) to a Bankrupt. The winner of that game won with 6,000 points. After that game, a 15-minute intermission was held.
After the intermission, they played the wedge game to determine which colored wristband would win the keychain (yellow won).
The championship game was what I thought was the most interesting of the four games I saw. That game had a Crossword in Round 1. In that round, the contestant with the Wild Card lost it to Bankrupt. When the Red contestant attempted to solve, Mark gave him the warning about only saying what was on the board. He solved it, but before the last word, he added the word AND. I seemed to be one of the only few people who noticed and there was a pause for some seconds before Mark said that they would have to rule his solve incorrect because he added the word AND. The Yellow contestant then solved it correctly. In Round 2, the Yellow contestant had 13,700 points, but lost her turn, IIRC, by calling an incorrect letter. Eventually, control made it back to her and she solved the puzzle. She ended up winning the game with 23,300 points.
She was unable to solve the Bonus Round puzzle (she did not guess anything during the ten seconds; she tried to call R and E as her letters and was embarrassed, so Mark gave her a hug). Had she solved the puzzle, she would have won $1,500.
All in all, I had a fun time and I am also going to the Stamford show on Saturday. If anyone has any questions, I will try to answer them (though I can't answer anything about the puzzles).
