Secret Santa II (Day 5)

Maggie and our friends at Disney (Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto) are bummed that Secret Santa's ending. But when Maggie mentions that it's the last night for contestants to win cash and prizes, Minnie gets excited. And when Maggie says us home viewers can win what the players earn, Mickey calls us "the best Secret Santas ever."

Later, the mice introduce the hosts and Donald rushes them and Goofy onto the stage (Pat: "I'm coming, Donald!"), after which Pat calls him "quite a nag." Pluto's between the contestants at the yellow and blue podiums. Pat's "kinda sad" that tonight's "our last night of Disney Secret Santa."

I'm not typically one to obsess over perfect bonus round weeks, but that is definitely one of the most painful ways to go 4-1. He blew it, but I get why he got stuck on YOURSELVES - YOURSELF is a more common reflexive pronoun than OURSELF. I have complained before about how Phrases are starting to become "what word can we pair together with a pronoun clause", but I didn't expect this to happen in WAYD? I guess semantically, because the contestant is the YOU in What Are You Doing?, the pronoun can't directly be second person (unless there's a prepositional clause, like CHATTING WITH YOU, or something possessive, like BORROWING YOUR JACKET). That's one weird trick an aspiring contestant to take from this, something different than complaining that his guess didn't fit the board.

Otherwise, aside from Round 1, it was a pretty tame evening. Shame the week was going so well to end on something just alright.

A very nice main game tonight thanks to Michael picking up the trip wedge and the MDW and him and Paul neck and neck heading into the last segment.

I was surprised Michael decided to fill in the last two letters of the puzzle in round 2, definitely a risk with the MDW in hand but thankfully it worked out.

The bonus round was definitely a downer. He had all that help to start but couldn't figure out the second word. At least he didn't have the million wedge.

Well, that wraps another Secret Santa. This week's bonus rounds other than tonight at least made up for last week.

Michael did a nice job in the front game, even though the expensive Italy tour tightened the match between himself and Paul. I’m just happy Hetal solved a Toss-Up.

And then came the BR (which I solved with RSTLNE).

Sigh… I had a feeling we wouldn’t go 5-0, but to miss out on that result because of one lousy extra letter was painful. At least Michael didn’t lose the super big one, but still… that hurt. 😔

Aside from that ending, this week was pretty good. It would’ve been even better if it was the exact opposite of last week…

It was a good game between Paul and Michael. Glad to see we had a million dollar bonus round. After Paul took the lead on Michael after the prize puzzle round I was hoping Michael would come back. He did.

Round 3 and TTU 3 reminded me of some moments. Round 3 was featured in the first ever Triple Toss Up, and TTU 3 was a big moment.

Well rats, we failed to clinch a perfect bonus round week. I blanked on that puzzle somehow. After hearing him say YOURSELVES I really don’t know how OURSELVES didn’t come into my head

Actually 2005 was when they started having daily Trip Puzzles. And the values weren’t even gamebreaking back then (the most expensive I’ve seen pre-MDW was something just short of ten grand). It only started to get more and more expensive starting around 2010 or something like that.

Now Michael did a great job fending off an overpowered gimmick and bringing us another MDBR, but there was some untapped potential.

R2: I had a feeling Paul would dud out late (the same would go for Hetal the next round).

BR: I’ll admit that I needed the additional letters to solve it, but dang. That really is the most baffling loss ever. My heart even sank when Michael couldn’t change gears in time.

This reminded me of an episode I covered yesterday (the bonus puzzle was ARE YOU AWAKE? and the winner missed the second word saying WE). I blame both instances on nerves.

And I could see why mechamind described the envelope as “small”. We were so used to a $25K jump between the smallest and next-to-highest amounts on the wheel. So much so, that even I don’t count $45K pickups as significant.

Michael botched a letter on the bottom word in the Bonus Round while trying to solve it. The "Perfect Bonus Round Week" mission has failed after 4 bonus round wins this week. (Bobbymgsk said "we are Denied Perfection".)
