"Big increase": Literally the ABC owned and operated stations paid more money to keep the shows than they paid last time. That's literally it.

It's very likely that had ABC O&Os not paid more money that the shows would have gone to CBS/FOX/NBC O&Os in the cities where those groups overlap (NYC/LA/Chicago/etc) and to other stations in markets where those networks don't have a presence. (Example: There's an ABC O&O in Raleigh NC)
And for cities like Orlando and Seattle that have, say, a FOX O&O but the show airs on another station? The existing contracts would remain in force but the FOX O&O would have gotten them when it runs out. Same for CBS having an O&O in Denver, etc etc etc)

ABC paid Sony a significant amount of money, and a bigger amount than before, to make sure that didn't happen.

That's great news. I wanted to post this for some time but never got around to it. But I'm happy the new deal will take Wheel to its' 45th season. ABC is the perfect station to carry Wheel especially for this stalwart New York Wheel Watcher.
