Tape Date: 3/20/2023
Air Dates: 5/8-12/2023, no AG.
Of course, things that might be considered spoilers ahead.
I arrived at SPE at around 9:40 AM for reasons that will remain unwritten. Afterwards, I met up with wheellover65 , who had to be a contestant guest that day to get in, jjman920 , and trisspinner . There were a couple other fairly notable people there, including Randy West, but I honestly wasn't paying much attention in line this time. Part of that might be fatigue; today took me to the 17th episode I've seen in person this season. I also forgot my vaccination card back in my apartment, so I had to search through my phone to see if I snapped a photo of it. So, in lieu of that, here's a meme color guide for what your wristband color means!
Silver: You're a special guest of production, which can range from wheellover65 winning a local raffle to see a VIP taping of the show to 15 students and their teacher from Oakwood taking notes on how to make their own gameshow.
Green: You're a guest of one of the contestants. You had to take a COVID test the day before, and if your contestant makes it to the bonus round, you get to get on stage.
Blue: You're a guest of the contestants - however, due to COVID procedures, only two unmasked guests can accompany a contestant.
White: You got tickets through Eventbrite. Unfortunately for the earlier taping, production put on a regular yellow wristband inverted, but you get $25 a taping.
Yellow: Basic tier.
As we finally enter Studio 11, JJ and Tris chat about what the set will look like. I peek through the doors... and although it's the basic set, the center screen reads DONOVAN'S DAY with the TEACHER'S WEEK trilons, with a background that looks like a map, and an apple with the WOF logo on top of a book whose spine reads "100+ FEET OF ROAD TAPE".
This was a Make-a-Wish wish made true. Donovan was given a chance to play a game with his family. He got a "practice" game with a representative from Make-a-Wish and an "actual" game featuring Pat Sajak and Vanna White. It was clear that Donovan was more interested in swooshing the wheel around than playing the game; quite frankly, I don't blame him.
The practice and real games had some... interesting categories. I've notated them below. During the "real" game, Mrs. Fletcher explained that Donovan had been diagnosed with ALL, and that they were living their best life. There were two square LEGO gift tags, two circular Atlas gift tags, and two boxes that said SURPRISE, but acted more like the gift boxes from Wheel 2000. Although the original plan seemed to be Donovan competiting against his parents, that quickly devolved into Pat whispering letters into Donovan's ear and cracking jokes (you don't want to impale yourself on the wheel! i've never helped a contestant before, and now i'm going to jail!)
Donovan "landed" on both surprise boxes (more like Pat moved the wheel on those wedges). One had a Wheel of Fortune t-shirt, and the other had Pat and Vanna Funko Pops. Donovan's four-year-old brother ended up running and tripping on the stairs next to Pat twice before Vanna picked him up to touch the puzzleboard. Although a score was tallied, the counters eventually gave up and made every consonant $500. Before spinning the Bonus Round wheel, Pat announced that Donovan would recieve the LEGOs and atlas without landing on them in the maingame.
Donovan solved the bonus round with just RSTLNE; production quickly mashed FGHI to reveal the solution. Inside the bonus round envelope was a trip to Disneyland!
I hope footage of that surfaces. It was hectic, but a fun change of pace from adults playing a "serious" game for thousands of dolars. I'm glad Donovan's wish came true.
After that minature game, things turned to a normal taping, with Jim coming out and saying his corny jokes, Lee talking about THE JEFFERSONS LIVE ON PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE, and people over the age of two using the Toss-Up buzzer correctly. Well...
I know this isn't in-depth as the other two taping reports. I am drained from wooing and clapping today, and I'm planning on coming back tomorrow. Feel free to leave any questions regarding everything except the players. Else, good night.

PRACTICE GAME:
TU1: GREEN (Color)
TU2: PETE THE CAT (Character)
R1: MOANA (Movie Title) - technically they never revealed this, and Tris pointed out that the M and no T could mean it's MULAN, but I doubt it.
"REAL" GAME:
TU1: MAPS (Things You Like)
TU2: ENCANTO (Things You Like)
R1: MOMMY AND DADDY (People You Like)
BR: DONOVAN (Name)

except that all of these contestants were Fan Favorites. I'm not going to spoil the matchups, because the announcement of one made me go "holy crap they're doing that", but I've listed the contestants below by original air date, along with a link to the BAV recap. You can figure out why people were invited on your own.
Caitlin Burk - 11/5/10
Emil deLeon - 3/19/14
Melinda Gardner - 4/4/17
Blair Davis - 10/14/19
Jessie Rebhan - 2/6/20
Christian Dixie - 3/17/20
Diana Hawkins - 12/15/20
Julia Fry - 4/21/21
Dr. Reka Barton - 10/26/21
Tanino Privitera - 9/21/22
John Salvetti - 11/9/22
Kellen Franklin - 11/25/22
Ricky Gilbert - 12/20/22
UNAIRED - 3/21/23
UNAIRED - 4/11/23
If you look at the list above, two episodes haven't aired yet. I'm not revealing who comes back, but judging from the types of people they invited, I'm pretty sure you can figure it out if you watch those episodes. They did show clips from over half of the contestants' original appearances during the intrerviews, but not all.
Otherwise, it was the standard set with the Bloomin' Onion, with the only setpiece being the ceramic dalmatian placed in a different spot every day, similar to what they did with the apple during one of the Teacher's Weeks. Standard layout, standard puzzle rotation, standard themed puzzles about a second time, etc. It wasn't formally announced until the end of the Tuesday episode, but the Prize Puzzle trip was the same cruise. Apparently the center graphic is the S27 logo with the words alternating between WHEEL OF FORTUNE and FAN FAVORITES?
I don't really know what else to say besides five games of wheel were played with returning players without going too far into spoiler territory. The show is a well-oiled machine, so it's much easier to point out what went wrong than what went right. So:
- The new puzzleboard still isn't glitchless. There were a couple of times where sections of the screen would flash brighter momentarily.
- During the Wednesday's Speed-Up, someone from the contestants' guest area shouted out part of an answer. That led to a stopdown, Pat confirming he heard right from the sound guys, and a replacement puzzle. Tris later noted that because of the Make-a-Wish shenanigans at the top of the first taping session, Jim never went through the full spiel, so technically we were never told to not blurt out the answers. Still, Jim made absolute sure he told the second session not to yell.
(also, if someone at the start of Season 41 sees a R4 Living Things that fits LONGHORN CATTLE, please no-letter it. that would be awesome.)
- Originally, Friday's winner was offered the Bonus Round choice of Living Things, Phrase, ... and a second Phrase. It took a solid 5-10 minutes to figure out what the intended categories were.
