As you know, the Jackpot featured on Big Money week is the third type of Jackpot ever featured on the show. Which one do you like the most?
The first Jackpot was featured on the daytime version from 1986-87. This started at $1,000 and went up $1,000 each day until it was won. After it was won, it reset to $1,000.
It was similar to a Prize Wedge.
The largest Jackpot won here was $22,000.
This was the only cash ever offered on the daytime show before they adopted the nighttime play-for-cash format when they moved to CBS in 1989.
I know this iteration of the Jackpot was added to differentiate the two versions. They got rid of this Jackpot after the nighttime show introduced the play-for-cash format.
I think this was a nice Jackpot. This wouldn't work on the nighttime show since they tape out-of-order.
The second version of the Jackpot, the one we all know, is the 1996-2013 version.
This was introduced on September 16, 1996 (the same day the single-template system was introduced, not at the start of Season 14) and used until the end of Season 30 on June 14, 2013.
The Jackpot Round was in Round 3 when it debuted but moved to Round 2 for special shows from May 1-12 2000, then moved permanently to Round 2 at the start of Season 18, and then moved to Round 1 at the start of Season 27.
The top dollar value for the Jackpot Round was $3,500 (even during the May 2000 shows, they had the $3,500 for Round 2) but then they moved the Jackpot to Round 1, the top dollar was $2,500.
This wedge was placed on the orange $300 when it was introduced, then moved to the green $500 in Season 16, and then moved to the red $300 in Season 26 ($700 in Season 30).
This Jackpot started at $5,000 and went up each spin.
This wedge had several designs. My favorite is final design which reused the Big Money Wedge. I also liked the Season 23 design as well (this design was also used in early Season 24 episodes as well), and the late Season 14 design as well. Which design was your favorite?
Starting in Season 24, the Jackpot wedge began awarding $500 per consonant, plus $500 toward the Jackpot. (I remember in Seasons 26-29, there was a triple-$500 problem, but they fixed that in Season 30 for its final season)
To win the Jackpot, you had to land on it, call a correct letter, and solve the puzzle IMMEDIATELY with no buying vowels in-between.
If a player won the Jackpot, fireworks would explode across the screen.
Starting in February 1997 until the end of Friday Finals, the Jackpot would start at $10,000 instead of $5,000. (Had they kept it through the WWE and NFL Weeks in Seasons 40-41, would they have started the Jackpot at $10,000 for the Friday Finals??)
The first win was at it's base $5,000 value and the only known time it was won at the $5,000 base value on September 26, 1996.
The final win was on June 10, 2013 at $7,600. (I remember this episode because it was one of the last 6 Season 30 episodes that GSN aired)
The largest known win was $17,450 on September 9, 2002.
The largest known (but not claimed) Jackpot was $23,450 on September 19, 1997 on a Friday Finals episode because of it starting at $10,000.
In Season 31 as you all know, the Jackpot was retired and replaced with Express. I remember there were more Jackpot wins in Seasons 29 and 30, and that's why it was retired.
This is my most missed gameplay element of the show. But I do think Express is even better than the Jackpot!
germanname1990 thought Express should've replaced the Mystery Round instead of the Jackpot Round. But I do think the reason why they replaced the Jackpot instead of Mystery however is because Pat did say the Mystery Wedge is his favorite wedge.
The third version of the Jackpot, which is being used for this week's Big Money week. I know MarioGS already explained it, but I'll explain it here as well.
This starts at $8,000 (in honor of show S-8000) and goes up every spin, just like the 1996-2013 version. Only spins from Rounds 1-3 count. (Spins in rounds 4+ and Final Spins don't count towards the Jackpot)
You win the Jackpot if you win the Bonus Round (in additon to whatever is in the Bonus Envelope, similar to XL, and the Expedition Cruise week from earlier this season)
In addition, there is a Double Jackpot Wedge, replacing the Prize Wedge for this week. They are placed on both purple $500's. Despite both being under purple $500's, they award $1,000 per consonant instead of $500! Another "$1,000" wedge (still can't get a regular non-TDV 4-digit space). Should a player take the Double Jackpot Wedge to the Bonus Round, the Jackpot is doubled.
Last night's Jackpot was $21,600 and the player had the Double Jackpot Wedge, but it was not won. We will see what happens later this week.
So, what do you think? Which Jackpot was your favorite? I liked all of them, but I think the new Jackpot is even better than the 1996-2013 version!

Due to this, the Bonus Round puzzles got harder this week.
