It's not any great wonder why Double Play did not last long under the gameplay rules that accompanied it. There were a couple of fatal flaws.
First, it was something that the player had to elect to use, but there was no clear strategy as to when it should best be used.
Second, it wasn't even a reward given the cost - obtaining the token costs a consonant call that could have earned 1x DV. Then, on successful use of the token, you would get rewarded 2x DV. On average, that's a wash. Around half the time, the DV for the second spin would be worse than the average DV for the first spin, unless you banked the token until late game.
I propose these fixes to make Double Play more exciting for fantasy play:
1. Double Play is no longer an obtainable token, but an instant-use thing. If you land on Double Play and call a correct consonant, you either spin again or forfeit the Double Play. Double Play is still removed from play when hit/used.
2. Double the DV landed on for the second spin is immediately rewarded for each consonant instance that was called on the Double Play. This introduces some new strategy regarding when to call sure/high frequency consonants. 3. Double the DV landed on for the second spin is also awarded for each consonant instance called for the second spin. 4. Penalties and wedges with no face value on the second spin void the Double Play.
Further, this opens up the possibility of Double Double Plays. Put another Double Play on the wheel (or keep the original one out there), and let them stack!

That actually sounds like a great idea of fixing the failed token from Season 13.

I feel like a simpler fix for your second point would be to treat it like a prize in the 80s. Land on it, immediately pick it up, then call a letter for the dollar amount under it.

It's a good thought, though it removes the tension of spinning for the amount to double. Also, unless running the game entirely using pickup-then-call rules, it may be confusing to have an exception to the call-then-pickup rule.

I have now made my Double Play tokens. I made a set of three so that I can experiment with having multiple in play and having the multipliers stack if hit successively. Credit to wheelgenius as I created these from his prior Double Play artwork. But because I can't just leave well enough alone, I had to take it a step further. Introducing the fantasy "Triple Play" token: Artwork based on wheelgenius's Double Play artwork. This can be used in conjunction with the above rules, including stacking, to add yet more excitement and the potential for even higher scores. It works just like Double Play, except, as you may have guessed, it triples dollar values spun. I made two triples, so in theory if all five tokens are used, the multiplier could reach x72. The chances of that happening are pretty slim, though (1:66355.2 by my napkin math). Probably x12 (2 doubles and a triple with 1:2304 odds) is a more realistic cap. Making these also caused me to realize that there are two different sizes of the glittery green Free Spin - there is a smaller one that is used on the wheel when it is first introduced as a wheel token rather than a wedge. At some point along the way, it got about 25% bigger. At any rate, now that my wheel is armed with these new Season 13 gameplay elements, I can keep hunting prize wedges from that season.

It’s so fancy with fantasy and incredible! Great work with “Double Play” and “Triple Play” tokens you’ve done!
