That’s great news but surprising too.

Well this came out of nowhere. I'm guessing the network wasn't able to ink a deal with Ryan in time for production.

^ That or ABC saw how much their ratings spiked on Pat's "last" day and offered him an unspeakable amount of money to do one more season.

Certainly a surprise to see Pat will host the next season of CWOF. I could see it being either they couldn't come to an agreement with Ryan in time or they offered Pat big money to come back thinking having him host would bring big ratings from those looking to see him host one more time.
It will be very interesting having two different hosts for two versions of the show for the first time since the final few years of the daytime show after Pat stopped hosting.

lol When my friend came over tonight he blurted out "Pat Sajak is pulling a Tom Brady!"
Indeed very surprising.

Apparently this has already been locked in for months, and they just never officially announced it. It *was* odd that they weren't specifically mentioning Ryan or any host besides Vanna, but I guess they didn't want to take away from the "retirement" hype and the ratings bump that came with it. I'm honestly not thrilled with this news, as I haven't been a fan of Pat's hosting in recent years and feel like the show needs a fresh start, but it is what it is. At least with Ryan hosting the daily version, the new set, and the overall reinvigorated feel we've been seeing under Bellamie Blackstone, this won't be too much of a detriment.

TMZ is reporting that Pat was contractually obligated to host a Season 5 and this was already known from the start; Ryan will host Season 6 if it gets renewed again. www.tmz.com/2024/07/12/pat-sajak-celebrity-wheel-of-fortune-host-not-unretiring-planned/If this is true, it's very odd that there was no mention of this at all until this week. Granted, CWOF wasn't renewed until May, well after S41 and CWOF S4 finished taping. ABC probably wants to cash in on giving Pat a "FINAL final sendoff". Hopefully it comes with a primetime special, or at least a better finale than Season 4's, not to mention Wheel's 50th anniversary is coming up. It's kind of annoying how ABC and Sony consider the two versions completely different programs in almost all regards, unlike say, TPIR/TPIR at Night or J!/J! Masters. To the general public and the fandom, Wheel is Wheel.

It's kind of annoying how ABC and Sony consider the two versions completely different programs in almost all regards, unlike say, TPIR/TPIR at Night or J!/J! Masters. To the general public and the fandom, Wheel is Wheel. The contractual obligation does make sense, if it's indeed the case. It's surprising there was no mention of Pat hosting it when season 5 was announced, but I guess since it was close to Pat's final syndicated episode ABC didn't want to take away from that, or perhaps there was some possibility of Pat getting out of the obligation. It would be great if they did a primetime special dedicated to Wheel for Pat's "FINAL final sendoff" and the franchise's 50th anniversary at some point during season 5. The two versions are treated differently because they are different versions. The daily show is syndicated, CWOF is network primetime. Masters and Celebrity J! are different from the daily version also, and with TPIR and TPIR at Night the difference is they are both network shows.

Wanna know what I think would be really cool? If maybe one day they had Ryan play as a contestant. And then maybe, for the final episode, they could have an official passing of the torch, with Ryan hosting, and Pat playing as a contestant.
