This historic BR is a good reminder of both recent trends in the past few years on how the producers set up losses most of the time, even on an overall tame puzzle: - Most often you need to go just beyond the common CDMPH consonants - B & F particularly in the early going this season. To an extent this is true for G depending on the category, too.
- Waste letters are such a key issue. If a part like "SOME HELP" is obvious, it's more likely than not those letters are not going to be elsewhere in the puzzle She had the WC and still wasted all three consonants I just mentioned, and this time C was also a dud. (O was actually key, but it wasn't going to get picked this time because...)
- Picking WAYD then wasting GI, along with often trap article "A"s, are an extension of the above issue.
- Any "starting with a vowel" word is naturally tougher, we've seen this play out again and again.
If more to-be contestants could study these trends just a bit, we could have avoided what happened today. |

Man, that was rough. She looked like she was trying really hard not to cry after the envelope reveal, and I can't really say that I blame her. It's one thing if there are tons of blanks and there was no way you were going to solve the puzzle, but that has to sting so much more when it was a totally solvable puzzle like this one was.

I liked the intro with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman at the beginning, I thought it was pretty well done. The set this week is nice also, I like the color scheme and the added posters makes the area behind the contestants a little fuller looking. Wow, for the incredibly bad luck Deb had with the wheel, she ended up with a great 3rd place score! Great scores for all three! I forgot to mention this last week but I like that they're making the Prize Puzzle trips relate to the puzzle again. Ugh, that was just an agonizing loss. I really thought she had it! If only she went O instead of I for the vowel, or better yet called the F. I felt so bad for Vivian, she looked like she was going to cry. Six episodes into Ryan's tenure and this happens  |

Oy, and you thought Friday's choke was bad?
This was also arguably the easiest MDBR since LOUD LAUGHTER and definitely a cakewalk compared to something like a BAKED ZUCCHINI or OCEAN KAYAKING. Like Wayo somewhat eluded to, this was yet ANOTHER case of "choose all the common non-RSTLNE letters except the ones in the puzzle". I'm not even sure calling an O on its own gets this one given how it played out, but it is a MUCH better call than I. You probably have to spoonfeed that AND F to have any hope for a win, especially considering she muddled off ANSWERING and LOOKING AROUND for the gerund. We're 1 for 6 so far in the BR and it's largely incidents like this sort that have attributed to it, regardless of how much they eased up for premiere week.
This BR easily gets taken down ~5 years ago, but no dice in 2024. If this is the type of puzzle we're blowing an easy million on, I have sincere doubts we ever give it away again.
Loss and negativity aside, I have to give props to Ryan on how he handled this. For knowing full well that the MD was in play, he remained extremely calm while delivering the right amount of suspense in the moment and comfort towards the contestant. I didn't get the chance to comment last week, but he's been knocking it out of the park so far, and today was probably his best show so far. He's VERY good with the players and genuinely roots for them to do well while bringing out the best in them.

That was a quick cutback on the first spin. I think there was also a quick one on Deb’s first spin
Maingame was pretty good (episode was definitely not after the BR). I feel bad for Deb not being able to light up letters with all these penalties but I’m glad she was able to make progress and get a good total thanks to the Triple Toss Ups and her speed up solve
Oh man that really sucks. Only the second week as host and already a heartbreaker like this happens. I couldn’t get OFFERING either. I also didn’t think the last word was gonna be HELP but it was, I couldn’t think of anything else.

15 minutes in,(approximately,this is not DVR timed but live. I just converted it to minutes to make it simpler depending on the area) it was obviously a null zone given that he was saying 'I feel sorry for you' like it happened 5 other times. at the beginning of the round. I saw the ads too, I actually believe them but keep in mind my area does not usually play ads (with exceptions of the show right before it,but this time it was during the graveyard/late fringe) so I was not sure what to expect. granted looking back even the ad showed him opening it sloppy and down. I remember thinking that but not knowing how to interpret because he is a new host. I am pretty sure they are talking about breaking it by accident from shock. (like dropping something or smashing something) not actively running around the room smashing stuff in a rage. granted I will address that the situation we are talking about would be a slightly lower situation of the perfect bid scenario from price is right. they also had an issue with a newer host reaction to a winning. granted I will mention the partial reason for that was cheating fears happening so close to him being hired. (I might not be explaining this best,I recommend switching if you wanna know more) anyway I guess "rookie host" did not make it to the endzone. (I am hoping I got that sports thing correct) I miss the portion of the bonus round but as I mentioned even the ad shows a slow open. how did he know someone got the million dollars before he open the envelope. that was never allowed before to the best of my knowledge. other than that scenario where Pat actually checked envelope by mistake it is folded for a reason. I got around to watching it it sounds like he wanted to be the assisted audio announcer. 'is she or is she not.' I am not even sure how he screwed this considering he was mostly fine previously with bonus rounds. his comforting began fine but then he began to ruin it by talking about how excited he was to pick the envelope. come on you host American Idol, you know what to do. you would think he was the one who was competing for 1 million. |
