First Bob Goen episode - aired on 7/17/1989
Look at this studio, filled with incredibly cheap prizes! Over $41,000 waiting to be won, but it ain't happening, because this is... WHEEL! OF! CHEAPNESS!
Let's meet our players (and forgive any misspellings of names, I call them as I hear them):
Fay Sinclair: an accountant from San Diego and graduate of SD State (just like Bob!)
Rick DePiro: a keyboard player from Buffalo - former organist for the Cleveland Indians!
Lou Cypher: (female) real estate company director of communications from Columbus
ROUND 1:
$500 is the top dollar value for the first two rounds, but watch out for that pink space, "$50", because it is extremely cheap and you'll never have enough money to buy a vowel. We play for cash, and here's the first puzzle:
_ _ _ / _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
THING
Fay's first spin hits a lowly $75 - not an auspicious beginning. Her second one does too, but no money comes of it. Rick BANKRUPTs right away to lose his turn, so we go to Lou. She puts up an S, then passes it on back to Fay with a dud, and after a little work, it goes on down to Rick. He sells us out of consonants, and we have:
B _ G / _ F
P E _ N _ T S
THING
which he solves as BAG OF PEANUTS for a whopping $300.
Duds: R (Fay), L (Lou), J (Fay)
Bankrupt: Rick (loss of turn)
Fay: bagel
Rick: $300
Lou: donut and the hole thereof
ROUND 2:
Still using the same wheel, but we add a 2-night trip to Lake Tahoe valued at $916.
_ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _
_ / _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _
PHRASE
Rick will start us off here by collecting a FREE SPIN. Right after that, he hits a triple T... on $50. He follows that a couple spins later with a triple W... again on $50, which Bob remarks on. He buys an A, which Bob notes are just $200 instead of $250 - this would eventually shrink to $100 later in the run. A Lose a Turn means we go to Lou (Rick elects to hold his Free Spin), and she puts up several letters (though is unable to get the trip) before...
_ _ S T / W H A T
_ / A L W A Y S
W A N T _ D
PHRASE
solving JUST WHAT I ALWAYS WANTED for $750.
Lose a Turn: Rick
Fay: zip-a-dee-doo-dah
Rick: $300 + Free Spin
Lou: $750
ROUND 3:
The wheel gets an upgrade - $1,000 is the top dollar now, with a minimum of $100. We also have a Carson's of High Point sofa worth $1,350 and a jewelry gift certificate worth $1,450. Meanwhile, we have a new category:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ / _ _
_ _ / _ _ _ _ _
PERSON/
FICTIONAL
CHARACTER
Lou will kick things off here. Her second spin hits the big money, and she finds the double S in the puzzle. She finds it again, but just a single L this time. But then, horror of horrors, she repeats the E that she previously called. Fay then finds the $1,000 spot on HER second spin, but there are no H's. It's all Rick from here, including his pickup of the JEWEL prize and the board shows:
L E O N A R D
N _ M O Y / A S
M R / S P O _ _
PERSON/
FICTIONAL
CHARACTER
and he fills it in to say LEONARD NIMOY AS MR SPOCK for $600 cash and the prize!
Sole Dud: H (Fay)
DQ: Lou's repeated E
Fay: gooseegg alert
Rick: $2,350 cash and jewelry + Free Spin
Lou: $750
ROUND 4 (partial speedup):
Minor tweaks to the wheel: $1,250 and $750 added, and some Lloyd Flanders wicker furniture worth $1,850. Meanwhile, look who's here to make his presence known - it's Pat! He drops by to wish Bob success, and once we finish our touching moment, Vanna sets us up with the following:
_ _ _ _ / _ _
_ _ _ _ _
PHRASE
Fay gets another chance to start a round and get some cash, but $100 won't be adding up to much anytime soon. She can't get anything for $600, so Rick gets it again. He duds an R (but oddly enough, is not asked to use his Free Spin), so Lou will...
T _ _ T / _ _
_ _ _ _ _
PHRASE
(DING DING, DING DING) watch Bob spin and hit $150. This puzzle goes around and around until...
T _ S T / _ F
W _ L L S
PHRASE
Lou finds the last consonant (the beeps don't sound though) and solves TEST OF WILLS for $450.
Duds (pre-speedup): H (Fay), R (Rick)
Duds (post-speedup): N (Lou), P (Rick), M (Fay)
Fay: GOOSEEGG'D
Rick: $2,350 cash and jewelry (Free Spin goes unused)
Lou: $1,200 cash
Rick will go on to the Bonus Round!
BONUS ROUND:
Rick will play for $5,000 cash as his bonus prize (and that's not a typo, it's 5 not 25 on the daytime - told you it was cheap). Dim the lights!
