Fifth Goen Episode - Original Airdate 7/21/1989
Over $41,000 will NOT be given away today, or any other day, here on WHEEL! OF! CHEAPNESS!
We retired an undefeated champion on the last program, so let's meet our three new players
(as usual, pardon the spelling):
Biff Romay, a retired Coast Guard officer from Mobile, Alabama (whose name has Bob just plain tickled)
Jon Gelbert, a sportswriter from New York City
Carol Snyder, a business teacher from Indianapolis
ROUND 1:
$500 is the top dollar value for the first two rounds. We're concluding our first week of playing for cash and our first puzzle reads as follows:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ / _
_ _ _ _ _
PHRASE
Biff gets the first spin by way of winning the number draw, and the wheel will come to rest on BANKRUPT, so he loses his turn. We go to Jon who proceeds to dud an R on the lowly $50. Carol, though, will cash in on the top dollar of $500 with an N and give it right back to BANKRUPT (should've bought some vowels). Biff tries again, and he puts up a few letters before the bad luck Bankrupt strikes him for $100. Jon emulates his last turn by calling a bad H. Can Carol turn us around? Not in a big way, because she keeps hitting $50, but she finds good letters and:
S T _ K I N G / _
C L _ I _
PHRASE
misses a word with STAKING CLAIM. Biff puts up a $100 M and only vowels are left:
S T _ K I N G / _
C L _ I M
PHRASE
and he BLOWS IT with STRIKING A CLAIM. Jon has no money, so he solves STAKING A CLAIM for a $200 house minimum.
Duds: R (Jon), H (Jon)
Bankrupt: Biff x2 (loss of turn, then $100), Carol ($500)
DQ: blown solves by Carol AND Biff
Biff: blew $100
Jon: $200
Carol: blew $325
ROUND 2:
Let's hope things get better as we go along. Till then, we put a porcelain pot worth $550 on the wheel.

SAME NAME
Jon solved the last round and he has control of this one, starting with a $200 T and then handing off his turn with a bad R. Carol puts up a pair of $300 N's before passing it on again. Biff must be onto something early, calling for a $50 V, but his call of "one more time" on his third spin leads him to LOSE A TURN. Jon has it back and his second spin hits FREE SPIN, but when he duds a B, he's not asked to use it. Carol buys two pairs of vowels (A's and E's) before guessing a bad Y. Biff can't find a D, so Jon gets the pair of G's on $125 and there's only vowels left:
E G G / &
V A N N A
W H _ T E
SAME NAME
He reads off EGG & VANNA WHITE for $550 more!
Duds: R (Jon), S (Carol), B (Jon - Free Spin not asked for), Y (Carol), D (Biff)
Lose a Turn: Biff
Biff: unskilled and unlucky
Jon: $750 + Free Spin
Carol: vowel shopper and dud artist
ROUND 3:
We bump the wheel up to a maximum of $1,000, the ART is still out there, and we add a gigantic cell phone (it is 1989 after all) valued at $1,495.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
THINGS
Carol will try to get some redemption this round; she just misses the phone for $100 but duds an N. Biff puts up $600 worth of S's before deciding to check twice for the N. On his third spin, Jon will pick up the PHONE and put it in his bank. Unfortunately, on his next spin, it and $550 are going bye-bye BANKRUPT, but not his turn because he will cash in his Free Spin. That's a great decision, because his very next rotation of the wheel hits the big $1,000 for a pair of L's! After purchasing some vowels, he just slides by Lose a Turn, but there are no D's. Nor are there any G's for Carol, but there is a C and two B's so Biff runs us out of consonants:
C O M B _ S T I B L E
M A T E R I A L S
THINGS
Hundred-dollar bills are COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS, and Biff just won ten of them - $1,000! He's got the lead now.
Duds: N (Carol), D (Jon), G (Carol)
Bankrupt: Jon ($550 and the PHONE - Free Spin used)
DQ: Biff's repeated N
Biff: $1,000
Jon: $750
Carol: gooseegg alert
ROUND 4 (FULL SPEEDUP):
$1,250 and $750 added to the wheel, the pot is still there, but our time has flown on out the window! Bob will spin before we even see the puzzle, and all consonants will be worth $300 in this speedup round.

_ _ _ _ _
OCCUPATION
Biff will start the rotation but can't start with a D. We get a triple fail his next turn, but then it gets back to Carol, who puts up an L and solves:
T R _ _ _ L
_ _ _ N T
OCCUPATION
She won't have enough money to book a trip with her TRAVEL AGENT, but $900 is good for second place.
Duds: D (Biff), S (Biff), M (Jon), C (Carol), P (Jon)
Biff: $1,000 cash
Jon: $750 cash
Carol: $900 cash
Biff is our new champion, and he'll take a trip to Bonusland!
BONUS ROUND:
Biff wants to play for the $5,000 cash today. Dim the lights!

Not much help, and not much guessing on his part, so he won't come up with HAY FEVER. A paltry $1,000 cash for him, but he'll be returning to try again next week!
