Daytime Wheel of Fortune - Original Airdate 5/23/91
We're near the end of the daytime run, but at least we're back on NBC with a little cash and a lot of prizes offered on WHEEL! OF! SLIGHTLY LESS CHEAPNESS!
Let's meet our players for the day, including the returning champion:
Sherri Romano, a one-day champion with $3,150 to her name
Joyce McWaters, airline baggage handler and mother of three from Oklahoma City
Suanne Mrugacz, an executive secretary for the city of Chicago
ROUND 1:
$500 is the top dollar value for the first two rounds. We're also putting a prize out to start the show:
a hi-tech package - sewing machine, portable LCD TV, and telephones collectively worth $1,473!
_ _ _ _ -
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
THING
Sherri, the champ, will begin the day's spinning... but not the winning, it's LOSE A TURN. Joyce, our self-styled resident bag lady, will try her hand instead and turn up BANKRUPT! Let's try with Suanne now, who hits a $200 T. She puts up a lot more letters (the best being three N's on $300) before choosing to attempt a solve:
L _ N _ -
D _ S T _ N _ E
R _ _ _ N _ E
THING
and she's not in a LONG-DISTANCE ROMANCE with her money... she's up close and personal with $1,525!
Lose a Turn: Sherri
Bankrupt: Joyce (loss of turn)
Sherri: one unlucky spin
Joyce: one unluckier spin
Suanne: $1,525
ROUND 2:
Same wheel, except we add another prize:
a gourmet package - stand mixer, kitchen island, and cookware set together valued at $1,519!
_ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _
_ _ _ ' _ _ / _ _ _ _
_ _ _ / _ _ _
PHRASE
Joyce will try again and hope for a better spin than her first, and she does improve a bit - a single R for $250. She finds a trio of T's with her next spin, but she'll only receive one FREE SPIN! After buying three E's, her next spin is LOSE A TURN, and the Free Spin gets handed in right away. After some more work, she buys an A and FOUR O's (at the premium price of just $100), and her next spin is the big $500... but there are no B's. Suanne has the lead and the control of the wheel, but she only gets two good spins - her third is BANKRUPT to lose $225. Sherri will try and redeem herself from her earlier misfortune now, but it's not to be... she hits the Bankrupt too. Back to Joyce, who takes a couple spins (one of them a nice $400 one for an F) and then tries to solve:
T H _ S / T _ M E
_ O _ ' V E / _ O N E
T O O / F A R
PHRASE
but she says THIS TIME YOU'VE GONE ONE TOO FAR, which is one too far in terms of the number of words. Suanne puts up the remaining consonants (the Y and G) before solving:
T H _ S / T _ M E
Y O _ ' V E / G O N E
T O O / F A R
PHRASE
and admonishes Joyce, THIS TIME YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR, as she banks another $550!
Sole Dud: B (Joyce)
Lose a Turn: Joyce (Free Spin used)
Bankrupt: Suanne ($225), Sherri (loss of turn)
DQ: Joyce's one-word-too-many solve
Sherri: two unlucky spins
Joyce: this time, she went one too far
Suanne: $2,075
ROUND 3:
$1,000 is now the top dollar, and we add yet another prize:
a time package - a mantel clock and watches worth $1,845!
_ _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _
_ _ _ _ / _ _ _
_ _ _ _
PHRASE
Suanne has all the money at present, plus the right to start the round - and she does so by hitting FOUR T's... on $100. The wheel gets her on the next spin - LOSE A TURN strikes for the third time in as many rounds. Sherri's got her turn now, and she's getting lots of letters up - now she hits the HI-TECH package and picks it up with a trio of F's! She only has $300 in cash, but she can and does buy vowels since they're so cheap, and now she solves:
O U T / O F / T H E
F _ _ I N _ / _ _ N
I N T O / T H E
F I _ E
PHRASE
and she's OUT OF THE FRYING PAN INTO THE FIRE for $100 cash plus the hi-tech prize!
Lose a Turn: Suanne
Sherri: $1,573 cash and hi-tech package
Joyce: gooseegg alert
Suanne: $2,075
ROUND 4:
$1,250 and $750 are on the wheel now, and another new prize:
a week-long trip to Waikiki, Hawaii which comes in at a whopping $3,050!
_ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
THINGS
Sherri trails by just a little, and she'll begin the fourth round. Based on the plural category, an S is a smart choice, and there are three of them... for just $100 each. No N's though, so Joyce has another chance for redemption. She puts up three letters of her own (two R's and a Y) before hitting her own bad pick in the T. Suanne takes over and doesn't let go for the rest of the round - including a $750 C - before she solves:
C _ _ R R Y
B L _ S S _ M S
THINGS
and fragrant CHERRY BLOSSOMS give her another $1,150 in cash! Last round too - she's our big winner!
Duds: N (Sherri), T (Joyce)
Sherri: $1,573 cash and hi-tech package (retired with a two-day total of $4,723)
Joyce: GOOSEEGG'D
Suanne: $3,225 cash
Suanne will return tomorrow, but first, she'll try to add to her winnings in Bonusland!
BONUS ROUND:
Suanne has elected to play for the $5,000 cash bonus here.
_ _ _ _
THING
RSTLNE give her a quarter of the puzzle...
S _ _ _
THING
CDMA get her up to half...
S _ _ A
THING
Sadly, her only guess is SODA, impossible given her choice of the D. The correct answer, which she could've bought with $5,000, is a SOFA. Still, she has an all-cash total of $3,225 and a return ticket for tomorrow's game!
