Nighttime Wheel of Fortune - Tapedate 2/14/1984 (Season 1)
Before we begin, let me clarify: This episode is known to have been taped on February 14, 1984. From what little information I can gather about the first couple of seasons, the episodes may have been "bicycled" - meaning they aired in different orders in different markets. Therefore, there may not be a definitive airdate for this or other episodes in the first and/or second seasons. If anyone has better information, please let me know and I'll be happy to make the proper adjustments. Anyway, on with the show!
Look at this studio, filled with fabulous merchandise including... a $5,900 diamond-studded heart necklace... an $8,000 touring bike and sidecar... even a sleek $12,000 Thunderbird! Over $85,000 in prizes just waiting to be won on WHEEL! OF! FORTUNE!
Let's meet tonight's three players:
Virginia Ryding, a teacher and mother of two from Fresno
Bob (no last name given), a high school math teacher from the Hollywood area
Norma Sinovich, an apartment manager and mother of one (soon to be two)
ROUND 1:
$1,000 is the top dollar for the first round. Just like daytime, players must watch out for the big black BANKRUPT or they'll lose their cash - but not their merchandise, because once they buy a prize it's theirs to keep.

PHRASE
Virginia will begin our game with a spin of misfortune - BANKRUPT. Let's try Bob instead, who finds a pair of $450 T's. Based on the location of one of the T's, he goes for the H next, and there are FOUR at $350 each! His next spin carries no monetary weight, but might bear dividends later - it's a FREE SPIN! He puts up a lot more letters, including buying all the vowels, before running afoul of BANKRUPT himself. He's not asked for the Free Spin, instead we just go to Norma, who finishes up the rest with a $175 W and the pair of $600 S's:
O N E / H A N D
W A S H E S
T H E / O T H E R
PHRASE
which lets her read off ONE HAND WASHES THE OTHER for $1,375!
Bankrupt: Virginia (loss of turn), Bob ($2,300 - Free Spin not asked for)
Norma takes that money into the Travel Extravaganza... with it, she buys the golf clubs and bag for $1,021, leather sunglasses for $205, and the telephone answering system for $140, putting $9 on a gift certificate.
Virginia: one unlucky spin
Bob: lot of work, but just a Free Spin to show for it
Norma: $1,375
ROUND 2:
Still $1,000 for our top dollar, but there's a special prize:
a component stereo system worth $800!

QUOTATION
Bob will try to redeem himself, and that Free Spin he holds will help him on his way. He'll begin by handing it in, because his first spin is BANKRUPT. He just clears it on his second try, over to $400 for a pair of R's. But that $800 will be sitting there a while - next stop is LOSE A TURN. Norma has the lead and the wheel now... she can't hold onto the stereo, but $500 each for FOUR B's is a good start for her! She puts several more letters up (flirting with Lose a Turn herself, but just staying out) before ending the round:
R _ B - _ - D _ B
D _ B / T H R _ _
_ _ _ / _ _ / T _ B
QUOTATION
and she carefully solves RUB-A-DUB-DUB THREE MEN IN A TUB for $3,550 more!
Bankrupt: Bob (loss of turn - Free Spin used)
Lose a Turn: Bob
Norma goes shopping again, this time in the Spa! Her purchases consist of pearl ear clips for $1,600, earthenware for $317, patio furniture for $860, a San Diego weekend getaway for $620, some $106 towels, and the $45 heart box, leaving $2 for another gift certificate.
Virginia: gooseegg alert
Bob: gooseegg alert
Norma: $4,925
ROUND 3:
Not over yet - we have the $5,000 space out there!

TITLE
Norma has a big lead now, and she begins the third round with another quick start - FOUR N's at $500 each! After the T and H, she calls our first bad letter of the game in the L. Virginia finally gets a chance to make her second spin, and boy is it a good one - a $5,000 S and she will solve on the spot:
S _ N _ _ N ' / _ N
T H _ / _ _ _ N
TITLE
and if it were wet in the studio, she'd be SINGIN' IN THE RAIN with her $5,000!
Sole Dud: L (Norma)
Virginia is our shopper now in the Lovers' Retreat! She wants the $1,699 bedroom furniture, the $491 bedspread, a $375 draperies certificate, a $320 10-inch color TV, a clock for $425, ladies' boots for $390, some $220 lamps, a $150 mohair shawl, a $490 man's watch, and for $113 the silver pitcher. Finally, the remaining $327 goes on a gift certificate. Of note here: Virginia had enough money for the $4,530 Bal Harbour trip, but passed it up for the 10 other prizes.
Virginia: $5,000
Bob: GOOSEEGG'D
Norma: $4,925
By a scant $75, Virginia has stolen the game away! She's going to the Bonus Round!
BONUS ROUND:
Virginia has decided to play for the Ford Thunderbird, retail value $12,877... Dim the lights!

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
THINGS
She wants the standard package of RSTLNE:
_ _ _ _ _
_ _ T _ T _ E S
THINGS
She gets the second word right away with POTATOES, but each of her guesses for the first word - BAKED, SWEET, and GREEN - contain an E, which she already called. We were looking for IDAHO POTATOES instead, so no car for Virginia, but $5,000 is a nice half-hour's payday!
