Nighttime Wheel of Fortune - 1/7/87 (Season 4)
Before we begin, let me clarify the dating: This episode contains a trailer for the movie "Assassination" which is known to have premiered on January 9, 1987. The trailer gives the premiere day as "this Friday" and not "tomorrow" so I'm conjecturing that the episode aired sometime in the three-day span prior to 1/8/87. If anyone can nail down the date more precisely, please speak up and let me know. Anyway, on with the recap!
Over $156,000 in glamorous and exciting merchandise can be won right here on WHEEL! OF! FORTUNE!
Let's meet the three players for tonight's show:
Ann Lobardo, flight attendant and instructor of flight attendants
Valerie Schafer, a computer consultant from Randolph, New Jersey
Helen Blanc, an elementary school teacher from the New Orleans area
ROUND 1:
$1,000 is the top dollar for the first two rounds. We're still in shopping mode for another eight months or so, so once our players buy a prize, it's theirs to keep.

THINGS
Ann has the right to begin, and she does so by spinning the big $1,000 for a pair of S's! She'll follow that up by getting a FREE SPIN, which she decides not to use when there is no N on her next spin. Valerie takes over and runs out the rest of the round...

_ E A T H E R S
THINGS
and she nails OSTRICH FEATHERS for $2,700!
Sole Dud: N (Ann - Free Spin not used)
Valerie will take her money and shop in the Lover's Retreat. She'll buy his/hers watches for $1,490, an electric typewriter for $549, a $480 table lamp, and the $165 shawl, putting $16 on the gift certificate.
Ann: no money but a Free Spin
Valerie: $2,700
Helen: still waiting to play
ROUND 2:
We've changed the layout but not the top dollar. There is a prize out there too:
a trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica retailing for $3,400!
There's a strange piece of editing here... the overhead shot of the TRIP wedge shows it covering $300 - on the Round 1 layout! But once we begin gameplay, it's changed over to Round 2 and all is well again.

PHRASE
Valerie has a good-sized lead and control of this round - she's just by the trip for an $800 T. Her second spin doesn't slip by though - it's dead center on the TRIP wedge and she'll pick it up, plus $150 underneath it for a single S! She'll be waiting a while to claim that trip though, because she buys the bad O. Helen finally gets a turn, and she begins with two R's on $200... followed by BANKRUPT to give the money right back. Ann has a Free Spin to help her out, but she doesn't need it right away - she finds a $200 N. She duds out with the L on her next spin though, and Pat doesn't ask for the Free Spin, so Valerie gets her turn back! She gets a single $900 G and solves it quickly:
S T _ R _
R _ _ _ N G
_ _ _
PHRASE
and she's not STARK RAVING MAD - she'll be taking the relaxing trip to Jamaica and $1,600 more cash too!
Duds: O (Valerie), L (Ann - Free Spin not asked for)
Bankrupt: Helen ($400)
Valerie shops again, this time in the Ski Area. For $472 she wants the skis, followed by the man's ski wear for $350 (for her husband), the $400 fireplace, and his/hers sunglasses for $280, leaving $98 for another gift certificate.
Ann: gooseegg alert, but still has a Free Spin
Valerie: $7,700
Helen: gooseegg alert
ROUND 3:
$5,000 is shiny, silver, and set to go!
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
EVENT
Helen gets a chance to bounce back from the bad luck she had last round. She gets a $250 T, but that money sits right where it is - she hits another penalty, LOSE A TURN this time. Ann still holds that Free Spin token, and she almost needs it right away - she just skates by Lose a Turn herself. a couple spins later, she strikes out with the bad S and will hand in the Free Spin, only to lose her turn with the dud L. It's Valerie again, and she gets $1,500 - but no D. Helen's second spin is finally a good one - $5,000! - but she blows it with the G. Back to Ann, who makes a good spin of her own to $1,500 and repeats the D that was missed on that amount earlier. Valerie thinks she has it, and tries to finesse her way to $5,000, but she doesn't get it for either the V or the C. She does get all the consonants up though:
E _ R _ P E _ N
V _ C _ T _ _ N
EVENT
and solves EUROPEAN VACATION for another $1,300!
Duds: S (Ann - Free Spin used), L (Ann), D (Valerie), G (Helen)
Lose a Turn: Helen
DQ: Ann's repeated D
Valerie will shop once more in the Game Room. She gets the $300 camera, some $350 games (including the Wheel of Fortune Deluxe home game!), $400 wallpaper, and a $150 ice bucket, putting the last $100 on the night's last gift certificate.
Ann: GOOSEEGG'D
Valerie: $9,000
Helen: GOOSEEGG'D
MAINGAME SWEEP!
Valerie has all the prizes, and she'll perhaps be adding to them in Bonusland!
BONUS ROUND:
Valerie has chosen to play for the Hi-Lo travel trailer - a prize valued at $12,774 - Dim the lights!
_ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _
THING
Valerie's help will be the standard package of LNRSTE:
_ L _ S S
R _ N _
THING
It takes her no time at all to clearly enunciate CLASS RING! She wins the trailer for a total of $21,774 in prizes over the course of the show!
