Nighttime Wheel of Fortune: "Caribbean Week" - Original Airdate 3/22/2001 (Season 18)
It's five days of island fun and mainland cash - Caribbean Week on WHEEL! OF! FORTUNE!
In this season, the Toss-Ups debuted. There are two, both worth $1,000 - let's begin with the first!
TOSS-UP #1:
_ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _
PHRASE
Our yellow player, Michael, buzzes first:
S H A R E / A N D
_ H _ _ _ / A L _ _ E
PHRASE
but he won't SHARE AND SHARE ALIKE... he has $1,000 and control of Round 1!
Let's meet our three players tonight:
Michael Doss, director of market research and Lego lover from Tustin, California
Blythe Hartley, a senior geography major at the University of Texas at Austin
Dia Day, building services worker from St. Charles, Missouri
ROUND 1:
$2,500 is the top dollar value, but there's nothing special in the opening round.

_ _ _ _ _ _
ON THE MAP
This might be right up Blythe's alley, but it's Michael who earned the first spin, which is worth $500 for each of two T's. He follows that with the logical H, also for $500, and the strategic E (the obvious one plus two more). He puts up several more letters but then the white LOSE A TURN stops his progress. Blythe gets her chance at the puzzle and her first spin is the big $2,500 for the single D! She gets the N (on $800, but mis-scored as the adjacent $550) and trio of A's up then...
T H E / A R A _ _ A N
D E S E R T
ON THE MAP
she puts her geography studies to good use by solving THE ARABIAN DESERT for $2,800, which should really be $3,050!
Lose a Turn: Michael
Dia: has not had a turn
Michael: $1,000
Blythe: $2,800 (should be $3,050)
ROUND 2 - JACKPOT ROUND:
The Eggland's Best Jackpot is on the wheel, as is the first prize of the night:
a $2,500 gift certificate to buy hand-crafted art from Novica.com!
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _
_ _ _ _ ' _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
SHOW BIZ
Blythe will begin the round after winning the last one, and she seems to have a penchant for starting her turns in big ways - she hits $3,500 for three S's, a $10,500 spin! She's spinning high and finding letters in big multiples, but LOSE A TURN stops her cold with five figures in her bank. Dia gets her first turn, and it's three R's on $450, followed by the JACKPOT - and there's a C! With $10,250 in the pot, now would be a great time to solve, but it's still a little too early for it, so Dia spins again... not a good idea, it's BANKRUPT. Michael will try to rebound from the earlier Lose a Turn, but instead compounds his woes with another one. Back to Blythe and all her money - she buys the trio of I's and then overshoots the big money to $600 for SIX N'S! She buys out the vowels, and while chipping away one letter at a time, she finds $3,500 again for an L! Finally, with only two letters left, the lightbulb goes on...
L E A V I N G / Y O U R
H A N _ _ R I N T S / A T
M A N N ' S / C H I N E S E
T H E A T R E
SHOW BIZ
She solves LEAVING YOUR HANDPRINTS AT MANN'S CHINESE THEATRE for a whopping $23,950!
Lose a Turn: Blythe, Michael
Bankrupt: Dia ($1,350)
Unclaimed Jackpot: a massive $17,250
Dia: one unlucky turn
Michael: $1,000
Blythe: $26,750 (should be $27,000)
ROUND 3 - $10,000 ROUND:
The $10,000 "Oreo" wedge is on the wheel, and so is another prize:
a trip to Grand Bahama Island valued at $5,340!

SAME NAME
Dia will try once more to get on the scoreboard, but instead she gets the first dud of the night... no N on $800. Michael has his turn next, and it's the fourth top dollar hit of the night - a $3,500 S, followed by a -$3,500 Bankrupt on the left side of the Oreo. Blythe has a big lead and control of the wheel, but not for long, because she follows two $300 T's with a LOSE A TURN (ironic, since the $300 she hit would've been Free Spin in an earlier round). Back to Dia, who calls the bad R on the SHOPPING prize, so Michael tries again and hits the $3,500 again for an H! Unfortunately, he repeats the bad N that Dia called, so he'll lose his turn and we return to Blythe. She gets a few letters up (and completes one word) before making a mistake with the M. Dia finally breaks the dud streak with a K, but then starts a new one by picking the dud P. Meanwhile, Michael adds to his Lose a Turn collection, so we turn to Blythe in the hopes that she can save this round... and she gets the pair of B's on $3,500 - our SIXTH top dollar hit of the night! Three E's will help her out, and she's got it:
E _ E / &
L I G H T / B _ L B
S _ C K E T

It's EYE & LIGHT BULB SOCKET for another $9,200!
Duds: N (Dia), R (Dia), M (Blythe), P (Dia)
Bankrupt: Michael ($3,500)
Lose a Turn: Blythe, Michael
DQ: Michael's repeated N
Dia: three duds on four spins this round
Michael: $1,000
Blythe: $35,950 (should be $36,200)
TOSS-UP #2:

AROUND THE HOUSE
Michael buzzes in again:
_ / _ _ _ R

AROUND THE HOUSE
and sweeps the tossups with A PAIR OF PLIERS!
Dia: gooseegg alert
Michael: $2,000
Blythe: $35,950 (should be $36,200)
ROUND 4 (Full Speedup):
Here's the puzzle, but the bells are ringing:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ -
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
RHYME TIME
Pat will spin one spoke short of the glittery $5,000 so all consonants are worth $1,300 in the speed round. On his third turn, Michael just beats the buzzer (having been the only one to successfully place letters in the round):
_ _ _ T C _ _ -
_ _ _ T C _ _
RHYME TIME
and gets $5,200 for HOOTCHY-KOOTCHY!
Duds: R (Blythe), N (Dia), S (Michael), M (Blythe), L (Dia)
Dia: GOOSEEGG'D
Michael: $7,200
Blythe: $35,950 (should be $36,200)
Blythe has dominated, and the trip to Bonusland is hers to take!
BONUS ROUND:
From the WHEEL letters, HEE is left, containing an Infiniti, a Jetta, and the cash. Blythe plucks the H and off we go!
_ _ _ _ _ _
FICTIONAL CHARACTER
RSTLNE will start her off:
_ _ R _ _ E
FICTIONAL CHARACTER
CMHA will be her picks...
_ A R _ _ E
FICTIONAL CHARACTER
It takes her several seconds to reason it out, but her only guess is the correct one - BARBIE! Her prize will be the green Jetta retailing for $19,825, giving her a final tally of $55,775 (which should've been $56,025)!
A final note: the end credits allude to technical difficulties which required a portion of the game to be re-produced. This may or may not account for the phantom $250 from Round 1, but it's possible, considering Vanna seemed to be having puzzleboard trouble around that point.
It's five days of island fun and mainland cash - Caribbean Week on WHEEL! OF! FORTUNE!
