Daytime Wheel of Fortune - Original Airdate 12/18/1980
Look at these extravagant prizes! Fabulous merchandise including... a diamond wreath pin... a piano... and even a trip to New York City! Their total value is over $55,000 and they're just waiting to be won here on Wheel of Fortune!
Let's meet our three lady contestants, including a returning champion:
Laura Lear, a court reporter and handwriting analyst
Joyce Smeltzer, our two-day champion with $14,600 in prizes
Barbara Coleman, a professional singer with 11 siblings
ROUND 1:
$750 is the top dollar value for our first round. The players will be watching out for that black space "BANKRUPT" so that they don't lose their cash, but their merchandise is always safe - once they buy a prize, it's theirs to keep.

THING
Laura drew the number 1 before the show began, so she gets spin number 1 and it goes into $300, but there's no T for her. She quickly gets her turn back after Joyce strikes out with S and Barbara Bankrupts... but she loses it again with the L call. Joyce gets on the board with a $100 N but can't do any more due to the oncoming Lose a Turn. Barbara will also end her turn with $100 after finding a $350 R and buying the absent A. Laura puts up a P to give herself some cash, but fails to find an F. Joyce hits the Lose a Turn again, while Barbara can't hit with H. Laura has a good opportunity on a $600 hit, but misses on the M attempt. Joyce may have something going here... she finds pairs of D's and I's followed by a $500 C and then the last consonant (a G):
R I C _
P _ D D I N G
THING
Joyce gets some RICE PUDDING and also $950 to shop with!
Duds: T (Laura), S (Joyce), L (Laura), A (Barbara), F (Laura), H (Barbara), M (Laura)
Bankrupt: Barbara (loss of turn)
Lose a Turn: Joyce (twice)
Joyce will take that $950 into the Bedroom and purchase the $688 bedroom furniture and the $249 Superphone, leaving $13 to put on the day's first gift certificate.
Laura: 1 for 5 on letter calls
Joyce: $950
Barbara: 1 for 3 with a Bankrupt
ROUND 2:
$1,000 is the big money for this round, and the second Bankrupt is the big danger.

TITLE
Champion Joyce currently holds the lead and the right to spin the wheel, and spin she does, landing on $300 for a pair of T's. The logical H call follows - two of those for $1,000 each! A pair of E's also comes after that, and Joyce barely gets her next spin by the Bankrupt to $600 for an R. Three O's will help her to fill the puzzle in, as will the single F and S. Joyce will then get some thinking time as we go to commercial... here's the board as our players turn their backs:
F O R / _ H O _ / T H E
_ E _ _ / T O _ _ S
TITLE
Coming out of the break, Joyce's $3,100 will be left waiting as her turn is knocked out by the bad N call. The audience groans heavily as we go to Barbara, who gets the W on $800 and the FOUR L's on $450...
F O R / W H O _ / T H E

TITLE
and she will ask FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, and it tolls for her - $2,600 is hers to spend buying prizes!
Sole Dud: N (Joyce)
Barbara takes $2,600 to the Home Entertainment Center, buying the $670 stereo, the $479 light fixture, and the $1,450 piano! One dollar remains, and it goes on a gift certificate.
Laura: did not get a turn in this round
Joyce: $950
Barbara: $2,600
ROUND 3:
$2,000 and $1,500 wedges are available from this round on!

PHRASE
Barbara starts the round with the lead, but won't keep her turn long as there is a negative report on the N call. Laura gets her first turn since Round 1 and fails on the F, giving it to Joyce, who finds letters in pairs - two each of S's, I's and A's. She's out of money and must spin, but then Joyce nails $2,000 for a T! She can't get an R on her next try though, sending it back around to Barbara. She can't hit with H, but Laura doesn't miss with two M's! She gets greedy though, and Bankrupt cleans out her $1,100. Joyce hits Lose a Turn and Barbara Bankrupts, though, sending it right back around the horn to Laura, who Bankrupts again! Joyce will just go for the solve:
T I M I _
A S / A
M _ _ S _
PHRASE
All these bad spins have her TIMID AS A MOUSE, but she gets $2,000 and the lead!
Duds: N (Barbara), F (Laura), R (Joyce), H (Barbara)
Bankrupt: Laura x2 ($1,100, then a loss of turn), Barbara (loss of turn)
Lose a Turn: Joyce
Joyce takes the $2,000 to the Gourmet Center, and she will claim the dishwasher for $400, the microwave for $530, some small kitchen appliances for $371, flatware for $351, dinnerware for $300, and finally some $18 baskets. That leaves $30 for a gift certificate.
Laura: gooseegg alert
Joyce: $2,950
Barbara: $2,600
ROUND 4 (Full Speedup):
Time enough for a round, but it's time for the final spin of the day... Chuck licks his finger, points, hauls off, and spins... $350, one peg short of the red $2,000 space.
