Nighttime Wheel of Fortune: "Teen Week" - Original Airdate 9/3/1991 (Season 9)
It's the second day of the new season! We're coming from Disneyland, and we have teenagers competing for cash, prizes, and a spot in the Friday Finals here on WHEEL! OF! FORTUNE!
Let's meet our teen trio that are manning the podiums tonight:
Gary Osborne, a high-school senior from Midlothian, Texas and an aspiring actor and costume designer
Jason Cecil, a junior hoping to become a biomedical engineer from Lexington, Kentucky
Jimmie Watkins III, a track runner and prospective lawyer from Riata, California
ROUND 1:
$1,000 is the top dollar value in the opening round. The top three scorers come back on Friday for another chance to win big!
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ / _ _ _ / _ _ _
PHRASE
Gary has the right to open up the action and does so with a spin of $250 for a single S. Jason goes next after Gary's second spin runs into Lose a Turn, but he's quickly knocked out by the bad N. Jimmie suffers the pain of the yellow penalty wedge as well, so Gary gets another chance. With no T in the puzzle, Jason gets the wheel back and lights up a Y, but then he locks himself out with L. Jimmie is robbed of his turn by the R, while Gary seems to repeat the N (although it's not recognized as a repeat letter). After D and C come up duds, Gary has it right back long enough to fail with F... but Jason finds a P! He buys our first vowel, finding one A, but then can't hit with H. Jimmie incurs the wrath of the black Bankrupt, giving it back to Gary again - and he gets a B, followed by four E's and then the last consonant (the K) on the Free Spin:
P E E K A B _ _
_ / S E E / Y _ _
PHRASE
Thankfully, he's able to end the round by saying PEEKABOO I SEE YOU for $200!
Duds: N (Jason), T (Gary), L (Jason), R (Jimmie), D (Jason), C (Jimmie), F (Gary), H (Jason)
Lose a Turn: Gary, Jimmie
Bankrupt: Jimmie (loss of turn)
DQ: Gary's repeated N
Gary: $200 + Free Spin
Jason: 3 for 7 this round
Jimmie: 0 for 2 with a Bankrupt and a Lose a Turn
ROUND 2:
We upgrade the top dollar to $2,500 and add a special prize to the wheel:
Royal Dalton china and crystal stemware which is worth $4,248!
_ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _
PHRASE
Jason will start off this round hoping for better luck than the first. He finds a $450 T and follows with the logical H, but gets knocked out by the N instead of buying a vowel. Jimmie is just short of the $2,500 wedge on his first spin, but he's doing well enough for himself, filling in all but three letters. Unfortunately, none of the three are Y, so Gary gets control and lights the two D's for $350 each, which are also the last consonants:
T H E / B A S E S
A R E / L _ A D E D
PHRASE
THE BASES ARE LOADED with cash - another $700 for Gary!
Duds: N (Jason), Y (Jimmie)
Gary: $900 + Free Spin
Jason: is now 5 for 10 on letter calls
Jimmie: lost $1,800 on that dud Y
ROUND 3:
$3,500 is the best and $1,000 leads the rest as we put out the second wheel template.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ / _ _ _
_ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _
THINGS
Jimmie spins first this time in an attempt to make up for his failures in the previous round. His first rotation does that and more... $3,500 for each of three T's! Three spins later, he comes back to it and finds three R's as well - he's over $23,000 already! But after buying the lone E, his turn is lost to the L. Gary is back in charge, but he loses his turn to Bankrupt right away. Since Pat doesn't ask for the Free Spin, that lets Jason pick up the CHINA prize with a Y. Two spins later, he hits the $3,500 space himself and gets a P at the very front of the puzzle! After buying several vowels, he puts up the pair of M's on $900 and elects to solve...
P A S T R A M I
O N / R Y E
_ I T H / M _ S T A R _
THINGS
and Jason can buy a really nice PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MUSTARD with his $4,700 and eat it on his new china!
Sole Dud: L (Jimmie)
Bankrupt: Gary (loss of turn - FS not asked for)
Gary: $900 + Free Spin
Jason: $8,948 cash and china
Jimmie: gooseegg alert
ROUND 4 (Partial Speedup):
The silver $5,000 is ready to satisfy all cash cravings...
we've also added a trip to Cancun valued at $4,288!
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _
EVENT
Gary has a chance to chase Jason now, and a $400 S gets him on his way. He starts a mini-run but eventually misses on the M, leading to the Free Spin being turned in. After a P and three N's come up, the bells sound - here's the board going into speedup mode:
N _ T _ _ N _ _
T _ _ _ P _ _ N _
S _ R _ _ _
EVENT
Pat drops the red flipper into the red $400 space, giving us the value for all remaining consonants. It comes around to Jimmie, who won't let his last chance slip away...
N _ T _ _ N _ L
T _ L _ P _ _ N _
S _ R _ _ Y
EVENT
He's able to solve NATIONAL TELEPHONE SURVEY for $400!
Dud (pre-speedup): M (Gary - FS used)
Dud (post-speedup): G (Jason)
Gary: $900
Jason: $8,948 cash and china
Jimmie: $400
Jason will go for the big prizes in Bonusland!
BONUS ROUND:
The possible prizes include a Chevy Camaro, a trip for four to Italy, another unnamed car, a college annuity, and the cash (both of the latter two being $25,000). Jason picks the card held behind the L in WHEEL.

RSTLNE will start us off with a third of this puzzle...

THING
DCPA gives another third...

THING
Even Yogi Bear can solve this one - it's a PICNIC BASKET! Jason's envelope says SPORTS CAR, and it's that Camaro RS which retails for $16,825! His total comes to $25,773 in cash and prizes, which bodes well for his chances at a spot in Friday's finals!
