The article seems to be more biased towards Jeopardy! But I guess it sort of makes sense with Alex being Canadian and all... Sorry for Canadians, but at least it makes things in terms of viewing times fair game now as far as I know. No more spoilers on the show's Facebook page at 4:59. The one other market I know of that aired Wheel before 7 recently dropped both shows as well.

That blows, seeing I am from Canada! But then again, I haven't watched WOF much as of lately. I pretty much lost interest in such show since Charlie O'Donnell's passing. It just isn't the same without him anymore.
Sorry for my friends from Canada, but at least this may mean an opportunity for me to view WOF from the local CBS affiliate in Boston. Unless that's the station that Mario was referring to - in which case, WOF will not be seen where I live anymore.
At least I still have TPIR for my game show fix.
I wonder what caused CBC to cancel WOF? Is WOF, as a whole, declining in ratings?

The whole "paying $20mn for the rights" issue, especially when they're going through massive budget cuts and are supposed to be the national broadcaster for Canada.
I think the article focused more on Jeopardy because it was talking about the primetime lineup for next season - J!'s still a 7:30 start in the cable systems I've seen.

Unless that's the station that Mario was referring to - in which case, WOF will not be seen where I live anymore. It's not. I was referring to an independent market in lower New York: WLNY. They aired J!/Wheel at 5/5:30 EST, except in Manhattan. Because of disputes with NY's ABC affiliate WABC, which airs the shows at the typical 7/7:30, there was a second feed for Manhattan that replaced the shows. I think it could also be because they're not originally Canadian programming.

The whole "paying $20mn for the rights" issue, especially when they're going through massive budget cuts and are supposed to be the national broadcaster for Canada. shaymin is exactly right. The fact of the matter is that the CBC has been struggling financially for years. Being government-owned and run media, their entire budget comes from the taxpayers of Canada and thus, there is less room for error then there is with private media. The CBC is in the midst of massive budget cuts (including hundreds- HUNDREDS!- of their news personnel), and the $20M they were paying for a non-Canadian program was, simply, a price they could no longer afford. They lost the rights to The Hockey Theme for the same reason...they could simply no longer afford to pay what the rightsholders wanted for it.It's a shame, but really, it's no surprise. Also, this is about the TV show, so it can go in BYT. MOVED

Apparently, it's possible that the CBC's financial issues may have started as early as 1992. I know this because I have a close relative who used to work for the CBC (he was a reporter), and he was in danger of being laid off every time a contract was expiring. CBC workers went on strike on some occasions during this period, many workers fighting for job security. Some workers ended up getting early retirement packages in 2000 just to eliminate those workers and make them happy. CBC workers were involved in a lockout (the management's version of a strike) in the fall of 2005, and resulted in endless reruns of programming and no newcasts for several weeks. The lockout ended just before Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Makes me wonder if CBC cancelled Mr. Dressup reruns in September 2006 as a way to save on costs? But in either event, I will be watching WOF on CBC as much as I can over the coming weeks. Once it's gone, CBC will air nothing but crap.

I'm not happy with what the CBC has done either. In fact, that really makes me wish they could have their own version like Quebec did back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I'd be pleased for you guys up there especially since I can imagine how much you like to watch "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel."
But after thinking it over, I realized that it's one thing that they cancelled "Wheel," but I'm actually more unhappy they cancelled "Jeopardy!" knowing that Alex Trebek is native to Canada.

Game shows could do very well here in Canada. I can remember when DoND came, everyone I knew submitted an application to get on the show. Plus, we have had our own game shows in the past, such as Definition. I would love to see a Canadian spinoff of some show.

I was reading that CBC never really planned to air these game shows for very long. One of their executives said they only paid such a high price for the shows in order to boost ratings for the network and to held lead them into primetime and apparently since that's been accomplished they're dropping the shows from their lineup.

Bumping to note that CHCH will no longer be airing Wheel or Jeopardy! according to their Twitter.

Any details about CHEK?
EDIT: Never mind. I looked at their schedule, and they specifically mention Teacher's Week on September 15th.

Despite being out of market, I could get CHCH on my cable system - unless CTV picks it up (not bloody likely) I'll be down to Boston. Still, it's probably the same issue that started this thread in the first place (rights fees).

The new Canadian rights have apparently fallen into the hands of "Yes TV", which is the former CTS/Crossroads Television Service. They've picked up X Factor UK and Biggest Loser as well.
