Nighttime Wheel of Fortune: "Tropical Paradise" - Original Airdate 2/24/97 (Season 14)
Off with the trilons, on with the monitors... today is the first day of the new puzzleboard on WHEEL! OF! FORTUNE!
Here are the three players tasked with lighting the new monitors:
Jim Henderson, plumber and father of three who lives in Bonney Lake, Washington
Nancy Koch, a future cosmetology instructor from Provo, Utah
Joel Hamley, one of the many screenplay writers in Los Angeles
============================================================
ROUND 1:
Top Dollar: $1,000
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _
PLACE
As usual, the player at the red podium drew the number 1 and has the right to start, which means that Jim has the first spin. He'll provide us with the first touched letter - a $250 S - but can't follow it with a T. Nancy also has $250 in her bank after lighting two N's and buying the E. Her second spin is just short of $1,000 which is for the best as the R is rotten this round. Joel takes his first turn and ties us at $250 with a P. He's the first to hit a better spin... a $550 C, which gives him more than enough for three A's. Back goes the wheel to $550 as the L lights...
_ A L E N C _ A
S P A _ N
PLACE
and Joel solves VALENCIA SPAIN for $1,100!
Duds: T (Jim), R (Nancy)
Retired Banks: $500 ($250 each from Jim and Nancy)
============================================================
ROUND 2 - $10,000 ROUND:
Top Dollar: $2,500
Wheel Prize: Hobie Cat Sailboat - $3,650 (CATAMARAN)

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ' _
_ _ _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _ _
SHOW BIZ
Nancy begins with the obvious S, getting a second one to go with it at the rate of $300. Her score jumps to $3,300 when a triple T crops up on $900! That drops a bit as Nancy buys four A's (including the obvious one) and a pair of E's. She's spinning again and calling the single R on the CATAMARAN wedge! After buying five O's, the wheel makes more rotations as Nancy gets two F's and three L's, all for $250 each. Her next spin starts with $250 but has an extra zero attached - $2,500 for the H! $500 more cash is added for the double W and $800 for the K, as Nancy's score crosses the $7,000 mark (not counting the prize). More good luck is coming her way - $600 for the D, and finally the Free Spin for the two N's...

S T A R / O N
H O L L _ W O O D ' S

SHOW BIZ
While Nancy's not GETTING A STAR ON HOLLYWOOD'S WALK OF FAME, she's getting the lead for sure - $8,200 cash and the catamaran!
PERFECT ROUND!
Jim: lit the first letter and was never heard from since
Nancy: $11,850 + Free Spin
Joel: $1,100
============================================================
ROUND 3 - JACKPOT ROUND:
Top Dollar: $3,500
_ ' _ _ / _ _ _ _
_ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ / _ _ _
BEFORE & AFTER
Joel had the first cash but now trails by over $10,000... he needs big money to get back in the game! He's just short of the $3,500 space but strikes out with S on $250 anyway. Jim gets his first turn since the first round, and it's a nice start - $800 times four L's! He'll pick up the obvious I (plus another) and a couple A's too, leaving him at $2,700 as he spins a second time and hits Lose a Turn. Nancy takes control, but knocks out her Free Spin with the N. Her cardboard-powered second chance is slightly more successful with a couple $250 C's. A $350 Y and lone O fill the blanks in somewhat, as do the $600 T and $300 K. Nancy's next choice is to buy the two U's, the last vowels. Spinning again, she adds $900 for a pair of B's and $1,000 for two R's...
I ' L L / C A L L
Y O U / R I _ _ T
B A C K / R U B
BEFORE & AFTER
and by filling in I'LL CALL YOU RIGHT BACK RUB, Nancy adds another $3,150!
Duds: S (Joel), N (Nancy - Free Spin used)
Lose a Turn: Jim
Retired Bank: $2,700 (Jim)
Unclaimed Jackpot: $9,100
Jim: derailed by Lose a Turn
Nancy: $15,000
Joel: $1,100
============================================================
ROUND 4 (Partial Speed-Up):
Top Dollar: $5,000
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _
THING
Even though the category is different, the puzzle formation is the same as Round 1, and the same player starts - Jim. Just as before, he starts with an S, but his flipper just flopped off of the shiny wedge into $600... too bad. His luck runs out with the L call, giving control back to Nancy. She gets a $250 T as the bells ring - here's the board as we go into speed-up mode:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ T
_ _ _ S _
THING
Final Spin: $500
Nancy keeps her turn and gets a couple N's up, but she has no guess and says so. Likewise, Joel doesn't have enough to work with even when he adds an R to the board. Jim misses with the M, but not Nancy with two P's...
P R _ _ N _ N T
P _ _ S _
THING
but her guess of PROMINENT PHASE is a letter long and therefore wrong. Joel gets the G on the top line (the last consonant, though the OVL beeps do not sound) and guesses PREGNANT PHASE, which is wrong as well. Jim puts the E's up, says PREGNANT, but takes too long to follow up with PAUSE after the buzzer. Nancy is informed at this point that only vowels remain; she gets the A's up...
P R E G N A N T
P A _ S E
THING
and finally solves PREGNANT PAUSE for $2,250!
Dud (Pre-FS): L (Jim)
Dud (Post-FS): M (Jim)
Missed Solves: "PROMINENT PHASE" by Nancy, "PREGNANT PHASE" by Joel, late correct solve by Jim
Retired Banks: $1,600 ($600 by Jim, $1,000 by Joel)
Jim: lovely parting gifts
Nancy: $17,250
Joel: $1,100
Nancy took a clear lead after the second round, and it will follow her to Bonusland!
============================================================
BONUS ROUND:
Our bonus prizes include $31,000 and $32,000 BMWs, a $19,000 trip to Fiji, a $16,000 trip to Tahiti, and the ever-present $25,000. From the WHEEL letters, Nancy picks the first E.

THING
RSTLNE only gives one letter, but CHPO is no slouch!
C O O L

THING
COOL WHIP is the answer, given immediately... the turquoise BMW is the prize! Specifically, it's a BMW Z3 roadster convertible cashing in at $32,420! That brings Nancy's final score to $49,670 and could get her a spot in the Friday Finals!
