It's time to start this season's road shows from the Oregon Convention Center in Portland! The first aired week is "Going Green", which happens to be third of four taped weeks (April 2). For at least this week, the usual John Hoke intro cue w/ the opening logo plays before we hear the Portland montage music.
EPISODE #5621 - GOING GREEN (PORTLAND)
$1,000 Tossup - THING
_ _ L _ R E _ E _ G Y
Manny powers up w/ this SOLAR ENERGY. The first aired players competing in Portland this season are...
Manny Guendalay: newly-appointed middle school teacher for the last nine weeks of the '11-'12 school yr. from Eugene, OR Emily Eichelberger: research analyst for a full-service marketing research firm from Albany, OR Lindsay Phillips: regional trainer from a made-from-scratch cafe/bakery from Seattle (originally from NJ)
$2,000 Tossup - PERSON
_ _ _ _ - D _ S _ _ N C E R U _ _ _ _
Emily solves LONG-DISTANCE RUNNER.
ECO-FRIENDLY PRIZE: Earth River Expedition in Patagonia, Chile w/ the hotwire.com travel worth $9K
Jackpot Round - BEFORE AND AFTER
This Week's Category Wipe: recycling truck w/ a $ on it
Emily starts this round w/ an N for the MDW. After a little work, she says D for dummy while on the Chile adventure. Second, Lindsay wastes her turn by repeating the D. Third, Manny finds three T's and two M's for the Wild Card. Next are two O's via FP, C for Chile and a P for the green 1/2 KIA. But after picking up the Seventh Generation gift tag w/ a G, he BANKRUPTS next to where he just picked up the WC to clean him out of that, the plate and $13,750 cash and prizes. Emily doesn't do any better w/ the one near top dollar, so goodbye $1K and MDW. After those bad breaks, Lindsay spins once for the F...
F I T S / L I _ E / A G L O V E C O M P A R T M E N T
...and her solve FITS LIKE A GLOVE COMPARTMENT for the house minimum.
SOLE DUD: D (Emily) BANKRUPTS: 2 (Manny, Emily) DQ: Lindsay's D repeat UNCLAIMED JACKPOT: $10,300
Pre-Round 2 Scores Manny: $1K Emily: $2K Lindsay: same as Manny
========
Mystery Round - PLACE
Lindsay's first w/ double S's and five O's before running into LAT. Second, Manny hits the same BANKRUPT he got in the last round. Third, Emily picks up the green 1/2 KIA w/ an N, buys some E's and spots three T's while on the Mystery Wedge next to the vacated MDW. Despite only having $250 in her bank, she declines the gamble (she should have). Next is an H for the other 1/2 KIA, but then LAT to possibly cost her $18,750 cash and Soul. Lindsay's next letters are three C's, a single I, but a dud of V. Manny narrows things down to this...
_ R O _ _ C E S E C T I O N / O _ T H E / G R O C E R Y S T O R E
...he solves PRODUCE SECTION OF THE GROCERY STORE for $3,750.

TOTAL MAINGAME WINNINGS: $22,690

$100,000 Bonus Round The all-electric vehicle for this week's shows is a Nissan Leaf. After surviving a tough game, Emily lands on the G.
Category: THING Not much to start this one off...

...she finds some BIRD FOOD for the win! But is this one of the rare cases where the million would've been won?...
...YES -- THAT'S THE BAD NEWS. BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT SHE'S OUR SECOND $100,000 WINNER IN THREE AIRED FIRST-RUN EPISODES!!! She's now your highest winner of this season w/ an all-cash total of $111,200! And the Rebuilding Together's bank up to $7,500.

Surprised that we stripped almost all the cardboard in R1 but gave it all right back.
She lost the MDW, but a $100,000 win's a $100,000 win, especially on the first ep of a month on the road. I'm happy.

R1: Ugly opening round and painful BANKRUPTS for Manny and Emily. Lindsay's D repeat was pretty dumb.
R2: More pain for Emily -- not driving off in the KIA.
R3: Ugh, Lindsay -- M's and C's were unrevealed!
Bonus Round: I had this w/ Emily's choices. After a pretty low-scoring game, this was an excellent win!
EPISODE RATING: 8 out of 10 (would've been perfect had Emily not lost that MDW early on)

Whoa, certainly didn't expect another $100K win already! Good call on the B; I probably would've gotten stuck on HARD or WORD from just -RD.

Well, it's about time we get away from the jaded atmosphere of the Sony Pictures Studios and have some real fun, or so we hoped... R1: I don't even know where to start with the worst round of the season. First off, cleaning the Wheel of its cardboard only to lose it all, then being GREEDY and losing the MDW because of it, then pulling off a pointless spingle because her mind was completely set on "spin once, then solve"! R2: This round wasn't much better thanks to those penalty wedges... R3: While gameplay in this round was better, the puzzle was just...UGH. I knew with all those letters that this would be a contrived phrase. BR: Nice for Emily to redeem herself. Unfortunately... her greediness cost her $900K! An audience member actually tweeted about the win after he saw it. Thankfully, I forgot that there was supposed to be a win early this week once I started watching the show, so I guess I did get genuinely excited by this. Also, her family's reaction to the 100K was HILARIOUS. So much that screenshots of it were circulating on Twitter shortly after it happened. It would be great if it became a meme. Anybody know how Buzzerblog knew about BOTH 100K wins? Wario/Tris/Dylan, did any of you notify them when I told you the dates? It's OK if you did. Just wondering how they knew as well. Speaking of that other 100K win, if they hadn't moved last Thursday's show (originally scheduled for Friday), history would have been made, no? R1 shows why there's TOO MUCH STUFF on the Wheel. The first 10 seconds of this commercial describes the Wheel perfectly these days... The only good thing about this show was the BR, which balanced it to just a slightly above average show (I really should start giving numerical ratings)

I got to say this is a very interesting way to start things off in Portland for their first ever time there.
I don't think I've ever seen someone lose the Million Dollar Wedge in the main game (either by Bankrupt or failure to solve the puzzle in the round they picked up the wedge) but then go on to win $100,000 in the bonus round.
I don't know if Emily knew the round one puzzle or not, but the thing is this. Had she not taken that extra spin and everything else had gone the way they did, she would've been the biggest all-cash winner in the history of the show.

This is only the second time ever a $100K's win felt a little bittersweet; Emily so should've solved the Jackpot Round puzzle when control got back to her, but maybe she was still stumped on the first line just like everybody on the panel at that time. At least she followed up a poor maingame the right way; I knew it after her choices appeared & she thankfully stayed away from FEED from the second word. Score: 9 I got to say this is a very interesting way to start things off in Portland for their first ever time there. I don't think I've ever seen someone lose the Million Dollar Wedge in the main game (either by Bankrupt or failure to solve the puzzle in the round they picked up the wedge) but then go on to win $100,000 in the bonus round. That happened once on Family Week from the most recent Hawaii road trip back in Nov. '08. MarioGS: Merged consecutive posts.

Well when Emily landed on the MDW in the first round on her first spin, I thought it was going to be one, based off the "Watch Outs" sent out by Buzzerblog. Then when she won the $100K, I had flashbacks of the sisters who also hit $100K during a week in Hawaii in which they too also had the MDW in their possession at one point.

I feel sorry for Manny. He was easily one of the best contestants the show's had in a long time. Such energy, excitement, and genuine happiness to be on that stage, and he played quite well, too...kept playing along in an effort to maximize his winnings. Taking risks, I like. Unfortunately, the wheel didn't seem to like him very much... Round 3 showed a major problem with the Trip Puzzle. Contestants should not be given prizes for doing nothing but solving a puzzle that everyone else partially filled in... I normally don't care for the "on-location" shows (especially for four weeks of them in a row), since they're usually filled with time-wasting side segments...but tonight's show felt largely like a regular Culver City episode. Fine by me.

While the million comments are more justified than usual because the maingame result would have very likely have remained the same, you still can't say that the bonus spin goes exactly the same, letter calls go the same, etc. Also, she wasn't that great of a player as evidenced by taking 5-6 sec on that BR - it's very possible she would have frozen up all the way as well.
I'm enjoying another nice 100k streak... but that maingame was one of the worst ones for even on the road. It's like everyone got nervous in R1 (I can't imagine both of them didn't know it - but maybe - but clearly it was time to solve), and nothing came together the rest of the way. I'm hoping for some insight in the post-blog tomorrow from Emily on what happened, but I'm not counting on it.
Interesting little BR there, I'll put it on the easy side but *not* by too much. Any good player would scoop that up with the Ds only, yet it took Emily awhile with that and the B, so yeah... congrats to her, still - on the road is more often about luck than skill.
One more thing - vowel calling in R4 was a good idea, but Manny did it too early then got away from it!

Round 3 showed a major problem with the Trip Puzzle. Contestants should not be given prizes for doing nothing but solving a puzzle that everyone else partially filled in... You forgot how it often leads to ridiculous puzzles. In Culver City, you wouldn't get such loud "aww"s for Bankrupts, applause coming back from commercials, or standing ovations for 100K wins period.

BTW, anyone complaining that Emily was greedy is being a hypocrite... starting with cheezyguytv, we've long said that contestants overvalue the MDW and make bad decisions on it. Now was going for it with the minimum $1000 and just two singles left the best move? ... probably not, but not the worst in the world. So when the MDW would have actually mattered - an extremely rare occurrence that has only happened one other time in the history of the MDW - you can't go turn around and criticize the move, frustrating as it may seem.

I still think she was. If she didn't know it, I'd understand, but her inflection and facial expression when she said "I'm gonna spin" suggested she wasn't satisfied with her $1,000. I don't think that people need to play super-conservatively if they have it (like solving when there's a quintuple left. Definitely go for those), but just play with caution. I think the best move was to solve right away to secure it, then play like normal for the rest of the show to build a lead, but still never get too greedy.

$100K win tonight, yeah! But I'm pretty upset for tonight. Why? She had a million dollar wedge, but lost it by that "black space butthole". If the 1st round wasn't horrible, we could've had the big night for Portland. Well I might as well check it out tomorrow to see what Vanna's dress look like in confetti. XD

This one started ugly, then redeemed itself in the end. I can't blame Emily for wanting to go for more than the house minimum even with the MDW; that thing only has a 1 in 24 chance of actually paying off anyways even if you do make it to the bonus round without hitting a Bankrupt. Go figure today had to be that one in 24, but still. I can blame Manny's nerves for not making the easy solve with over $10K in stuff (which would have made the MDW null and void anyways) and Lindsay's for her dud repeat and not even trying to get past the house minimum. Add in another horribly contrived Prize Puzzle and yeah ugly maingame. That said, what could have been is what could have been, but an awesome $100K win is still an awesome $100K win! (And I'm sure the people managing the budget for this show are glad they didn't have to pay out another $900,000 at least. ) Edit: Also, as others have mentioned, even if she had held on to the MDW in R1, the thought that a million was on the line might have altered her spin strength on the envelope spin (or any spin before then), or she might have been too nervous to stumble into the BR answer like she did. I think it's a case where we can't focus too much on the what-could-have-beens because there are too many extra factors in play.

This was...quite the interesting show.
When it comes to Emily, anything could've happened regarding that MDW. Her decision making certainly could've changed in the resulting rounds. So was she greedy? No. Did she not think about the risk she was taking? Yes.
I feel sorry for Manny, who must be a professional at stripping wheels. He just couldn't get "Fits." Which is odd. Saying "_its Like a Glove Compartment" over in your head should lead you to fits. Or maybe he had a problem with "Like"; either way I felt sorry for him.
It's always nice to play "What Clearly Transparent Puzzle Are They Going To Play Tonight" during the Prize Puzzle Round.
One other thing, is it time for Wheel's 100K wins to be like Price's DSWs in Season 39? Okay, maybe it's a little too late, but still a nice turnaround from zero wins to two in 3 days.

The first aired week is "Going Green", which happens to be third of four taped weeks (April 2). Because, you know, how dare we actually tape in airing order. Finally, Jim Thornton is doing the announcing in post-production. Okay, why? You couldn't be arsed to pay for Jim to fly to Portland, Wheel? Who announced in-studio, then? Or does it really matter, since it wasn't meant to air? I'd hate to see what happens if Jim gets sick -- they bring in someone else, then have Jim dubbed over that person to make it look like he never missed a day? Anybody know how Buzzerblog knew about BOTH 100K wins? Wario/Tris/Dylan, did any of you notify them when I told you the dates? It's OK if you did. Just wondering how they knew as well. I know I didn't. Dylan?
