We've got trips to some spa resorts; hence the name of this week is "Spa Fantasy". Let's get things going...
EPISODE #5466 - SPA FANTASY
Theme Week Tape Date: July 28, 2011
If you've been paying attention to the start of every episode this season, the words of each theme week are displayed on the scoreboards.
$1,000 Tossup - PLACE
_ T _ A M _ O _ _
There's always at least one of these at a spa, and Karla solves STEAM ROOM. Our first three solo players of the season are...
Karla Kogan: legal administrative assistant and palm reader from Prunedale, CA Katy White: SAHM and part-time barista from Fresno, CA Joel Lazaro: payroll garnishment specialist from Henderson, NV (originally from the Philippines)
$2,000 Tossup - RHYME TIME
S U P _ R - D _ _ _ R
Katy's feeling SUPER-DUPER, so she'll be spinning first tonight.
SPA TRIP ON THE WHEEL: to the Hotel Grand Bretagne in Athens, Greece courtesy of spafinder.com worth $9,370
Jackpot Round - FOOD AND DRINK
The 1/2 car plates are NOW IN PLAY, and the automobile at stake in the maingame for at least this week is a 2012 KIA Soul. Also, a flower does the revealing for each non-Tossup puzzle.
Katy picks up the berryfactory.com gift tag with an S on her second spin. Next up is a dud of O while on FP and a T for the Greece trip. After purchasing the A's...
S _ A R _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ E R A _ _ A T E R
...she solves SPARKLING MINERAL WATER for a total of $11,370 cash and prizes.
SOLE DUD: O (Katy) UNCLAIMED JACKPOT: $6,000
Pre-Round 2 Scores Karla: $1,000 Katy: $13,370 Joel: $0
========
Round 2 - SAME NAME
In the middle of the round, Karla calls a $3,500 G. She then picks up the 1/2 car plate near the Wild Card with a D. After calling an L...
M A S S A G E / A N D _ O O L _ A _ L E
...she solves MASSAGE AND POOL TABLE for $6,700.
BANKRUPT HIT: Joel ($250 loss to the MDW's left side)
(NOTES: When a player lands on a 1/2 car plate, we hear a double cark honk. Also, contrary to what I said earlier, the plates are VULNERABLE to BANKRUPTS, even after he/she solves a puzzle. Finally, a 1/2 car icon appears on the player's scoreboard when a plate is picked up.)
Pre-Round 3 Scores Karla: $7,700 + 1/2 car Katy: $13,370 Joel: $0
========
Mystery Round - FUN AND GAMES (PRIZE PUZZLE)
Karla immediately misses with R. Katy BANKRUPTS on the same side of the MDW in the last round and loses the exact same amount as Joel ($250). We get back to her after back-to-back duds by the other players. She lights up a $3,500 P and five W's while on the Mystery Wedge next to the MDW. She quickly declines an $8,500 gamble (wise move; that's the BANKRUPT one). Soon enough, we have...
P L A _ I N G B E A _ _ _ _ L L E _ B A L L
After solving this puzzle for $9,050, she'll be PLAYING BEACH VOLLEYBALL while at the Hilton Papagayo Resort & Spa in COSTA RICA worth $5,800; she wins $14,850 that round!
(NOTE: As of this week, the PP destination is displayed on-screen.)
TRIP SPIN ID: SW9289203 (Sherman W. of Virginia)
DUDS: R (Karla), D (Joel), M (Karla) BANKRUPT HIT: Katy
Pre-Tossup #3 Scores Karla: $7,700 (no more chances for her to get the other 1/2 car plate) Katy: $28,220 Joel: $0
========
$3,000 Tossup - AROUND THE HOUSE
_ I _ _ _ R E F _ A _ _ _
Karla solves PICTURE FRAMES, giving her $10,700.
Round 4 - PHRASE[/b]
T H E / R _ _ A _ T _ E A T _ E N T
Katy won't be getting THE ROYAL TREATMENT just yet, but she does win another $6,050 ($5,000 from the H) bringing her up to $34,270!
LAT HIT: Karla
Round 5 - EVENT (full $1,900 speed-up round)
B _ T T _ _ / _ _ T _ _ / B _ N _ _
Karla solves BATTLE OF THE BANDS for $3,800.
FINAL SCORES Karla: $14,500 Katy: $34,270 cash and prizes Joel: first $1K gooseegg victim of the season
TOTAL MAINGAME WINNINGS: a respectable $49,770
========
$100,000 Bonus Round The car at stake in Bonusland this week is a Mazda MX-5 Miata. Katy lands on the I in AMERICA'S.
Category: THING This is all she gets to start with...
_ _ _ _ _ L _ _
CDMA gives her...
_ A C _ _ L _ _
She only gets the first half, so she will NOT be performing a BACKFLIP worth $45,000. Her final total is $34,270 cash and prizes.

-Tossups: I got the first two fairly quickly before the ladies tried to solve.
-R1: Nice round for Katy, but she left the N's and L's unrevealed.
-R2: It would have been better had Karla say L while on $3,500.
-R3: Five L's while on a Mystery Wedge isn't so bad, but it would have been a whole lot better had Katy called them on $3,500. Nonetheless, another nice round for her.
-R5: I got it the same time as Karla.
-Bonus Round: I got it immediately after Katy's choices appeared. Too bad Katy didn't get the second half.
Overall, I thought she was a pretty good player.
EPISODE RATING: 7 out of 10

What a shame the 1/2 Car plates aren't immune to Bankrupts, even after you solve a puzzle w/ one of them.
Katy needed at least one more letter in the second half of the bonus puzzle.
Score: 7 also

This was a good show. A bit too early to pull out the compound word BR though, isn't it?
I'll let Mario describe it, but there was another triple fail tonight.
I guess the rules of the game are going to vary from week to week? Or something? And I guess we traded off triple the space for bankrupt vulnerability?

A pretty good episode to start off the week.
First Two Tossups: Got the first one the same time as Karla and got the second one just before the S popped up.
Round 1: T on cardboard strikes again! Glad there was only one, though. An okay first round, wish Katy would've gone for the multiples...
Round 2: I like the 1/2 Car graphic on the scoreboard! I wanted Karla to call the D while on $3,500.
Round 3: Well... I had this one with just the N. And I wanted Katy to pick the L on $3,500. There were two Ys, you know.
Third Tossup: Got it the same time as Karla.
Round Four and Round Five: Didn't like the four T's on $400 deal... but the first $5,000 hit of he Season was good! I got BATTLE OF THE BANDS at the same time as Karla.
Bonus Round: This may sound a little crazy, but I got the Bonus Round puzzke when Katy said BACK. I didn't know the second part or the first one, but when she said BACK, I immediately figured it out.
Episode Rating: 8/10
Overall View: A good episode to start off the week, with the $5,000 wedge getting some gameplay and a big maingame total.

TU1&2: Interesting that we have color-coded players, but nothing remarkable in the gameplay.
R1: Not quite a perfect round, but Katy gets to finish what she started thanks to Free Play. We have a BIG prize this show, and it's claimed right away. Nice cardboard efficiency - she picked up the Greece trip and gift tag each with single letters.
R2: Three interesting points to note in this round. First of all, either our taping report is incorrect or the Mystery moving to R2 happens later on - we'll have to wait and see. Second, we have the second Same Name puzzle of the season to use AND instead of &. Last, we get the first car tag hit, and it seems that $500 per letter is NOT awarded - unless this change also comes later.
R3: We've reloaded the second Kia tag, but nobody hits any more of them. It's understandable to take $5,000 rather than risk $3,500 here, and Katy wraps it up nicely after that.
TU3: Quick solve there by Karla, but she's still a long way out.
R4: Three top dollar hits tonight, but all of them only for singles. I had this pretty fast right as the first E came up.
R5(Speedup): Despite it being a speedup, it still feels good to be typing R5. However, it's not too good for Joel, who can't muster any money this game. Even though $1,900 a letter isn't bad, it's nowhere near enough for Karla to come back.
BR: Tricky puzzle and Katy needed more help here. I overthought it here and came up with BACKFLOW instead.
Overall: Decent winnings total, but nothing spectacular - 6/10.

R1: So this doesn't count as a perfect round because of the dud O, even though it didn't cost her her turn? R2: Wow, we finally got a "good" audience reaction to a spin (by "good," I mean the majority of the audience cheering for a good few seconds, not just two people going "Whoo!") Poor Joel with that Bankrupt. I thought it would stop on the million. And what's with them still using "AND" on Same Name? R3: Aww, where did the love go, audience? Though the camera angle did change way too late, so that might explain things...As Wayoshi kindly let me explain, there was a null cycle edited out at the beginning of this round. You can see the MDW approach red's flipper on the first spin, but it ends up in a completely different spot. Plus, she clearly wasn't strong enough to spin over a full rotation. Also, there were no Ts or Ss, so chances are, red guessed one of those two, the other was also guessed, plus a penalty spin. On another note, when was the last time we had the word "BEACH" used in a Prize Puzzle that wasn't fluffed with adjectives and the like? R4: I got this puzzle with just the Ts. (I have a feeling it's not going to be long before we have our first silent $5K spin. It's the sole survivor. Even the MDW suffers the same fate sometimes...) R5: "I think we have another puzzle...do we?" *puzzle reveals without warning* Funny bit. Finally our first Round 5 of the season! ;D BR: Nice to see a one-word BR so soon in the season. BGHO wouldn't have helped at all here. 1/2 Car/Kia: Well, we finally got to see the newest permanent gimmick in action. Andy, the car horn SFX was also used with last season's version, by the way. I love the graphic on the scoreboard. Too bad that they're now vulnerable to Bankrupts at all times, though. So, based on what we've seen and what Pat explained, here's what we know for the new 1/2 Car tags: - Available in Rounds 1-3 only. - You can land anywhere on the wedge to have the chance to pick it up. - $500 per letter is NOT awarded with the tag when picked up (I checked carefully for this. Her score was the same both before and after picking up the tag.). - The tags are vulnerable to Bankrupts at ALL TIMES, not just the same round in which they're picked up. - Any time a tag is picked up, it is replaced with a new one the following round (unless it's R4) regardless of what happens to it. - After picking up the second tag, you must solve the puzzle that round to win the car. Here are the most important things we still need to know: - What happens if one picks up a tag but does not solve the puzzle. Do they still keep it or do they lose it? - What happens if one picks up a second tag but does not solve the puzzle, opposite to what Pat said? Would they lose both tags? Just one? None? "Driving with 1/2 a car is illegal in the state of California." LOL A much more entertaining episode with a much better audience, at least in the beginning (but thanks for actually groaning this time when the BR was revealed so they didn't have to dub in a fake one like they usually do), a lot more gameplay, including our first 5th round, and an actually entertaining contestant interview portion for once.

R1: So this doesn't count as a perfect round because of the dud O, even though it didn't cost her her turn? Andy, the car horn SFX was also used with last season's version, by the way. For the first part...yes, it doesn't count as a perfect round since Katy made an error. Second, thanks for the info on the SFX.

R1: So this doesn't count as a perfect round because of the dud O, even though it didn't cost her her turn? That's how WOFTracker should work, I think - 1 lost turn in R1, but 1 saved turn on Free Play. I'll double-check today that it works out that way. Fixed mangled quote.

How great to finally see the 1/2 CAR debut! And Pat said it would be around for the rest of the season, so as I thought, it won't be in only some weeks! Here's what I have to say about it, plus the responses to what you all have to say: So, based on what we've seen and what Pat explained, here's what we know for the new 1/2 Car tags: - Available in Rounds 1-3 only. - You can land anywhere on the wedge to have the chance to pick it up. - $500 per letter is NOT awarded with the tag when picked up (I checked carefully for this. Her score was the same both before and after picking up the tag.). That's not surprising, since except in Seasons 25 and 26 with the Free Spin, that's never happened with any wedge. I was surprised when all of you thought it. - The tags are vulnerable to Bankrupts at ALL TIMES, not just the same round in which they're picked up. In a way, not surprising, since that's also the case with the MDW and WC (although never the Free Spin when it was still around). Though I'm guessing that's not the case with the full car when it's won. I thought I heard they do, but I'm not sure. - What happens if one picks up a second tag but does not solve the puzzle, opposite to what Pat said? Would they lose both tags? Just one? None? I think definitely for the second tag, they definitely have to solve the puzzle they land on, since that makes it like every other prize except the WC. And other very important questions: Pat did make it clear that after the starts of R2 and 3, there are always both wedges on the wheel, regardless of what happens in R1. But that's really what leads to other questions -- can more than one contestant win a car? Or for other contestants, is it treated like a regular $500 space? Because interestingly, Pat said at the start of R3 that Karla has more chances to win, not all three contestants. And if all three contestants do have a chance to win a car, I wonder if by any chance in R3, if two different contestants have a 1/2 CAR wedge, the second contestant doesn't pick it up and it's treated like a $500 space. Also, I LOVE the horn sound when it's picked up! And I love that the 1/2 CAR image is on the scoreboards! It took me a while to figure out that it was a scoreboard image, since it looked like a piece of cardboard that was put alongside the wedge. But then I realized it when I saw it immediately after Karla picked up the KIA tag and put it on the ledge the same way one would any other piece of cardboard. Also, it was surprising that that the Mystery Round didn't move to R2 as was said to have happen. When it didn't happen in the premiere, I thought the reason for it had to do with the 1/2 CAR, but obviously not! I wonder really if it will happen. I was told it would happen during Fun & Fit, as I believe I heard it from joacen who was at the taping for the first three shows that week. I'm guessing maybe that'll debut Tuesday, November 1 when that four-episode week starts (or maybe on Halloween the day before or the start of Halloween week the week before). If so, I wonder if just maybe the first America's Game will have the Mystery Round where it is now, as that decision could have been made between the tapings of Desert Hideaways and Fun & Fit (I know that Halloween was taped out of order the day before last week did). But I doubt that, and like the 1/2 CAR, they knew just when, not in the season premiere, when that would start. Or is it remotely possible that joacen remembers this wrong?

I wonder if they're permanently reverting to spelling out AND in Same Name puzzles? IIRC this is the third or fourth one in a row.
