Harry Friedman becoming the executive producer of Wheel of Fortune is seen by many as the start of Wheel's downturn, but I think it's far from fair to say that everything he did is wrong. So I made this thread to get people's opinion on what he changed that people actually LIKE about the show. Here's my personal list: - Switching out the trilon puzzle board for an electronic one in 1997. The arched borders from the four-line trilon board were very nice, but monitors makes not just Vanna's, but everyone's life easier.
- From earlier that season, the Jackpot wedge. At six years old, I thought it was a good concept when it was introduced, and I still think so now. And to the naysayers that say it encourages solving the puzzle more than picking good letters: The show's been doing that since day one in 1975 by not allowing contestants who don't solve the puzzle to keep what they've gotten from the wheel.
- The $1,000,000 wedge/bonus round. I wouldn't change a thing about it.
What changes did Harry Friedman make that you think make Wheel better?

-Removing the trilon board for the touch screen board. -Jackpot/Mystery/Wild Card. -The $100,000 Bonus Round, not that horrid $1,000,000 Bonus Round that never should have even been a snippet of the imagination.

I agree with the electronic board.
I also enjoy the Toss-Ups, because they mean more puzzles per show, and they help in balancing the game. Previously, the red player would always have a slight advantage because they'd pretty much be guaranteed to start 2 rounds.

I like the $1m bonus round twist too; but I say either treat it like the Wild Card, 1/2 Car, or even both. (However, every time I say this, I get the same reply: "That's too easy!")

- Toss Ups, even though those were Pat's idea.
- The Bonus Wheel format.
- Changing the Mystery Wedge's face value to $1,000.
- Changing the color scheme of the Wheel to what we have now. (Probably the change I appreciate the most. The one before it looked hideous.)
- The current top dollar value wedges, finally matching in font with the rest of the Wheel and looking much better overall.
- Awarding $500 per letter with the Jackpot, $300 with the Free Spin, $500 with the gift tag/Wild Card.
- Making the puzzle board monitors flat-screened.
- Separating the vowels from the consonants on the Used Letter Board.
- Awarding $5,000 cash with the Bonus Round cars.
- Moving the Mystery Round to R2 and fixing the PP to R3 instead of randomizing it between R2-3 and strangely having the "Wheel gimmick-less" round in the middle of the maingame.
- Replacing the flashing arrows on the scoreboards with flashing bars for S30.
- The new timer graphic for the Bonus Round.
- Having the 1/2 Car vary and sometimes having it on the set.
- Finally balancing the value arrangement better for S30, including bringing back $650 and $700 and resolving the "triple $500" in R1.

Let's see..what about the contestants' names on the monitors, just like early Season 25? Was that good or was that bad?
As for the puzzle board, they could start using HD monitors like Jeopardy!'s board. We're broadcasting in HD now, we need an HD board.

I thought the monitors on the puzzle board were already in HD...I know they were made flat-screen in Season 25 or 26...

Don't HD's usually have a 16:9 aspect ratio, though? The monitors on the show look a lot like they have a 4:3 aspect ratio.

I believe the monitors are actually turned sideways, and yes, they were changed to flat-screens starting in S25.

"High-definition" means the video size is bigger than "standard-definition." It has nothing to do with the aspect ratio, even though most things made HD are 16:9 and most things in SD are 4:3. I think you're thinking of a widescreen TV.
