IMO, Michele was not that great of a player thanks to getting ahead of herself quite a few times. Tossups: Great job by Michele on sweeping the Tossups. R1: Bad repeat by Michele. And she should've went for those D's. R2: Where did Kelly think the C would go? BIC?  R3: Good round for Jonathan despite that C goof... R4: What a pity for Kelly to not win something... Bonus Round: IMO, the producers were aiming for a win, but it just didn't happen, and Kelly failed miserably. I had that w/ the RSTLNE.

All three TUs are things not in my vocabulary. Oddly, only 2 of the 3 were due to being fitness themed.
Had the BR from RSTLNE. Figures she picks the only dud vowel. This one was easier than the last time they used PREVIOUS in a puzzle — it was PREVIOUS PAGE, and I was aghast when Pat said, "Well, it isn't PRECIOUS anything" because I had literally no clue what else would fit.

R1: A non-FP vowel call after spinning? At least they left it in this time, but I didn't think she'd get another chance. LOL at Pat's "most undeserving win of the season" remark.  R2: Yet again, FP is mis-used (for the sure Y's instead of the unsure C)... R3: Finally, a PP that's not Phrase and isn't contrived, and FP is actually used successfully here. Good for Jon. R4: I got this with no letters. It seems like Proper Name is used more for sports teams than anything else nowadays. They might as well make it its own category now... BR: Pretty easy with just RSTLNE. P probably would have done it for her. I am getting really sick of all these themed puzzles. The PP was actually one of the most tolerable tonight... Is it me or was $3500 on the Wheel during the BR? I don't see why it would be, but the top dollar wedge seemed purple to me... I think R4 would have been a modern record for most duds in Speed-Up (8!)...if they didn't insist on editing it! I can never watch Speed-Ups the same anymore since I know we'll never see more than two consecutive duds again... No "reaction" shot for a $3500 hit? Interesting. Yet again, no audience reaction, and then a loud fake groan dubbed in. I guess they're going to do that for all top dollar duds now... There is some controversy on the Facebook page that Pat shouldn't have "coaxed" her into winning. I think it was a fine move. I mean, you are supposed to call a letter first. People did that all the time at my Wheelmobile event and the traveling Pat did the same thing. As for Michele, well...she was no Lowenstein. I'll put it at that...Maybe she should have actually watched the show... Rating: 2/5

This was a game of hot potato... a bunch of odd things. -2k/R1: I think this was just nerves... also, for me with WOFTracker this felt quite a bit meta. -R2: BIC? BRACNY? She must have been completely lost and was guessing... I may have understood BRAWNY, but BIG? Chalk this up to the stage I guess... -R3: 4 S's / PP, blah blah blah is already meh... how'd he piece it together during the small dead time on the Free Play dud? It was kinda bizarre. And now the big one, R4... Pat basically directly decided this game with this, and once again, Pat is not very consistent on when he reminds or doesn't remind, so I'm not sure how I feel about this. If someone immediately solves in this situation, he has to take it, but if someone asks, he probably does remind, but there's no set guideline or rule he has to follow, so... it's a very interesting situation here. That said, how did Jonathan, a guy, still not quite know it? As for the BR... who would have thought the trap P & I were the most helpful in the top word? I thought based on those calls she was being smart, but perhaps that was just default spewing and she didn't even know the bottom at the time like she should have... An odd but ultimately fairly subpar affair today. EDIT: PRECIOUS EXPERIENCE would have been aiming for a win. This was middle ground. |

R4: Poor Kelly on being the first gooseegger of the season. She built up a pretty good bank, too.

I'd say this episode was about average.

Blegh! Nasty episode tonight! All three had their misfortune in some way tonight. Kelly was our first shut-out all season, Jonathan couldn't quite get the Phillies to clinch the game (like the White Sox couldn't clinch the playoffs either), and Michele was our first $50,000 non-winner of the season. At least it wasn't the $100,000. Superstitiously, this should've been tomorrow for two reasons. One, tomorrow's the 13th episode of the season. Two, tomorrow is also the 3rd day of the 10th month. 3 + 10 = 13. Now for my personal input. I did think it was Precious myself, but then I was able to get Previous. As for the retro puzzle, there was not a chance I was going to get Kickboxing, at least not with those letters. Even so, rough night.  At least the Kickboxing puzzle was the saving grace.  |

Everyone is saying Pat gave Michele the victory by not allowing her to solve immediately during the speed up round. I'm not so sure about this. Unless I counted wrong Michele trailed Jonathan by $970. Even if she solves immediately with no cash showing would not the minimum of $1000 apply giving her a $30 victory.
In any case I wish Pat would have let her drowned in her misery.
Am I correct in my assessment? Anyone?

^Yes, that's correct. So in essence, Pat was spending company money, which I'm sure Friedman got onto him for doing. Aside from that, the Round 2 puzzle feels inflated, and the Bonus Round really shouldn't have been lost. Of course, once it's lost then the $50,000 comes out... Well, Kelly made the Speed-Up more interesting pretty quickly & if she had called one more correct consonant & solved, she would've stolen the game away from Michele. Michele was as anxious as I am in life.
Too bad quite a few of us (including both Michele & I) got duped on the bonus puzzle because of the V trap; maybe having the P's & the I's up there might've finished the job.

That would've restricted it to the Winter months, but the lack of them does help remove said months (although I don't know whether they used the Winter decorations for 1985-86). Well, it's definitely the Round 2 Prize, otherwise they wouldn't have used the Helvetica chyron. Did you find the clip online, perchance? |

They also showed SILENT BUTLER'S TARGETS when they did the classic clips in S25 (likewise, many of the others on the WWC page, such as him quoting the SpongeBob theme). Maybe it'll show up again. Now I'm curious as to what clip would have to show up to be total and undeniable proof of this -- something the Wiki has access to that isn't anywhere else, or something to that effect. The fact that they've dug up some impressive gets for the retro BR (e.g., JAWS with only the S, or this episode's KICKBOXING) is a start. |

I was thinking of a more orthodox exercise machine. Regardless, the value chyron somewhat resembles the second Helvetica category chyrons (the ones used in February-March '85), but that might not mean anything. ==== Speaking of classic clips, I missed the MOLECULE Bonus Round clip from 1989 (aired back on September 18) and it's not in TPH or Guint's puzzle archives. Mainly, I'm curious as to which end of the year it was (old or new timer, buzzer, nametag, and backdrops. If the player's letter choices were black, it's no earlier than October 16). I could do some needle-in-a-haystack searching through my video archives, but I'd rather have something to narrow it down before diving in there. |
