Evening Wheel Watchers! Scott here, back after a long absence from the recap scene. I've been busy completing my master's degree and finding a job teaching mathematics at the local university, so it's only fitting that I get to lead off the recapping of Teachers Week.
EPISODE #5681 - TEACHERS WEEK
THIS WEEK'S TAPEDATE: August 10, 2012
THIS WEEK'S CATEGORY WIPE: School bus, driving right to left, pausing in the middle
TONIGHT'S FLASHBACK CLIP: "AN UGLY CHILD" mis-solve from Season 19
==============================================================
$1,000 TOSS-UP - PHRASE:
R _ I _ _ / _ _ _ R
_ _ N _
Red player Jessi says RAISE YOUR HAND, and by doing so, raises her score to $1,000!
==============================================================
CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS:
Jessi Pierson is a first-grade teacher at Salt Rock Elementary. She lives in nearby Ona, West Virginia with her best friend (and new fiancee) Ben. Jessi enjoys a lot of time outdoors fishing, hunting, and hiking with avid fisherman Ben. She's also the former Miss West Virginia from 2009!
Peter Gabriele comes to us from Mantua, New Jersey and teaches 11th-grade American history at Frankford High School in Philadelphia. He and his wife, Danielle, have an energetic 2-year-old son named Luke.
Earlene Pearson hails from Jensen Beach, Florida. She's a special-ed teacher and drama director at Martin County High in Stuart, Florida (and has been teaching for over 30 years!). She's married to the "amazing" Tip Pearson, and they have two children (Travis and Kendra), two stepdaughters (Farrah and Nicole), and five grandchildren.
==============================================================
$2,000 TOSS-UP - TITLES:
T _ E / I L _ _ D / _ N D
T H _ / _ D _ _ _ _ _
Drama director Earlene knows THE ILIAD AND THE ODYSSEY, claiming $2,000 and rights to Round 1!
==============================================================
TONIGHT'S FEATURED PRIZE: NETC tour of Peru (from WorldStrides) - $7,800
ROUND 1 (JACKPOT ROUND) - EVENT:
The Jackpot operator falls asleep on us in this round, so let's track it one spin at a time. Earlene opens with triple T's on $350 (but the Jackpot only goes to $5,300). She follows that with a pair of H's on $700, then buys triple E's and I's. She then clears the Bankrupt near top collar to the orange $300 and finds an N (but the Jackpot stays on $6,000), then hits $300 again for a G. She'll buy a pair of A's, then spin up $900 for a trio of F's...
F _ _ _ / F I G H T / I N
T H E / _ A F E T E _ I A
Earlene has probably had to break up many a FOOD FIGHT IN THE CAFETERIA, and she builds her lead with $5,000 in cash!
PERFECT ROUND!
Unclaimed Jackpot: aired as $7,200, should be $7,550
PRE-R2 SCORES:
Jessi - $1,000
Peter - $0
Earlene - $7,000
==============================================================
ROUND 2 (MYSTERY ROUND) - SAME LETTER:
Jessi gets to kick off the Mystery round, and spins up the $400, but the T is a dud. Peter takes over the wheel, getting two R's for $550 each before buying a full house of vowels - a pair of E's and three of a kind A's. With $600 left, he hits the Mystery wedge by the MDW and finds an S. He'll decline the $1,000 bribe and flip it to find... BANKRUPT. Earlene will get $500 for the C via Free Play, but Bankrupts that right back near the top dollar wedge. Jessi finds the F's that make up the Same Letter - three of them at $900 apiece - but then Bankrupts down by Free Play and gives up her $2,700. Peter FP's the trio of I's, then grabs $650 for the N and $900 each for a couple L's...
F R I E N _ L _
F A _ I L I A R
F A C E S
Peter's class is a bunch of FRIENDLY FAMILIAR FACES to him, and they're good for $2,450!
Sole Dud: T (Jessi)
Bankrupt: Everybody (Peter on the Mystery flipside, loses $600 - Earlene $500 - Jessi $2,700)
PRE-R3 SCORES:
Jessi - $1,000
Peter - $2,450
Earlene - $7,000
RETRO BONUS ROUND - EVENT:
_ L _ - _ I S _ I N G
With RSTLNE and GIPC to help her, the contestant from 2001 successfully solves FLY-FISHING!
==============================================================
ROUND 3 (PRIZE PUZZLE ROUND) - PLACE:
Peter takes the first spin this time, hitting the 1/2 Car near Lose a Turn (this week, it's the Smart Car) and picking it up with an N. However, he only has half a car and no turn after the wicked white wedge hits him. Earlene hits $900 for the T but throws good money after a bad vowel when the E turns dud. Jessi picks up the gift tag ($1,000 cash from Pilot Pen) with the R. She adds $450 each for a couple of L's before buying out all the vowels - three A's, three I's, and two O's. Here comes a solve...
T R O _ I _ A _
I _ L A N _
O A _ I _
The TROPICAL ISLAND OASIS Jessi will be visiting is ANTIGUA! That trip will have her staying at the St. James's Club and is valued at $7,140 - when we add the $1,650 she picked up in-round, Jessi just cashed in $9,790 worth of chips!
Sole Dud: E (Earlene)
Lose a Turn: Peter
Retired Banks: $1,150 and a car tag ($500 and the tag from Peter, $650 from Earlene)
PRE-TU3 SCORES:
Jessi - $10,790 cash and trip
Peter - $2,450
Earlene - $7,000
=============================================================
$3,000 TOSS-UP - FICTIONAL CHARACTER:
_ H _ / S I _ V E R
S _ R F E _
Peter calls upon THE SILVER SURFER to boost his score to $5,450!
=============================================================
ROUND 4 (PARTIAL SPEEDUP) - WHAT ARE YOU DOING?:
Peter begins with a quick grand for two N's. He suceeds in finding an I, but loses his turn on the bad O. Earlene tallies $800 for a pair of G's before the bells go off.
FINAL SPIN RESULT: $600 ($1,600)
Earlene can't pick up any more cash just yet as she duds the L. Jessi gets a T but has no guess, but her opponents both do. Peter puts up two S's but TAKING AN ESTIMATED GUESS is too long for the board. Earlene goes for vowels with a couple U's, but TAKING AN EDUCATED GUESS is still wrong. Jessi doubles down on D's...
_ _ _ I N G / _ N
_ D U _ _ T _ D / G U _ S S
and she rakes in $4,800 for being first to the correct answer, MAKING AN EDUCATED GUESS!
Duds: O (Peter), L (Earlene)
Retired Banks: $4,250 ($3,450 from Peter, $800 from Earlene)
Missed Solves: Peter's TAKING AN ESTIMATED GUESS, Earlene's TAKING AN EDUCATED GUESS
FINAL SCORES:
Jessi - $14,590 cash and trip
Peter - $5,450
Earlene - $7,000
MAINGAME WINNINGS: $27,040
============================================================
$100,000 BONUS ROUND - THING:
This week's featured bonus car is a Ford Mustang. Jessi lands on the I in AMERICA'S. RSTLNE gives us three letters to begin:
S _ _ R _
_ _ _ _ E
Jessi calls on CDHA for help and gets three of them...
S H A R _
_ _ A _ E
Jessi tries hard to find the answer, but SHARP PENCIL and SHARP MIND don't fit and SHARP SHAVE is clearly not right either. We were actually looking for SHARP IMAGE, and that would've given Jessi $45,000 in bonus cash. Instead, she leaves us with just $14,590 in cash and trip.
