Jenna, another question if you don't mind, though not about this episode...I hate to bring this up here again, but, seeing that you taped the same day as the episode with the "SEVEN SWANS A-SWIMMING" puzzle, was there any kind of hoopla backstage or in the audience or green room about the ruling? In my own personal opinion, so take it however you will, I agree with how it played out. You can tell Renee knew what she did, so she was intelligent enough to realize that she needed to say "-ing" and not "-in'." In addition, they go over everything extensively backstage before the show and send you the rules before you even come to L.A. They're clear about the fact that you have to read it as it is on the board ... if they wanted her to say "swimmin'" it would have had an apostrophe there. In addition, so many people were attacking Pat on Facebook and elsewhere for that, but it's not Pat's fault. He's not the judge. There was a woman at the show who is from an outside company that makes sure everything is politically correct (for lack of better words) ... she makes sure there's no cheating, etc. I believe she was involved in the decision process, I'm pretty sure, and I stand by their decision. In the audience, we didn't really feel that Renee was cheated -- we felt bad for her misfortune -- be we knew she had to read it as is. What I think is more unfair is earlier that week ... Hannah was robbed when Fedrecia has three chances to read the puzzle correctly. That was what we were all talking about in the audience! Similarly, Jenna -- given that it was also taped the same day, in fact right after the above incident -- was there any hoopla about the "HICKORY-SMOKE(D) COUNTRY HAM" ruling (the one nearly everybody in the media failed to notice)? By all indications, the contestant left off the D but they still ruled him correct. So, switching over to this one. There wasn't any fuss about this, because I don't think anyone realized at the time that he didn't say the "D." After hearing it on TV, though, I don't think he should've gotten it! Nice R1 Jackpot win. And a Prize Puzzle Phrase that was not related to traveling at all? (Well, maybe one could argue that a vacation is "exactly what the doctor ordered", but still, that could have easily been used as a non-PP puzzle!) Haha, my thoughts exactly. I was so bummed that I had a good chance to go to Maui until I asked for an "N." I was thinking "beaches, swimming, sunscreen, pineapples, etc." in my head ... what is usually up there for these puzzles -- not doctors. Oh well, I watched a 'What are you doing?' puzzle the other day that didn't have -ing in it. It happens!

I think the "Oh Crap" moment was the show just being cute. I think they wanted to make a funny moment so they put the buzzer in. On top of that, Pat was the one who said they bleeped it out. I don't know if someone quickly told him from offstage that they were going to bleep it out, but if not and he made that comment on his own, he kind of put the show in the position where they were going to have to do something. I thought it was really cool of them to use the buzzer. That topped off the humor of the moment.

JJ: Did you see Pat's reaction when the word was uttered? I think he knew what was coming, and the addition of the buzzer was hilarious. Keep in mind, he's seen and heard it all in the 31+ years he's been at the railing.
Jenna: I totally agree with you on Renee's incident. I only wonder how she felt backstage. The virulent messages being posted on Facebook and the public outcry on the news is unjust. It seems to me that Renee knew what she did and got too excited. I can also vouch for the fact that we went over the rules and several sample puzzles in exhaustive detail to make sure we understood that the puzzle needed to be solved AS WRITTEN.
The woman you were referring to as being from an outside agency is a COMPLIANCE OFFICIAL. She's the "lawyer" who makes sure everything is conducted on the up-and-up. I remember her distinctly for two reasons: one, our tape day was her birthday, and the contestant coordinators made a major point of that. Two, she mistakenly referred to the "lady who won a million dollars" as "Monica Lewinsky"!

So, switching over to this one. There wasn't any fuss about this, because I don't think anyone realized at the time that he didn't say the "D." After hearing it on TV, though, I don't think he should've gotten it! As I said, the media (with about one or two minor exceptions) completely ignored this one. What I think is more unfair is earlier that week ... Hannah was robbed when Fedrecia has three chances to read the puzzle correctly. That was what we were all talking about in the audience! ...and this. I was so bummed that I had a good chance to go to Maui until I asked for an "N." I was thinking "beaches, swimming, sunscreen, pineapples, etc." in my head ... what is usually up there for these puzzles -- not doctors. Wheel either uses blatantly tropical/snow-based puzzles, phrases nobody ever says ("I LOVE MY PASSPORT PHOTO", "I WONDER HOW MANY VACATION DAYS I HAVE?", "WHERE DO I PICK UP MY SKI-LIFT TICKETS?"), or stuff obviously lifted from vacation brochures. Very rarely, they use something that makes sense. I think the "Oh Crap" moment was the show just being cute. Trying to be "cute" usually backfires, as it did in this case. I think they wanted to make a funny moment so they put the buzzer in. So... Wheel manufactured a "funny" moment instead of letting the funny happen naturally? Just like a primetime game show!

Ha, don't get me started on that. My mom, "had a confession" when she talked to me on Monday. She contacted the local news station that airs Wheel of Fortune and sent them the photo of my dog and me. *Total embarrassment* On another note, though, my note card about myself had more information about how I'm originally from Michigan, but after Pat said, "Well, aren't we all at heart," when I mentioned my dog was a Cavachon, I think he decided to just end the conversation there.
