Hey everybody, I'm hoping to cram as much knowledge as I can in the next week before I go on my audition. I was on WWTBAM in 2009 and won three games of Jeopardy in 2011. The Wheelmobile came to my neck of the woods (Baltimore) last year, so I figured I'd give it a try. I couldn't make the auditions, but I sent in a video and promptly forgot about it.
Last week I got an e-mail that invited me to the second audition. Now I'm in full panic mode. I googled "TenPoundHammer wheel message board" to find this place, knowing him from the J! forum and that anyone he was involved in must be the place to be.
I've already gleaned from here that BGHO is the way to go with the Bonus Round puzzle. I'll update you all next week and let you know how it went!

Welcome! (And thanks for indirectly leading her here, TPH) Checking your games on J! Archive, I see you've won $105,203 over the course of 4 days. Major congrats! How did you do on Millionaire? Don't panic. The second audition is very fun. Just always smile and clap (don't stop, or it might cost you), call your letters and solve puzzles clearly and without hesitating, and use logical letters and strategies. Also, if they perceive a letter that's different from the one you called, DO NOT correct them. I did that at my audition (said T, they heard Z, which was still up there) and I think it may have cost me becoming a contestant, so wait for the room's applause to die down before your call. Any other questions or advice, just ask. There are plenty of other members here that can help. Oh, and I like your avatar. Did you make it?

My avatar was made by a friend on the WWTBAMBored, LittleBeast 13, or rather I should say Evil Squirrel. evilsquirrelsnest.com/I won $16,000 on Millionaire, done in by an art question about Gustav Klimt. GUSTAAAAAV!

Welcome! Just go in and have a great time with your audition! Keep smiling, clapping, cheering, and just play the game logically and clearly. In the SPINNING STORIES section, see my detailed story on how I made it to the show. Here are a couple of other tips.
- Be a good sport, as well as a good player. Cheer on the other auditioners, addressing them by name if you can. - Think TWO moves ahead, not just one. Be ready to change your moves if a letter appears where you didn't expect it. - Look at the contestant coordinators right in the eyes so they can see your lips moving when you call a letter. If they get confused, don't correct them, but you may want to say something like "T as in Thomas" as a preventive measure. Just make sure the "as in" word doesn't appear in the puzzle! - Be ready to react to either Bankrupt, Lose a Turn, or $5,000. They will nail everyone at least once. - Make yourself stand out in your interview. Even if you think something about you is ordinary, you can make it extraordinary.

So I had my audition yesterday, I think it went fairly well. They are auditioning more people today, they said.
At 3:30 the doors opened at the hotel conference room in Baltimore. There were about 50 people in our group, some from the Wheelmobile event in October, and some from the "Face of the Fan" video entry that I did. We all got called to stand up where we were and call letters for the puzzle on the overhead screen. I was complimented by Jackie on my loud, clear voice, and I solved my puzzle and won a tote bag. I was surprised by how many people still called letters that had already been called or didn't speak up at this audition.
The test was hard! I got nine right out of fifteen, and partially completed a few more. I missed them looking for 30-year-olds by one year, darn it. The hotel had provided us with pitchers of water and mints in the back of the room, which was a nice touch.
20 people passed the test and went to the next round, including me! I was in a smart row, the two people next to me also passed. Then we got to go up and play the game again, this time introducing ourselves and giving a short bio and any interesting hobbies. We spun an imaginary wheel while Jackie spun the portable one. I solved another puzzle that round.
After that, they went into the back room, then came back and called five people to play the game again. I don't know if that means I'm already out, or they just were on the fence about those five. They said we'll get a letter in the mail in two weeks if we made it. We were out of there at 6 p.m., into a torrential downpour. I lost one of my windshield wipers on the way home and had to keep craning my neck around to the side of the windshield that was clear, but it was worth it!
And now I wait.

Good luck! I was part of that final five group. Pretty sure they're "on the fence" about them. I didn't get my letter. Sanam (wheelbaby) was also part of that group, but did appear on the show this past September.

Congratulations to you, too! Looks like you did a strong enough job with your presence and solving skills. Was the test harder than you thought? I can't believe I managed to nail 13 puzzles myself (and I figured out a 14th one in the bathroom of the Knoxville Public Library)! I think Mario is right...those five others you mentioned were likely those they were "on the fence" about. I don't remember any of us having to play again once we got to the "serious" part.
One more thing...remember Jackie's face and voice. Once you get to Stage 11, she'll be one of the four contestant coordinators who'll comprise your "fight team." They give great advice and are the nicest people you'll ever meet. At the same time, though, Jackie can be like a shark. Her favorite expressions: "WATCH THAT USED LETTER BOARD!" and "LOUDER!" But, she does that to everyone and you wind up loving her in the end. Keep us posted, and watch the mailbox VERY carefully.

All my friends assumed I would do great on the test since I'm a Jeopardy champion, but the shows have a different set of skills involved for sure. My husband is much better at solving WOF puzzles but the great tragedy is the world will never know because he's so soft-spoken they would never pick him. I was very nervous about how I'd do on the test. So in the past week I played the WOF game on facebook and tried to solve all the puzzles after I only had one or two letters. That seemed to help calm me down. Does anyone know what the passing grade is supposed to be? One of the women I hung out with before the doors opened said she got "about half" right and she wasn't asked to stay. I wonder if I just passed.

I don't know if there's a passing grade. They probably just see how you do in comparison to the others, and they also take your contestant skills (enunciation, enthusiasm, etc.) into consideration when deciding if you stay or leave. Did they tell you how you did on the test? They didn't at mine. We were just limited to discussing it with others during the break afterwards.

They never reveal the official cutoff, but my personal goal was 12. If you have a great presence and can play the game well under pressure, you stand a good chance to advance in the selection process. The test for Wheel is way harder than the test for Jeopardy, which I've taken twice. You've got to manage 16 puzzles all at once in 5 minutes. That's 18 seconds per puzzle. Since I'm a test prep instructor, I was able to "practice what I preach" and used some great time management strategies to do very well on the test. I also paid very close attention to the instructions that the coordinators gave and did a brief rundown in my head of which puzzles to solve first, since they told the categories in advance.

No, they didn't tell us our score, I just looked up, saw I had six seconds left, and decided to count and see how many I had with my remaining time. Probably not the best use of my time, but I was pretty stuck at that point.

I've already gleaned from here that BGHO is the way to go with the Bonus Round puzzle. I'll update you all next week and let you know how it went! As someone also pretty new, I have a question about this for everyone? Are "BGHO", the consensus picks for the Bonus round?

I'm butting in here, sorry! I'm new and just wanted to say that I was at the Baltimore auditions yesterday. I made it through to the end as well, so I'd love to get updates if you receive a letter or a phone call! In my audition, at the end, they had 4 men come up and play a second time. They then asked if any of the men there would NOT be able to come to a taping next week. Obviously, no one raised their hands. The coordinators left the room for 2 minutes, came back, and told 3 of the guys that they were heading to LA next week to do a taping! Craziness! They were so excited!
Anyway, it was a great experience. I did as well as I could do, I think, so I have to be okay with that and just hope for the best! Good luck to you!! I hope you get good news in the next couple of weeks!

As someone also pretty new, I have a question about this for everyone? Are "BGHO", the consensus picks for the Bonus round? It tends to be that way. Over the last few years, calling BGHO tends to make more letters appear than CDMA, which was the "magic combo" for most of the '90s. In fact, it worked out for me last night when I was playing a Wheel video game. I never would've solved BUDDY HOLLY if I had called CDMA. There will, of course, always be some differences, but BGHO has tended to work out better than CDMA. Some people have also suggested that FGHI works pretty well, too.

My husband is much better at solving WOF puzzles but the great tragedy is the world will never know because he's so soft-spoken they would never pick him. Which is a shame. A lot of game shows seem to look for personality, quirks, and volume over smarts. Pretty much every primetime network game since 2005 has done that. Okay, is it wrong that this whole thing made me think of Nancy Jones? As someone also pretty new, I have a question about this for everyone? Are "BGHO", the consensus picks for the Bonus round? It tends to be that way. Over the last few years, calling BGHO tends to make more letters appear than CDMA, which was the "magic combo" for most of the '90s. ... There will, of course, always be some differences, but BGHO has tended to work out better than CDMA. Some people have also suggested that FGHI works pretty well, too. To add to that: if you have a Wild Card in the Bonus Round, the best choice is C. Speaking of old strategies, RSTLNE was the magic combo from 1981-88 and pretty much became a running gag by about '86, so they changed it to the current setup a month into Season 6. Before all that, in 1975-76 and '78, it seems RSTNE worked well on Easy and Medium puzzles but less so on Hard and Difficult ones. Of course, it's only a matter of time before Wheel wises up to the BGHO (and possibly FGHI) strategy/ies as well, at which point the only things left would generally be DPG "doubler" puzzles and things that get less than 10,000 hits on Google.
