What if in the not-too-distant future, a new producer (say it was one of us) took over on Wheel and starting changing some things back to the way they used to be. Say they got rid of the Prize Puzzle, The Mystery Round, The Gift Tags, Free Play, ect; and other things that most hardcore fans don't like, and bringing back Free Spin and Surprise.
What if some other changes were made that would look to the non-casual fan to be cheap, but it's actually balancing the budget somewhat. Things like raising vowels to $500, reducing the round minimum to $500, changing the prize wedges to "the grand old way," as Guint calls it, and making the TDVs $1000-$2500-$3500-$5000 but increasing the overall value of the wheel and bringing back $1500 and $2000.
Bottom line, it would feel like classic 80s and 90s Wheel, which would be a gift from God to the hardcore fans. But how do you think that would sit with the non-hardcore fans? I know that a big chunk of them probably wouldn't even notice, but big changes like that don't go unnoticed by too many people.

Honestly, in 2013 dollars, the top dollar values are fine. There definitely needs to be a significant boost in all of the "smaller" wedges, including more four digit amounts being put on the wheel. The price of vowels definitely needs an increase to reflect this.
Despite that, I definitely support a return to "earning" your winnings, so to say. No more house minimums, no more free prizes for solving a puzzle which only rewards conservative players, no more luck-based prizes. That being said, there is room for some of the "modern" aspects of the show. I have no problem with the Toss-ups in principle, though I find the first one to be incredibly awkward, since it doesn't really do anything other than give a free $1000 to whoever rings in the fastest. As for the Prize Puzzle, I wouldn't mind it so much if it (a) offered significantly cheaper prizes, and (b) included the prize as a "bonus", and didn't include the value in the player's score (which would, in turn, encourage players to take some risks during that round).

While I disagree with some of the changes post-1995 or so, we don't really need to be turning back the clock all that much. At most, what I'd undo is the video wall, the second pre-Round 1 tossup, the second Bankrupt in Round 1, and the prize puzzle. I think getting rid of those would be realistic reversions. As for the layouts, I'd say this wouldn't be a bad compromise between the single- and multi-template layouts: - In Round 1, replace the Bankrupt next to $2,500 with $750 and the blue $300 with $1,000.
- In Round 2, additionally replace the orange $300 with Bankrupt, $350 with $1,250, and the blue $700 with $1,000.
- In Round 3, additionally replace $3,500 with $5,000, $400 with $1,500, and $450 with $2,000.

I believe that they should only do one pre round 1 toss-up for $1500. This would eliminate what i consider an unnecessary toss-up. Round 1: Jackpot round with wheel values from $500-1000 ($2500 top dollar)(also prize added but not always a trip) Round 2: Mystery Round with same wheel values except one $500 space becomes $3500 which is top dollar amount Round 3: Regular round with same wheel configuration as round 2 but with another $500 becoming $5000 (top dollar) Toss-Up before round 4 is worth its regular $3000 Round 4+: Regular round with round 3 wheel configuration except you take away another low amount and add a $1500 space.
When it comes to the prize puzzle go back to where it could be in round 1,2, or 3. This will keep the game more fair in my opinion. Since we don't know what round it will be in there is less strategy involved. Also I agree with an earlier suggestion and make it bonus money that doesn't actually go towards score that day. (Kind of like 7-11 on $100,000 Pyramid).
For bonus round never replace the $100,000 replace a lower amount if million dollar prize is played for.
Vowels would increase to $750. I know that is a big jump but I always liked it when sometime they really had to work on getting enough money to purchase a vowel.
These are my suggestions. I know they will probably never happen, but one can dream can't they!
