I acknowledged the fact that Vanna does wear a mike hidden in her garment, even when it's a one-piece garment. I'm just mentioning, though, what I remembered from my experience and that we were told to wear two-piece garments with back pockets to make microphone placement easier.

Regarding the hostess being miked, Susan held a microphone for her intros from 1974-76ish before the curtain entrance debuted. I'm not sure if she ever had a clip-on mic, but her chats with Chuck/Pat didn't have volume problems. You could hear her talking on occasion during the game, but it was usually rather low -- and this was back when the studio was a mere 70 feet from the puzzle board to the Wheel, rather than the current basketball court or so. On the other hand, during a December 1979 Speed-Up round Susan turned a trilon on the top row and it squeaked really loudly, so I'm really not sure. Still, I'm no microphone expert nor do I claim to be, but I respect those who do possess that knowledge and skill to the point where they could name the make(s) and model(s) that Susan used in the '74 pilots, '75 premiere, and the GSN-aired '76 show -- and I'll gladly add that info to the timeline should I acquire it. And now back to your regularly-scheduled discussion.

If Vanna does wear a mike at all times, it's probably taped to the inside of her dress. The unit is small and compact enough to allow for easy taping. In fact, when we did a dress rehearsal, the microphones were actually taped to the podiums and clipped on to us when we stepped up to the Wheel (we rotated turns every round).

Mics are generally easier to hide when wearing a two-piece garment, not to mention, from what you posted, it doesn't look like they have a lot of time to put the mics on the contestants.
This is not a problem for Vanna, who gets tons of time in her dressing room to get the mic on.

Guint, the technicians did not have much time to mic us up. In fact, during the dress rehearsal, they were miking us up on the fly. For that reason, it is much easier and faster to mic up people when they are wearing two-piece garments. Plus, the cord needs to be as invisible as possible, which is why contestants are often encouraged to wear blazers or sweaters, as it is relatively easy to thread it under the top layer and over the body. Plus, it's not too invasive.
EDIT: I also remembered that Vanna came out on stage during a stopdown to take questions, and she had a standard, handheld cordless mic. This leads me to believe that she probably does NOT wear a microphone at all times. Plus, it would make the whole "talk into my chest" gag more plausible.
