Adam Nedeff recently made a page on his website about Fishman-Freer's unsold 1975 pilot Safecrackers, made for NBC (most likely to replace Jackpot) or syndication (to replace... The New Treasure Hunt, maybe?). It's interesting as pilots usually are, but this shot in particular caught my eye: Recognize it? How about now? ========== I don't know when in 1975 Safecrackers was taped, but this can't be coincidence...can it? Sure, Wheel's history is a lot less muddy than it was even two years ago, but I'm not aware of any circulating episodes from the first 18 months and anything that is around seems to be safely held in archives (speaking of which, I really need to save up money so I can go to Paley Center). If this had been a Merv pilot, I wouldn't be so question-marked about this. Did Wheel copy from Safecrackers, or vice versa? Hmm... [EDIT 3/23/19: Fixed links, though I had to replace the Wheel screencap (originally from June 7, 1976) due to Game Show Central having closed down in February or March 2015 (having not been updated since 10/29/09). In fairness, I think the replacement picture being from an earlier episode does illustrate my point a bit better. In the six(!) years since this post was originally made, the show's early history has become even less muddy and uncertain - two 1975 episodes offered by Archival Television Audio and the other two '76 episodes held by Paley Center have since become public, while Buzzr's Game Changers documentary showed clips of a pre-series runthrough hosted by Merv that BAV had never known about. Regarding the money graphic, as seen above the All Star Dream Machine show uses the same style of money graphic as Safecrackers, leading me to think the latter was indeed shot for NBC.]

And to this day, Jeopardy! follows in its footsteps.

Jeopardy! followed in Wheel's footsteps until the Sushi-Bar set (as the totals they used were in Helvetica).

I always thought the totals on Jeopardy! were in Korinna (same as the clue text)

I always thought the totals on Jeopardy! were in Korinna (same as the clue text) I thought so as well. That didn't happen until Season 8, and it lasted from Seasons 8-13 (the grid set). I know, as I have one episode from Season 9 and another from Season 10. On the DVD, which has the very first Trebek episode from 1984, the totals were in Helvetica (they even carried them over to the Super Jeopardy! tournament in 1990).

Well, I checked the site out, and there was another shot that seemed to have fooled me for a moment. Before it's appearance on Wheel in 1981, the puzzle board's border was used on the Safecracker's pilot. XD

Thanks for fixing that up. I don't understand what's happening with me. All the pictures I show here and even my avatar won't show up. All right, the picture had the dreaded double http, so I fixed that up in my original post. As for the avatar, the source pic's in my DeviantArt gallery. I'll see if I can fix that up. [checks the link] Yep, DA changed the URL on me. Can't blame them; it's maintenance. That's an easy fix. I think that's why a white tab with a 1 on it is point to my Profile button. Well, it wasn't why that tab appeared, but the link is fixed. Yeah, I still got a lot to learn here, but at least I'm willing to learn them, that's for sure.

I think you're saying that the Safecrackers contestant backdrop as pictures gave the WOF producers an idea for a design when planning on making the puzzle board bigger. Right?

Well, it was supposed to be just a joke, but now that you mentioned that, I have to wonder if that really was a possibility.

Oh dear, I guess someone needs to say stop stealing Wheel's on screen graphics, get your own. Next other shows do tend to take inspiration from each other but stealing their fonts is low and effortless.

Well, who could forget Blockbusters 1987, who also used Helvetica for the totals and credits (not to mention the late great Bill Rafferty's wardrobe was provided by Augustus).

About the totals and credits, you ask, I'm sure it's from the same computer system. This was even used on The All-New Let's Make a Deal (1984-86).

Certainly leads me to believe NBC had a hand in this, looks quite similar to what NBC shows of the 80s had
