Thanks to a promo that Chuck Donegan posted on YouTube today which showed that the show has been on WLS in Chicago since the beginning, I think now we know all nine of the first stations that carried the nighttime show.
-WPVI in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -WEWS in Cleveland, Ohio -WKEF in Dayton, Ohio -WDVM in Washington, D.C. (now WUSA) -KXAS in Dallas, TX -WKBW in Buffalo, New York -WDIV in Detroit, Michigan -WJRT in Flint, Michigan -WLS in Chicago, Illinois
The sad thing is, of these nine, only three still carry the show to this day (WPVI, WDIV, WLS).
I had been speculating that the show had aired on WLS since the beginning because one of my uncle who lived in Chicago at the time told me so. He said that Eyewitness News at 6 had previously been a full hour and they shortened it to thirty minutes to make room for Wheel. I wasn't sure how good his memory was so I had been waiting for hard evidence.
I think the rumor that Wheel was not in the Chi Town since the beginning was spawned from Brad Francini's old site which stated that the biggest market the show aired in at the beginning was Philly.
Hopefully this list is accurate and that's why I'm posting it here in case there needs to be any corrections.

This video (2:30) claims the syndicated version premiered in only 40% of America, which didn't include Chicago (or NY or LA)

Hmmm. Who knows? There's lots of different stories about the number of stations. The most common one I've heard is that there were only nine.

I want to see the source of that clip at 2:46 -- come on, Pat kicking a freaking car offstage?! Anyway, regarding nighttime Wheel's early days, the story which is currently on the History Wiki is from the 1987 Sams/Shook Wheel of Fortune book: The Broadcasting ad, noting that Wheel was "the only new access strip with a performance record" and "no network daytime hit has ever failed as a first-run access show", was one of several that King World made. Another, placed into Variety, went something like this: Per a contract with NBC, King World was "pretty much restricted" to only going for prime-access slots ( Variety, 3/16/83) and offering the show for cash only with "no barter time taken out" by the syndicator ( Variety, 3/23/83). On April 13, King World announced a "go" for nighttime Wheel, with WPVI signing on for a 7:30 PM slot around August 17 (and subsequently regained their lead in that slot in October, the first time they did so since November 1980; Variety, 11/30/83). Around September 7, WKBW moved Wheel into the 7:00 PM slot. KRON in San Francisco (thanks, William ) joined on October 31, airing the show at 7:00 PM. Wheel was a major hit in its four early-metered markets (KXAS, WDIV, WPVI, and WDVM; an ad in Broadcasting and Variety crowed about this) and had solid ratings in all of its markets by about mid-November 1983. ...or at least, that's the story as I know it.

When did the Maine markets get it? I recall as a kid watching it on WLBZ (the NBC station from Bangor), and then at some point in the late 90s moving to WVII (the ABC affiliate of Bangor) where Jeopardy! had already been.

All I remember is WABC-TV New York picking up the show in 1990. I'm almost certain that WCBS-TV aired it from 1983-1990. (I don't recall WNBC-TV airing it).
As for D/FW--yes, KXAS aired it from 1983-1987, WFAA from 1987-2005, and KTVT from 2005-present.
(And speaking of WJRT, it and WTVG-TV in Toledo, OH were ABC O&O's for a short period of time)

Wheel did indeed air on WCBS until 1990.

I think KCBS-TV Los Angeles is one of the original stations as well. TexasTV on YouTube has promos for Wheel and Jeopardy! (Former at 7PM, latter at 7:30PM), which means KABC-TV picked them up starting in Season 8, like WABC-TV New York.

Both shows had been at those respective timeslots on KCOP before 1989. They were on channel 2 from 1989-1992, after which they moved to channel 7.
I think I've also heard before that Jeopardy! was on KCBS at 4:30pm during its first season, but I'm not sure if that's true.

Bumping to update for other stations, with airtimes as known. Note that almost all of these stations was known to be airing wheel by October 3.
KDKA (Pittsburgh, PA, 5:30 PM) WDHO (Toledo, OH, 6:00 PM) KTSP (Phoenix, AZ, 6:30 PM) WMAR (Baltimore, MD, 7:00 PM) KXTV (Sacramento, CA, 7:00 PM) WTSP (Tampa, FL, 7:00 PM) WNYT (Albany, NY, 7:30 PM) WOOD (Grand Rapids, MI, 7:30 PM) WCPO (Cincinnati, OH, 7:30 PM) WXII (Greensboro, NC, 7:30 PM) WJAC (Johnstown, PA, 7:30 PM) WLKY (Louisville, KY, 7:30 PM) WVIT (New Britain, CT 7:30 PM) WPRI (Providence, RI, 7:30 PM)
As you can see, King World's foray into mid-sized markets focusing on the primetime access slot really worked, and it soon allowed for the major markets to sign on.

Despite Roger King's insistence of the show airing only in the prime access hour, it looks like he was more lenient on it back then with a few 5 and 6 PM hour slots. For the markets posted above, here is where Wheel airs now. The only one that's still the same is WTSP, but WFTS carried it for a time until Season 30. Was WBNS in Columbus not a Wheel station originally? I know they aired the Ohio State Fair specials that August.

KSDK in St. Louis has had the Wheel at 6:30 since 12/12/83. Does that count for original?
