So, I was doing some thinking and wondered what everyone else's thoughts are.
What if Vanna's photo never came across Merv's desk? What if she never tried out, never became hostess? Of the two remaining try outs, Vicki McCarty and Summer Bartholomew, I would have to say Summer would have been chosen due to the fact that she already had previous experience with Wheel, though that's all I have to go on since I've never seen either of their audition tapes.
And...
What if Pat never had a talk show and decided to stay with Daytime Wheel? Would the show have lasted longer? Personally, I think by the late 80s, the daytime version was on the way out. By '89, it had been on for 14 years, and that was exceptional for a game show back then. I think it may have lasted into 1992 if Pat had stayed, but no longer than that, simply because daytime game shows were close to all but done for save for TPiR. But, who know, it could've been big hit when it moved to CBS if Pat were at the helm...

If Pat had stayed, it may never have went to CBS in the first place, I think

^It Still would have gone to CBS, however I think the shopping would have been axed (or should have been axed as prizes were lack luster) a month before the move to CBS to give time to adjust to that format. If No Vanna, Summer would be there, previous experience as a substitute would have made her a shoe-in. If Pat had stayed I think it would have lasted maybe until 1998 if they did a few format changes aside from axing the shopping such as instead of daily daytime moving to Saturdays and having kid contestants and prizes (Kids' gameshows were huge then)

Yeah, the contract with NBC was up and NBC wasn't going to renew. I think that the show lasting until 1998 is a bit of stretch. Again, I say 1992 maybe even 1993 at the latest. The prizes at CBS were nothing short of awful and cheap. I mean, at least they did look a bit better when they went back to NBC. The cheapness at CBS coupled with the swapping back to NBC really hurt the show and just went to prove that it was on its last leg. Pat would've helped it some simply because he was a familiar face.

If Merv had never seen Vanna's photo, I think Vicki McCarty would've gotten the job. Pat seemed to be pushing pretty hard for her. If Pat hadn't left daytime, and assuming the subsequent events progressed as they did here ( Price builds its lead, NBC and Merv can't come to a license fee agreement, NBC kicks Wheel out of Burbank despite the studio contract not expiring until 1990, show moves to CBS)...I think it might have been the same until the 1991 end, actually. The only difference is that Pat would've snarked at the cheapness every chance he got. * "You know, the Wheel felt a lot lighter when I spun it just then. Probably because there's not as much money on it." -July 17 * "We've put a special prize on the Wheel, and if what I've seen so far is any indication it's probably worth about 30 bucks. Charlie?"* (while talking about the changes, after Vanna mentions the redone Free Spins) "We got these at an Army surplus store, they were using them for target practice before we got them. CBS gave us 99 cents; these cost us $3.95. Worth every penny."* "We're playing for cash, and you may have noticed something new on some of our wedges - diamonds. ...Boy, we're just rolling in dough, aren't we?" -July 18 ...and so on.
