[Edited 12/30/17: Removed YouTube link, as the channel which originally uploaded the source footage for this recap - "Dozier191" - no longer exists.]
Before the show begins, there's a WNBC promo for NewsCenter4 at 5:00 PM. Since a good amount of the circulating 1979-81 footage was taped from WNBC, this isn't much of a surprise.

Look at these luxurious prizes! A diamond bracelet, twin brass beds, and an organ are just three (four?) examples of the over $38,000 in fabulous merchandise just waiting to be won today on the Star Bonus-less Wheel of Fortune!
Let's meet the nice folks who want to play our game today, including a returning champ (last names are approximate):
Angela Mills, going for her second win with $4,550 in prizes thus far.
Leo Knox, a security officer and father of two who's interested in old movies (his favorite is Gone with the Wind).
Juanita Brownwell, a married mother of three (including twins) who is currently going to court-reporting school.
ROUND 1:
Top value is $500, but our players should avoid theflat-bottomed 7's black space called Bankrupt because it'll take away all their cash but not their merchandise because once someone buys a prize, it's theirs to keep. Also, when solving a puzzle they have to say it exactly as it's written on the puzzle board, since that's kinda important now.

Angela drew the number "1" to get to the red arrow, so she'll spin first...and it's a good thing, too, since she picks up two T's on $350. She opts to spin again, and it pays off to the tune of a $500 S. She buys a single A, then lands on $500 again...but can't cash in with an L.
It's now Leo's turn, getting an N on $300 but dudding out with W on $350. Juanita hits Bankrupt immediately, Angela duds out with an M on $250, and Leo duds out with an R on the same wedge. Juanita lands on the same $250, finally getting into the game with V...only to call a D that isn't there while on $400. Neither is the O that Angela buys.
Leo lands on $150 but repeats the M, which gives Juanita a break that she can't take advantage of with a P on $400. (Chuck: "I can't believe this is taking so long!") Angela breaks the dud streak by buying the E's, but admits she's lost even after three of them are put on the board. A guess of H gives her $275 more, followed by another $200 with a C. With only a single vowel remaining...

...she manages to name STEVE CAUTHEN for $925! (The puzzle board's chase lights go counterclockwise rather than the normal clockwise.)
Angela goes shopping in the Family Room, buying a $595 Golden West Billiards bumper pool table, a $220 Yahama folk guitar, and a set of $60 ceramic ducks (Angela: "Better than the dictionary.") with the last $50 on a Giorgio gift certificate.
Duds: L (Angela), W (Leo), M (Angela), R (Leo), D (Juanita), O (Angela), P (Juanita)
DQ: Leo's repeated M
Bankrupts: Juanita (loss of turn)
Angela: $975
Leo: nothing, but starts the next round
Juanita: nothing either
====
The commercials in this first break are for Feen-A-Mint laxatives (available in both gum and dual-formula pills) and E.P.T. in-home early-pregnancy tests (used by women since 1976). I love having commercials in my classic game shows, but sometimes they're a weird combo.

ROUND 2:
$1,000 is the Big Freaking Deal for this round, plus there's a second Bankrupt to make things more interesting.

PHRASE
Leo tries to redeem himself after that repeat M in Round 1...but just hits Bankrupt. Juanita avoids the same fate, but can't get $400 with a T. Angela grabs $1,300 from two R's (according to Chuck, $650 is "Angela's favorite number."), but after buying an E hits Bankrupt to take away her turn and that money. Leo gets $800 from two S's, only to lose his turn again with an N on $200. Juanita's choice of P can't get any money from the same $200, but we'll have to hold off on any more Wheel spinning for a little bit.
As the players turn their backs, let's take a look at the board as we go to commercial...

PHRASE
Duds (pre-break): T (Juanita), N (Leo), P (Juanita)
Bankrupts (pre-break): Leo (loss of turn), Angela ($1,050)

Our second commercial break for the day contains plugs for Oxipor (for Psoriasis) and Depend-O automatic toilet-bowl cleaner.
====
Unfortunately, these first 12 minutes are all that's available - the original source tape evidently ran out right after the Depend-O commercial, as the video goes to static. As such, I don't know how the rest of this game went, and chances are good that it's been lost to time.
The Round 2 puzzle was most likely this:
H O L D / Y O U R
H O R S E S
PHRASE
So there we have it - my first-ever Wheel recap. Granted, it's not a full episode, but I wanted to see if I could pull off doing these so I figured I'd start with this since it isn't a montage of some kind. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
