I have had this conversation with a few people I know who are into game shows ever since my audition so I was wondering what other people's thoughts were on here. Does anyone see the Wheelmobile method of recruiting contestants being reduced or even eliminated sometime down the road with the now complete roll out of the Face of the Fan search? I have weighed the pros and cons of each. The general opinion seems to be that the Wheelmobile will not be as frequently used, but will not go away completely. Here are the pros and cons for each that seems to be agreed on.
Pros (Wheelmobile):
-Great promotional tool for local affiliates.
-Good way to find people who aren't technologically savvy to make a video, but would still make good contestants.
-Can connect with people directly.
-Gives Marty a job
Cons (Wheelmobile)
-Expensive- Between maintaining the Wheelmobile itself and organizing each event and buying prizes and travel costs, I'm sure it's expensive to run one compared to FOTF.
-Lower Sample (and quality?)- You can only go through so many people per day and with the decision of deciding who to interview being completely random, you could theoretically get very few people who would potentially make good contestants (whether they're shy, quiet, or not good game players).
-"Inefficient"- Going along with the 2nd point, you could be putting up a lot of money to hold these events and theoretically get a very low return on your investment which might make it more appealing to go with something less expensive.
Pros (FOTF)
-Inexpensive- There's no travel costs except for holding final auditions. All of the preliminary stuff is done from the comfort of a desk on a computer in LA. No need to pay to maintain a Winnebago or hire Marty, a traveling Vanna, or staff to run the events around the country.
-Higher Sample- Rather than "interviewing" only 100 or so people per day on the road, you can "interview" hundreds or even thousands of people at your leisure. You can see from the video how well they will appear on camera and quickly dismiss those that wouldn't appear to do well on TV (Quiet, mumblers, etc).
Cons (FOTF)
-Impersonal- If you're trying to reach out for PR, just posting a website to submit a video might not be the best way to promote for a local affiliate or directly connect to viewers if that's the goal.
-Alienating potential good contestants- Let's face it, not everyone is good with computers or know how to upload a video on the computer. However, that does not mean they would not make great contestants which could keep out some people from being picked where they could by attending a Wheelmobile audition (even though the odds there are low with the random draw).
