This just hit me for some reason last night when I was watching. Wheel has been on TV for 40 years and has given away hundreds of millions of dollars in cash & prizes. My question is...where does it all come from? Especially the cash. I can see if the prizes are provided by the travel agency or whomever they work with, but does the cash come from advertisers alone? It just has me curious.

Sony is in the electronics business; it's conceivable that at least some of the cash is coming from sales money. Don't quote me on that, though.

Some of the money comes from the licensing fees paid by the stations that broadcast Wheel.

I'm sure advertising revenue and syndication fees also come into play.

This week, in particular, also got me thinking...
Think about the various sponsors you see on the show (kinda hard to avoid them all, really)--V8's sponsoring the Bonus Round. For a while, it was Maxwell House. The Jackpot Round was sponsored when it was still part of the show ("Tonight's Jackpot Round is brought to you by...Egglands' Best!"). The gift tag is almost always sponsored. The wheel prize is sometimes sponsored. You'll hear Vanna say in and out of breaks, "Closed captioning paid for in part by the following..." And not to mention Charlie's/Jim's line at the end of the show, "Promotional consideration provided by..."
These are all companies that have paid a certain amount of money to be featured for a small part of the show. If we take the former Jackpot plug at face value, literally, Egglands' Best gave us the money to pay for anything we need to produce this part of the show--including prize money.
On Jeopardy! these days, it's even more explicit--Johnny flat-out says at the end, "Prizes for our 2nd- and 3rd-place contestants provided by Aleve."
For what it's worth, I remember from a time I was in the audience, Jim said that "Wheel" makes $90 million a year. So they're obviously not hurting for cash anytime soon. If you think about how much they give away in a typical season, the actual amount Wheel pays out of pocket is probably significantly less than your typical season's take because of all these sponsorship deals.

The "Slogan" category probably helped with the prize budget in past seasons. Sometimes the wheel prize, I believe unless I am mistaken is DOUBLE sponsored. The trip is sponsored by the resort in question where the contestant will be staying (or the Travel agency), and also sponsored by a site like Hotwire.com. Pat reminds us of the model of the 1/2 cars every time a contestant picks it up which I assume is also a sponsorship. One week, the 1/2 cars were more explicitly sponsored by Mazda, as Mazda was actually displayed on the 1/2 car licence plates. And the road show in Vegas at the beginning of this season had AutoNation sponsor the Cars offered in the BR.

...I'm almost positive that's not the case at all. That'd be like saying Nike paid us just so I could type "Just Do It" in this post. (Which--full disclosure--they have not.)

BAV isn't nationally televised. WOF is. I see both of your arguments and they are both valid. I have also wondered whether Slogan had some tie-ins with sponsors.

^ I figure at least some companies must've paid for slogan rights. Why else would they use such a short puzzle as EAT FRESH in an era when puzzles that short were unheard of?

^ Because they felt like it. There are better ways to sponsor something on the show, as previously mentioned. That'd be like saying Nike paid us just so I could type "Just Do It" in this post. (Which--full disclosure--they have not.) I got my check!

(Which--full disclosure--they have not.) I got my check! Really? I honestly can't think of a better way to promote a product on Wheel than having it be a puzzle, because it's not like a sponsorship before the Featured Prize or the Mystery Round where people who have DVR's are going to skip, and the rest of the people will only be half paying attention to it, it's part of the game itself. I don't really understand why some of you think that Slogan having tie-ins with the sponsors is such an insane idea. It seems pretty reasonable and logical to me.
