My name is Doug – and I'm a game-show-a-holic
No – really. While “normal” kids learned their ABCs and 123s from “Sesame Street”, I learned my ABCs from “Wheel of Fortune” and 123s from some game show involving bidding on items and fabulous showcases. It's – uh – the title escapes me.
In any event, my earliest WoF memories go back to the Chuck and Susan days. Part of those days were spent growing up in San Antonio, Texas. Ironically, while visiting relatives in Alabama, I was watching “San Antonio Week” on WoF.
Fast forward to recent years. In 2005, my wife and I sent for tickets when WoF brought their show to New Orleans, Louisiana – roughly two hours from where I currently live in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
We got to see a couple of shows – including a $100,000 win in the bonus round (the second such win on the road). They taped three more shows – but Cindy and I mutually agreed to leave. Hurricane Katrina, you see, had her eyes on our part of the world. There plans to tape three weeks' worth of shows, not surprisingly, were cut to two.
Cindy is no longer with us – passing away unexpectedly in 2007. But seeing “Wheel” and New Orleans were definitely among the highlights of our marriage.
As for me, I work as a newscast producer at WDAM television, longtime home to “Wheel” on the network and later syndicated levels (save, of course, for that brief period of time on CBS). The station also airs “Jeopardy!” and “Millionaire” in off-network hours – making little ol' me ineligible to apply as a contestant on the aforementioned.
