The idea for this thread came from a post in another, and I thought it more appropriate to start a new thread than to derail the other. Here's the relevant part of the post in the other thread: I remember that throughout Season 23, they checked out international versions, even when it wasn't "Wheel Around the World" week, probably because it was the first week of that season. That season, along with YouTube's debut on the Net provoked my interest in checking out international versions. Recent "Wheel Around the World" weeks, however, have become more monotonus, especially since the number of foreign versions is very small, and they keep showing the same versions season after season. This post got me thinking: What time period had the most known countries airing their own versions of Wheel of Fortune? I want to say it's sometime in the late 1980s and/or early 1990s, but more precise information would be nice.

I would say sometime during the 1990s. When Italy's and France's versions started in 1987 (not including Pentatlon and Pentathlon respectively), a lot of other European countries began following suit in the late 80s and early 90s. As some of the versions that were on in the 1990s ended rather quickly, such as Norway and Sweden's versions, others lasted longer such as Germany's and Spain's. Those that didn't last long were replaced by other countries such as Romania, although Romania's didn't last too long either.
